I occasionally have to trim 1/4 " or so from bangs when things are so busy at work I can't get to my hair guy. It's not ideal for me, scissors get dull, & I'm not very adept at how much to trim off. But it helps me survive another week or so.

Yup. Been there, done that. The way I cut it is just plain simple, no fancy styling and I do it when there is enough length that getting it a bit shorter than expected will not be a big deal. My hair curls when you cut it so it ends up being shorter than what was intended.

I have trimmed it, using the pigtails method posted earlier, on several occasions. But I had long, wavy/curly hair which hides any mistakes, so I wasn't too worried about it.

I trim my own bangs all the time, and using cheap scissors, too! I think the trick here is to only nip off tiny bits at a time. Having wavy hair and a messy/natural style helps here, too, because I like them side swept and a bit wispy. I don't think it would work as well if I had straight bangs.

I really cannot imagine even attempting to cut my own hair. How do you cut the back???? How do you add texture or layers??????

Cut no, coloured yes!!

I think mine would be fine to cut into some styles as it is wavy and messy.

I would colour again if I was going for a uniform colour, but with having highlights I leave this in the hands of a stylist. I was pretty good at doing platinum blonde. I have had some weird locations for haircuts - in a shower once (not going, on a stool) and in the backyard of the Moshav I worked on in Israel. My friend cut my hair from very long to a pixie and bleached it white blonde. I loved it!

I have thick wavy dark auburn hair that hides imperfect cuts pretty well, so I occasionally trim the overlong bangs or side layers a bit, if the mood strikes me. However, I'd never attempt a whole-head trim as I have bad peripheral vision and would certainly screw it up. Coloring is not as bad---I colored my hair for years when I just need some minor grey coverage---but real cutting (i.e all over my head) to me is fraught with perils. I wear my hair in long layers that can go 4 months or so without a trim, and have cultivated a longtime stylist at a local, inexpensive "quick cuts" type salon. I found her through sheer luck--walked in one day for a bang trim and because she had the same hair as me (and hers looked fabulous) I let her give me long layers. She does just what I want (quick trim of bangs and layers) and charges $25 plus a tip. I'm S.O.L. when she decides to retire....she's down to just 3 days a week and I keep begging her not to go!

For color, I've done it all different ways but have finally settled on a way that works. I used to do my roots myself with a box color (messy and not always the best coverage but it worked in my 20s and 30s to hide the occasional grey hairs,) When I was just covering a little bit of grey, I could get by with doing myself every 3 months or so. Once in a while I would screw up and go too light or too dark and had to have a professional fix it but that only happened maybe twice in 20 years of box color. However, when I hit 42 or 43 (can't recall exactly...) I faced the fact that I had gone past covering a few greys. I was about 50% grey and had obvious roots that NEEDED covering every 4 weeks. I bounced around from salon to salon for a few years but hated paying the high prices for a retouch.

When I got married at 45, I decided to make a big change for my big day. I went slightly crazy (for me--I am frugal) and had a makeover at an upscale salon, including great cut, a whole head highlight and new color. I was a strawberry blonde with highlights for my wedding and loved it. However after the wedding hoopla. that look was just too high maintenance and I decided to go back to brunette with monthly retouches for the grey. This time I went to my local cosmetology school and asked the head instructor to take me back to a natural auburn brown. I was worried about having a student work on me but for that first time, they actually used me up on the school teaching podium for a class in 'going back to natural color' and the head teacher did the color formula and application and it turned out great. The students have been doing my retouches ever since (3 years). No problems as long as they follow the teacher's formula and she checks their work before I go and doesn't let me leave until it's perfect. For $25 and tip this is a bargain and I feel pampered because the students are always happy to see me and take their time.

My solutions might not work for people with more fussy hair but these methods have worked better for me than trying to learn new skills (cutting and color) myself.

I have cut my own bangs and currently cut hubby's hair. I used to do the kids when they were little as well.

I just found out from my hairdresser that they trim bangs for free!!

I got my first haircut for my wavy curly locks the other day. This means the hair was cut dry.

I was pleased she did not want to cut all the length off as she said the style was good for me..

Nope except the bangs. I have very, very thick coarse hair with layers. I wish I could just to save money but I like a good cut.

When I was a kid, my dad used to stand me on the kitchen table and square off the back, I had no bangs.

I have started cutting my own hair. About 4 years ago we moved 3 hours away from my hairstylist of 30 years. I tried a few stylist in the area but my hair looked awful. I go back to my regular stylist a few times a year and in between trim my own hair. I know exactly what I want and I found that the new stylists all had their own ideas. I watched Youtube videos on how to cut hair and figured it out.
When I was in high school I had hair to my waist. My sister would trim the ends for me. I would trim her hair for her. Looked pretty good.

I have a hard enough time getting my hair to do what I want that I would not also subject it to a self-trim. So no, I don't do anything to my hair. Since my stylist will correct things for free within a week (like a layer that's not lying down well), I figure I might as well have her do it than risk ruining it myself.

I once cut my hair when I was in college. It was only about a month before the summer break, and haircuts at school were extremely expensive, about three times as much as I would pay back home. I just needed a trim to get through the last month. I cut most of it myself but asked a friend to trim the back. Boy, was she nervous! Ha ha. I didn't take a lot off--maybe an inch--but when I saw a friend the next day, he said, "Something's different." When I said it was my hair, he said, "Oh yes," but didn't say that it looked good. I took the hint.

No way! But I have recently taken eye brow shaping into my own hands. I used to think that was best left to the professionals as well, but in the year that we've lived in this new town I've yet to find someone who doesn't overdo it. I know it's not really the same thing, but a brow shape and haircut can both pretty dramatically change ones appearance!

After watching a Youtube video by a stylist I now know how to properly trim my side swept fringe. I do it occasionally if it starts to bug me between cuts. I wouldn't attempt the rest of my hair though.

I do my son's hair with a Wahl trimmer. He said he was tired of paying a stylist to just run a #4 over his head. So, he bought the trimmer and I do it for him. I must say that thing has paid for itself.

Never ever! I am still getting over the trauma of my mother cutting my hair when I was small (crooked short bangs - yuck!) and that was over 50 years ago.

I've cut my own hair for decades, everything from pixie to bob. To be honest, at the moment it's a question of buying new clothes or going for a professional cut, and I prefer to be clothed!
The secret is to have a multi-angle mirror, professional scissors and a clear idea of what you want to achieve - oh, yes, and plenty of time.
Anyone with really fine, silky straight hair would probably be best going to a salon - the smallest mistake will show up like a beacon on that kind of hair.

When I had long hair I regularly cut it using this method:
http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com
But this is basically just a standard trimming of long hair without any variations. I have never cut my own hair when it was shorter.

I try to buzz the side of my head myself, but it's nerve-wracking and I always need my boyfriend's help. My vision is awful so I need my glasses on, but then they get in the way of cutting.

I was talking to a friend with curly hair in an angled bob (and an undercut like mine). She does it herself (no money for a salon) and it looks great. We agreed that curls are pretty forgiving - there's the risk that you'll cut something too short and it'll stick out to the side, but otherwise everything seems to blend together.

I cut my own hair. I stopped going to salons about a decade ago, because every time I went I came home and found myself still fiddling with the cut. I never found a stylist who could really nail what I wanted, so I figured out how to do it myself.

I'm still not the most efficient hairdresser in the world, but I have my go-to styles down pretty well (a choppy pixie and a somewhat Sassoon-ish bob). Short hair requires a fair amount of maintenance, so I trim the bangs and the back every 4 - 6 weeks. After DIY'ing for so long, I can't imagine getting maintenance like that done professionally, for both time and money reasons. If I got it into my head that I wanted something really challenging and experimental, then I would go find a stylist to do it for me, but for the most part I just like my hair to stay out of my way. :)

The key to success is having a good double mirror set-up so you can see the back and sides easily. And going very slowly at first. You can make it shorter, but you can't make it longer! If I get a chance, I'll post some photos tomorrow.

No. I am not that brave and the salon is some of my only me time so I'm not about to give that up.

My experiences have been very much like Karie's, although my troubles were with colour. My Mum once streaked my hair and basically pulled all of the hair through the streaking cap. Worried that I would be in trouble at school for having platinum blonde hair, I bought a toner to make it less white. My hair turned pink (at least the local Emo kids thought it was cool). I had to front up at school with pink hair and hope I didn't get expelled from my strict girl's school. Luckily the Principal saw how mortified I was with the state of my hair, it was considered punishment enough. I have never done a home job on my hair since then.
