I've dyed several things and they've turned out pretty well. The big thing is make sure you follow the instructions, especially adding either salt or vinegar. What kind of fabric is the top? It's very hard to dye synthetic fabrics. And if the thread is made of a different material, it will take up color differently than the rest of the top.
Try bleaching it first. Just make sure the fabric can handle bleach and which one it can handle.

Have you thought about a gentle bleach bath for the entire item first? I've done that.

I just dyed a shirt that was sun faded. It was a magenta color that I didn't think I could match, so I chose to dye it black. It took very well, so I was pleased, but it was a time-consuming process. (I didn't want to risk my new washing machine, so I dyed in a stock pot on the stove.) All in all, success!

I have dyed a few things - mostly cotton jackets and shorts. Varying results. I did dye one jacket without washing it first, and the armpits took the color differently. All dye jobs have been on items I'm ready to let go if it goes bad. Usually the result is a lighter color than I'd imagined. So be prepared for that.

One of my white dress shirts has suffered a laundry mishap that's resulted in a small pale pink water colour-like stain in the bust area. I've thought about trying to bleach it out, but if that doesn't work do you think dying the whole shirt a pale pink colour might hide the stain? Or would it highlight the blotch?
