I vaguely recall once having a jean jacket. It's very difficult for me to find one to fit, and like many of you, I find them stiff, boxy and unflattering on my body. I have had many denim jackets and have worn them to death, but gave up trying them ages ago.

However, with a slightly different cut and color and mixed leather and fabric--well, it's been hard to find a light jacket so far this spring. Looking at the above photos I'm thinking it would be good to keep an open mind.

There are so many style options out there...you really can hate jean jackets and move on to something else...Someone on this board and forgive me I have thought and thought and I cannot remember who said this but it was to the effect that when you wear something, you are in effect saying no to wearing other things...So you should truly wear what you love because you don't have that many opportunities to wear everything...(terrible paraphrase but you get the gist)...These wise words have remained with me as I shopped, perused the online offerings, etc...I have backed away from saying yes to something and now I have a reason...I must truly love it...(This is butchered I know but i hope you get what I mean...This was a real "ah-ha" moment for me...
I give you permission to say no to jean jackets...(touch of the permission wand)

I have a raspberry one and that's it. May not qualify as real! Got it for a couple of dress or skirt outfits.
I don't have luck either. Proportions are wrong and they tend to feel constricting and I don't like some of the collars. And somehow, they are more for my imaginary lifestyle.
But, sort of the way moto's now come in so many variations, I could imagine one might work some time. Softer is key for me too. And probably not blue, but maybe. So I still try one on here or there, but I'm not actively looking.

Ack! I sooo love mixed media. I can't control myself. But would that be too much faux leather (I can't wear real; I'm a chicken in the face of PETA)?

The jean jackets in colour are really pretty.

...And, gosh I have a weak spot for Marc Jacobs - albeit I'm starting to feel *too old* for him. (I feel there's something very sweet about all the Marc Jacobs I ever bought... it's probably my fault it's all sweet!)

Rachy - when is a jeans jacket not a jeans jacket? When it's a quilted denim doublet from marc jacobs!! I do have a regular jeans jacket and it took me a ton of tries to find just the right flattering one. This jacket is a gazillion years old but when I saw it I had to have it. I have a love of steampunk and although I do not wear denim jackets that frequently, I find this one can swing in many different directions because of the styling. Is it a "jeans jacket" no not in the traditional sense, but I think the point is casual toppper that you love. Why would you buy anything you didn't like and enjoy at this point?

This thread and the outfit formula are making me think I might want to look for a new denim jacket. I used to wear them all the time, and especially loved wearing them over sweet summer dresses, but then just … stopped for some reason. I do still have one that's maybe 8 or 9 years old, but it's probably dated-looking and borderline too-tight by now. So maybe it's time to give an actual current version a try? And I'd only do one with some stretch because, otherwise, that would just be really annoying.

I have a mustard color jacket in a jean jacket style that I like wearing. I think because it's soft and stretchy?

I hadn't worn a jean jacket in years and bought one in the last year or so because I thought it was one of those items that everyone "must" have. But I didn't wear it. It didn't seem overly stiff but it wasn't very comfortable. And I don't know why exactly but I feel like a poser or something in a denim jacket.

Anyway, that jacket is no longer in my closet! And I'm fine with that.

Back from the bonfire... and I didn't think about jean jackets the whole time But yeah, I wonder about my imagination, that it may be overpowering my vision. I think jean jacket and I think a very stiff thing being worn by a dopey dude in guy liner and girl pants. Stiff is not my friend figure-wise, and in terms of self-image... I don't every want to be a Stacy giving gun racks to her wish-boyfriend (anybody remember Stacy?).

My imagination... I like to shop alone but sometimes I like someone to come with me because there are lots of things I don't see because I'm not prepared to see them.

I am with you, Rachylou. I don't know exactly why I dislike them. There's something about the whole vibe of a denim jacket that just rubs me all wrong. I think it's because they were very popular in high school, so maybe I just feel like a teeny bopper when I have one on. I don't know! I have often thought that one would be very versatile, however. But I am also on the look for a leather jacket, and hopefully that will be just as versatile as a jeans jacket and will make me not need the latter. I would rather have ten cardigans as toppers than one jeans jacket, even though the jeans jacket would certainly be easier and more efficient.

I think exactly like Adelfa in the sense that there are so many cuts and washes of jean jackets (even when the construction of them is along similar lines) that it can be one of those "never say never" things. Some might work, some won't.

My first jean jacket was my mom's that I took over before I was 12 (in those days and in that place, apparently they were called "hard guys" jackets). I embellished it with star-shaped studs and eventually overdyed it with a soft barn red before it got too soft and floppy to wear. But even though I adjusted it in those ways from its original intent, the fit was what made it work.

My next one? It was AWFUL. It was a longer style and in a very slightly faded black. I wanted to love it since I thought it fit my somewhat dressier (for a young person) style, but it was so uncomfortable. Stiff and heavy and fought my hourglass shape with its unforgiving bands and panels. Oh well.

I have a more classic one now, but like Lyn D.'s, it's thrifted (wore it yesterday with a skirt ensemble). I say no to styles all the time--if it's not your thing, don't bother with one. Or thrift one and experiment.

(PS, I'm with you on not being at ALL nostalgic for 80s hard rock!)

I think hating a particular item of clothing is different from thinking you hate an entire class of items. I didn't think denim jackets were "me" until I stumbled on one that was boxy, shortish, somewhat faded and very soft. There are so many variables about a "denim jacket" that maybe you could find one you liked. My favorite way to wear mine is with navy ankle pants and a mariniere. Like Suz, I would wear mine more often if I weren't wearing jeans all the time! I should try it with my black brocade skinnies....

I TRIED to like denim jackets, and I even bought one, but I just don't. I never, ever reach for it. I love leather jackets, utility/cargo/safari jackets and blazers, but not denim. I just can't make myself comfortable with it, even if it improves the look of some outfits. So I go with what I love instead.

I'm mourning for a denim jacket I wore 'til it practically melted apart. It was really lightweight and stretchy without looking, you know, ....fake. My current version is heavy and a tad tight (that was my fault, but the size up was made for Ben Franklin).

Feel free to pass over any item that doesn't make you happy! I do try these items again occasionally just to stretch myself. Sometimes it works, sometimes....meh.

I bought & gave away more than a few denim jackets before reading a post of Angie's where she mentioned tailoring her denim jacket to fit. That was a light bulb moment for me - I have x 2 jackets now that I wear a lot. I have pants that are very plain & fairly conservative if I wear them with a normal jacket they are too corporate (for me) but my denim jackets make them seem more relaxed somehow. I also like them with my harem pants & skirts.

I have not found one I like so I have never owned one. I really do not like the way they look on me.

If you don't like jean jackets, don't wear them. No need to.

I like mine (I have 3!) and wear them pretty often but not as often as my blazers. Probably because I wear jeans so often. And I don't very often do denim on denim.

Well, I sort of agree Rachy!
My jean jacket is thrifted, seems like a good idea, but I wore it yesterday for my take on Angie's post after not having worn for more than a year.
I'm with Dee too on having lots of blue denim bottoms, and I mostly wear dresses for smarter occasions that don't call for a casual topper.
I wouldn't pay retail for a jean jacket, and if I didn't have one it wouldn't create a wardrobe 'hole'.

Rachylou, I don't like them either (for me! Love them on others). I have tried to wear them bit I just don't think a denim jacket fits my style aesthetic. I'm ok with it:)

Angie, you are so sweet and the best. You know I need help. ETA: Also, Lilypup is a good shopper :D

--
Mo + all - I have to tell you, I thought I was the only person in the world wary of jean jackets! Silly, but true...
