The fabric store sounds like it would be a good stop. I find when going there not to get too particular about the pattern but mainly concentrate on the colours you want and then browse and see what they have. Somehow if I concentrate on colour it seems less intimidating to me.

Hi Gigi, the hat might be too big for you. My head measures 22 inches and it fits well. I think an inch out might drive you crazy - slipping and sliding. Looking in the kids department, Joy, is a great idea!

If you need smaller hats to fit your head, try the girls' department. I have the best luck there and they cost much less than the women's sizes. Last year Nordstroms had some styles that looked appropriate for adults.

Hi, Kerry! I hadn't thought of looking at J. Crew for hats...nor had I thought of e-mailing a place for inner circumference. That's a great idea!

I just measured my head, and my head is 21 inches. So I wonder if this hat will be too big. What does your head measure, if I may ask? I don't know how much of a difference you can have between head and hat circumference before the hat starts feeling really big...I know very little about hats.

I just bought a fabulous slightly floppy straw hat from J Crew. It was reasonable priced, I think - about $40. I emailed to find the inner circumference first and it's 22.25 inches. Fits me great! Might work for you?

Keep in mind that slippy fabric like most silk, polyester, and acetate don't have much friction to grab your hair. Chiffon is better, and cotton and linen is even more so. Really, really old scarves tend to be much smaller than those from the last decade or two, so you might find right sized ones at thift/charity shops and estate sales.

I'm actually in the midst of sewing two silk scarf squares for myself, because I found this designer silk with patterns I loved at a fabric store, and could afford a little bit of it. I have to say, it's not as easy to hand roll and stitch an edge of a silk scarf as it looks on the youtube videos

E, thanks for the thrifting offer! However, I am so picky about anything I buy that I know it would end up being a headache. Thank you so much, though! :^)

Rabbit, there is a TJ Maxx not too far from me, and there might be a Marshall's at the mall now. Alas, no Ross! The last time I was in TJ Maxx, they were trying to unload their winter scarves yet, so I left empty-handed. I'll bet they've got more stock by now.

L'Abeille, thank you for your detailed post! I was wondering about the ear warmth factor with the sun hats...I'll have to make sure I look for one with a fabric tie at the bottom.

As for the impossibility of finding square silk scarves at the usual places...I was in Nordie's today and asked the SA in hats and scarves about it. She said, "You won't believe this, but..." and I interrupted, "I'm probably the tenth person to ask you that today!" She said, "No, you're about the fifteenth to ask me that this week." She said that Nordie's doesn't have any and that she doesn't even know where to tell me to find them. She said that the trend for so long has been toward the rectangular scarves, because they're so versatile, that the square ones have practically gone out of existence. So at least I know I wasn't imagining having a hard time finding these!

I only get the earaches in winter, but my hats or scarves have to cover the very front part of my ear--where the wind gets in--for it to work. Is that what you do as well?

Here are some things that have worked for me:
A beret--a big, slouchy one, pulled down, with most of my hair tucked in, so my ears are covered.
A knitted or fleece headband, worn fairly forward to cover the ears (what I usually use for skiing.) As a variation on this for summer--I have seen a Pinterest pin somewhere that was a summery looking headband, made by braiding together pieces of a cut-up T-shirt into something resembling nautical knots.
A large square scarf, tied under the chin Babuschka style (like the mod girls did in the early 60s movies to keep their hair tidy in convertibles).
A really large square scarf, tied like a turban African style.
A rectangular scarf, much smaller and narrower than a pashmina, tied like a 60's style headband at the hairline, with the long ends trailing back at the nape of the neck.
I love wide-brimmed hats in summer--or any time really--but they don't cover the ears, or stay on in the wind. Well, except for the style that has a wide ribbon or scarf tied around the front of the brim and then passing down through it to tie under the chin--that would work too.

Other ways are possible but don't suit me: tiny bandanna scarves tied to knot at the nape of the neck make me look like Dopey the dwarf. And ear-warming woolly hats--the helmet and ear-flap and Peruvian dangly-braided-bits-by-the-ear styles that were "in" before the recent spate of tuques and "beanies".

As for being unable to find any square scarves: if you really can't, then cut up a pashmina into squares.

There's a blog called MaiTai's Picture Book, that is entirely dedicated to new ways to wear square silk scarves. She may have some for you as well.

Ross is US based (an offprice retailer like TJ Maxx and Marshalls, but a little more inexpensive). Actually all of these places have nice scarfs. Ross's long cotton, wool or rayon scarfs aren't as high quality as Marshall's/TJ Maxx for example but they do have silk squares and small rectangles in attractive and contemporary colors and patterns (I was eyeing a few yesterday) and they are very inexpensive - not thrift store prices, but under 10$.

Joy's links are what I was thinking of in terms of the premade headbands/head wraps I've seen around.

Too bad Gigi re: the thrift stores. Have you tried a gauzy/lightweight rectangle? I remember Target used to have them, but maybe they're out of style/season.

If you'd like to look out for scarves when I go thrifting, I'll do so happily! I have an iphone so I could take photos to see if any catch your eye (let me know your preferred colours/shapes/patterns/etc.) & then you can just paypal the cost; I can't imagine shipping would be much and as I said they're $1.99/$2.15 after sales tax. No hurt feelings if you don't want me to do that though, just thought I'd offer. :) And I'll check through my 'purgatory' bags and see if there are any scarves there that might work.

E, you are so right...the pashmina is just too much material. The steps in the Pinterest link could be done by a rectangle, but it seems like rectangular scarves come only in large sizes...at least only the ones I have been able to see. My local thrift store doesn't have very many scarves; I've tried there before but to no avail. :^(

MG, I thought I could get lovely silk scarves at any dept. store too! But for some reason I can't find any. Maybe I haven't been looking at the right time--I didn't start looking until well into summer last year. I'll also maybe ask the SA--perhaps they're stashed in a section where I have been missing them. Macy's has practically 500 square feet of scarves and accessories, so you'd think they'd have something!

I love the idea of a sunhat. That was another thing I didn't get around to looking for until too late last year. Here's to early searching! I don't know how the size of my head compares to the rest of my body...I am a very small petite-sized person and wonder if I'm going to have trouble with hats too? *sigh* I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

I wear sunhats in the summer whenever I go for walks/am spending much time outside I have a couple straw ones (a cloche, which covers my ears for sure, and a panama hat which covers it depending on the angle). I also have a cloth one I got at REI last summer that is some kind of magical cross between cloche and bucket and even has a bit of a bonnet feel to it, but in a good way. That one definitely covers my ears. I can't find it on their site now (and it was on sale when I bought it so probably discontinued), but it was a bit like this one with a more angled brim.

I've tied both smaller rectangle scarves and squares folded as rectangles around my head in turban/headband styles before that stayed put & looked fashionable. I think the key is not so much in the shape (for Bella's first link at least; a rectangle could do that) but in the fabric & size. A pashmina is just too much fabric so it's going to look bulky!

My thrift stores always have square & smaller rectangular scarves, lots of which are silk, for $1.99 each. Worth a check of yours perhaps! A silk twill will give you more coverage than chiffon, but if you're buying a square it will end up folded, so the fabric will be at least doubled. Chiffon might work too in that case.

Places like Hobby Lobby have lots of very inexpensive cotton bandanas that might work for you. I've also been noticing scarf-like head wraps lately. Nordstrom had some on their clearance table in the scarf section. If wired ribbon and an oblong scarf had a baby...

You can get lovely silk square scarves at any department store, I'd think. I often find them thrifting too. Also etsy, for cheap. Do you sew at all? Those WallyWorld things are just fat quarters with a hem. Go to a fabric store and browse their fat quarters (in the quilting or calico section), they are usually several for just a few bucks. Calico is a bit stiff until it's washed a few times, but that stuff wears like iron and might be a better ear barrier than silk or chiffon anyway.
(I might spend way too much time thinking about scarves ...)

Thanks, rabbit and bella. Rabbit, maybe the reason I can't find anything is that I haven't thought to look in the juniors' section. I'll give that a whirl. I don't have a Ross (is that Canadian?) but I am not too far from Macy's.

I've seen a lot of stretchy head bands in all kinds of colors/materials/fabrics, from a band of sweater knit, to something that looks more like a chiffon, cotton, or silk scarf with a soft elastic underside. Do you know if these will work for you?

The sweater knit ones tend to be with winter wear like wool gloves and scarves, and the others I see near the scarf/accessory section or often associated with juniors. Ross has a ton of them, but I've also seen them at Marshalls and Macy's lately.

I should have known you would chime in, MG! I see you in your WIWs with scarves and the like all the time.

Is a kerchief the square scarf that you fold in half, then tie at the nape of your neck so that it has a V shape down the back? I did wear a couple of those this last summer, and they worked pretty well. But the only place I could find them was at Walmart, and let me tell you, the selection was less than stellar.

Where do you get yours?

I do I do! Of course I wear scarves in my hair, but more like a headband. Sometimes like a kerchief, which might be more what you're looking for. There are lots of videos on youtube about how to wear a head scarf, both for squares and oblong scarves. I also wear big floppy straw hats as a sunshade.

I have a lot of problems with earaches and have to wear hats or some kind of head covering pretty much year round when I am outside. In the past, I just used a pashmina wool scarf (rectangular) and tied it around my head. I look a little odd...I can't tie it in a fashionable way, although I've tried. I think it's the shape.

I'm wondering if there are other scarves (maybe square?) that would work better, or if there are lightweight hats that would work better. Do any of you wear hats or hair scarves in spring and summer?
