My work (over the years) has often required me to be the public face of our projects so I have done a bit of tv. Also been interviewed on talk show (small cable type show) and appeared in an advertisement that ran at our local cinema. Laura's advice was exactly what I was told. I found it nerve racking tho. As far as clothing goes, the advert is the one I'm most happy with. I had been participating here for some time and was much more confident in my outfit choice. I wore a skinny black pant and draped cobalt collarless shirt. I can watch it now without cringing lol

I was on Captain Delta, a kids program, in the early 1960's. I do not remember what I wore and it probably did not matter because, tv was still black and white. The producers found out my brother, who was on with me, was born on leap year and he got to go on again on his birthday. I was so jealous, lol.

What great advice! I actually might be on TV next week - I'm going to be part of a sewing class that's being filmed for a spot on the local news. I'll have to remember to wear solid colors!

I wish I had known all of you before my tv appearance! No comment about what I wore because I don't remember but I'm certain it was awful. I try to forget it ever happened.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! Hopefully I never again get ambushed with a camera in the middle of summer and have a chance to plan what to wear.

At the first sight of a TV camera, I'd take cover under a large blanket, or, better still, dive under the seat! Seriously, I'd do anything to avoid it.

I'm still relatively new to the forum, but I wanted to help with this one. I'm a former small market TV reporter. I'll build on Laura's advice as a TV producer:
-YES to solid colors. Take your cue from female network TV anchors and talk show hosts. They are often in a solid color sheath.
-YES to saturated colors, although I would amplify the advice to only choose those that flatter you. You look more warm than cool to me (I'm warm), so tangerines and oranges might look great rather than emerald or royal blue. Michelle Obama's recent NR dress in marigold at State of the Union address is a great example. Neutrals are also great. Perhaps shades of bone, cream, tan, camel, olive, evergreen, etc. are best for you.
-NO to shiny or reflective fabrics of any kind. Make sure they are flat or matt. Same with makeup; stay skin-tone neutral (but enhanced).
-YES to small bling around the face to draw attention there: earrings, 16" necklaces or chokers.
-YES to a professional blow out before you go on-air, if you can swing it. The camera picks up broken ends, which is why your (lovely) hair looks windblown compared with the interviewer's in your clip.
PS- You should camera test yourself with whatever home device you have, includiing your cell phone, to see if you catch anything else. Lighting will matter significantly, which is why Laura's "bring a few options" advice is great!
Good luck!

Ok. I have now watched your video several times, lol. I get like this. My brother works in Hollywood, a camera man. I sometimes review. I think they chose you because you were camera ready, never no mind how you felt. I rather doubt if you'd been wearing blue like the interviewer or a bright raspberry, they'd have gone for you. Esp. considering the backdrop and context.

Former TV producer here! Some guidelines:

• Wear a solid color, something you feel good in.

• Jewel tones are best (think teal, emerald, ruby, sapphire, coral . . .) Whatever color flatters you.

• Avoid solid white and black. They mess with exposure.

• Red is a tossup depending on the hue (burgundy usually OK, hotter reds can vibrate).

• Avoid small patterns: narrow stripes, herringbone, houndstooth, etc. They produce a dizzying, moire effect on screen.

• A twinset often comes off authoritative and pretty and makes a great jacket alternative if you're going for a professional look.

• Bring two or three options.

• Fresh haircut, manicure, etc.

• When in doubt, ask your producer!

I was an extra (with closeup scenes) in a tv movie. We brought 3 outfits on spec and I found out that our director loathed white clothing on camera. He yelled at another poor extra 'Get that white dress out of the scene' like it was alive and attacking! I ended up wearing a blue cocktail dress but couldn't carry my blingy handbag. Wardrobe handed me a plain black clutch instead If you're going to be on high-def tv, amplify your makeup a little bit and powder your face lightly. Wear something simple in cut, fits well, not neon bright in color.

I was in a tv documentary a zillion years ago. Like in the days of tube tvs. Orange and blues were used a lot then. I wore a pale tan and white, wide striped shirt and blue jeans.

In general now, it's as Peri says. I wouldn't do a bright colour because your face has to compete with that. That takes news anchor heavy makeup.

I've been interviewed for a TV segment and I was told to wear a solid color, not a print. Other than that I think the main thing would be to wear your most flattering color and go a bit stronger with your makeup...especially eyes, not so much lips.

And if so, what did you wear? If you had the luxury of picking out your outfit, that is...Or if you were going to be on TV (you can pick the occasion), what would you wear?

I'll start: I've been on TV three times, once in middle school, once in my senior year of high school, and once two and a half years ago when I was interviewed for an English language educational program while in Korea. That was a surprise and happened to be on a very hot, humid day--I ended up having to wipe myself down from the sweat. I was wearing a thin cotton-silk shirt and skirt combo. Later that day, I was horrified to find that I had ripped a huge hole in the underarm of that shirt--not what you want to be wearing to be on Korean national TV! Fortunately I saw the video later and it didn't show.

I wish I had gone for a brighter color for my high school TV appearance, I think the beige-y color I chose (partially chosen by my parents) washed me out.

ETA: here's the video of the Korean TV interview, my part is at 4:25. I had been walking around all day in the hot weather and apologize for my hair being all over the place! I felt very undercoiffed and make-uped compared to the reporter interviewing me.
