My hair is long and voluminous, wavy/wurly/curly depending on the day, and I have bangs and volume around my face. I wear it up often, again with volume as I can. Tight hats aren't great because the flattening usually affects the bangs, and are usually incompatible with updos. Oh, and I have a big head.

For cold weather, order of preference:

Hair bands/vintage "skating caps" (knitted rectangle about 3" x 12" with ties)
Loose berets (only found knitted ones so far)
Snug berets (standard woolen ones)
Ear muffs (still feel awkward to me)
Wool felt fedora (think Indiana Jones) (mostly for damp weather but can be worn over a hair band)

Hair can usually fit inside the berets and sometimes the fedora, depending on how I need to angle it for the wind. I always wear snug berets angled, so the band cuts across the part in my bangs. It does leave one ear exposed! For bangs with the fedora, I usually brush them upward and pull the band down over my forehead. If I get warm enough or wear it long enough they'll still get flattened weirdly, but usually they're okay for a half hour.

For hot weather I only wear straw or fake straw fedoras. Again, think Indiana Jones with a traditional bash and wide brim, and not floppy.

I do like the fact that berets and beanies seem more acceptable to keep on when indoors. If I know that I will be taking my hat off, then I part my hair in the opposite direction before putting the hat on, so that there will be a little bit of volume when I take the hat off and flip my hair to it's usual parted side.

I have not tried it yet, but there are silk lined beanies that I hear help with keeping the curls from frizzing underneath.

Oh, hat head. Yes. Even with a pixie, I experience some minor hat head issues. On the other hand, I also get some benefits. When my hair is overdue for a cut, it tends to "poof." Often a session with a hat and/or my bike helmet is exactly what I need to flatten it a bit!

With freshly cut hair I try to wear one of my lighter, looser hats, to prevent any squishing. Cashmere is good.

My hair responds much better to hoods than to hats, so I generally go with a hooded scarf. That way, my entire head is in so I don't have a line, and the scarf allows me to tie it so that it doesn't blow down or off. It can be put on and taken off far more gingerly than a standard beanie.

I don't have too much of a problem during regular around-town wear. If my hair does look flattened or frizzy post-hat, wetting my hands and running them through my hair while leaning over so my hair is upside down does a pretty decent job remedying flyaways and reintroducing some volume.

If I'm doing something more demanding where I sweat under the hat, my hair looks reliably miserable once I take the hat off. My solution, now that my hair is longer, is to carry a scrunchie with me and throw my hair up into a bun when I'm indoors. Or, just keep the hat on! :D

I have to say that my preferred (winter) hat style of recent years — a slouchy cashmere beanie/beret — works quite well for keeping my head just warm enough without flattening my hair when I remove it. I think because it is lightweight and not too snug, it works. The find below is one style I own — I have another from Banana Republic from maybe 9 years ago in light grey, and a blue one and two (yes, two!) black ones by Portolano. I bought the second black one when I thought I’d lost the first one, and will guard them carefully because it seems the quality of those hats in recent years is not what it used to be. I’m wearing one of them in the pic below.

When it comes to summer hats, well, I give up and know it just is what it is. When my head sweats, all bets are off when it comes to what my hair will do. Baseball caps or sun hats, the band at the forehead tends to make my bangs bend in a way that sometimes looks ok if I just tousle my hair when I remove the hat, and other times it just looks hilarious. It’s the price I pay for sun protection.

I also definitely feel the struggle of a hat-and-glasses wearer. Another reason why I like only the lightest weight hat that doesn’t press around my head and pinch my glasses behind my ears. Add to that the face masks of the pandemic, and I looked truly incognito.

I wear sunhats in summer due to our relentless Australian sun. I don't alter my hairstyle to cater to wearing hats, but I find having visible hair when wearing hats (my hair is currently shoulder-length) looks best on me. I usually find that if I comb my hair after wearing a hat it bounces back, albeit slightly flattened.

I have an oddly shaped head--sort of flat at the back. Which means tight beanies are out, but more generous beanies and berets are in. Ball caps and bucket hats are alright. I've never been into the porkpie/fedora look for women--too Hollywood mom/brunchy.

I do wear a loose beanie in the morning, because my head sweats at night, and I wake up with my hair in a weird shape. I don't worry about my hair much at other times, because I cultivate a messy look. I definitely don't worry about the cut as it relates to hats--my hair is straight.

Here's a question for anyone. Do you wear wide-brimmed sun hats? Because every time I wear one, I have to hold it on my head because of the wind.

I don't have curly hair, mine is straight, but fine and very prone to static. For me, I find it makes a difference on my shampoo and conditioner that I use. I just ran out of Joico shampoo yesterday and switched to Redken and I notice that my hair is more staticky today (with no hat)! If I'm somewhere that has a bathroom, I wet my hands so they're damp and run them through my hair, which seems to take care of the static. Or, I've also wiped a dryer sheet over my hair to try to calm it down, and I can tuck one in my bag.

Re: the hat head, yeahhh, that's harder to fix...it isn't as bad if my hair is completely dry, but if it is damp, then I do get a demarcation line and a flip. However, I do not like cold ears or a cold head, so I will wear my hat anyway.

Flat hair is the reason I avoided wearing hats for long time. Now I tend to pick hats that are not tight, not heavy and just accept it.
My hair is thin so it looks more flat after wearing a hat, whatever I do.
I usually keep my hair shorter in the winter, don't like when it sticks out between a hat and a scarf or a turtleneck.
Don't experience much static but might spray a hat with anti-static.

Well my hair does the mad flip no matter whether I wear a hat or not- that's why I'm relying on the wigs! Eventually it'll grow out enough so I don't look straight out of mom's yearbook :/
I don't think the sunhat affects my (natural) hair, though I also haven't been able to wear in down in more than 6 months. I always wear sunnies too- and that hasn't been a problem.

The brimmed winter hat is ok, from what I can remember. Not sure if I wore it at all last year. It's mainly beanies that flatten the top. Of course if it's cold enough to need a hat, I'm staying inside as much as I can

I wear a straw hat sometimes in the summer and seldom -when really needed only a cloche in winter just because I always get the dreaded hat head underneath. Somebody said a hat with fine, thin and no root lift-flat and straight hair +bangs (and specs:-)) is a mare and I did have these (except specs for only the last 12 yrs) all my life- so you got my answer... BUT in the meantime-I always gather compliments when I wear one. I don't have good hair so adding something on my head it seems elevates and frames my face and body somehow.

I generally tend to tie my hair back when l am wearing a hat,The fringe is the most challenging part.l either tuck in all in and wear the hat low on my brow or wear it further back letting much fringe show depending on the style of hat.

I have no problem with hats because my hair is thick and I wear it straight. DH, with his fine hair has trouble and has been known to go without his hat.

I would wear a hat every day, whether for sun protection or warmth or both, if it weren't for this and also the annoying problem of what to do with said hat indoors.

I also have the same issue. My hair is fine, low density, silky, no root lift, and quite curly. A hat smashes and flattens things, and my curls don’t revive without a good dose of steam/misting and some heat. Basically: I leave the hat on or I finger fluff and just go with it.

I take heart in this: an image consultant I worked with told me that nearly everyone gets hat hair. Unless maaaaybe they have pin straight, high density, silky hair that just falls into place no matter what. It was a revelation and reassurance knowing hat hair happens to even the influencers haha!

Had a zero hat head problem with my pixie.

With the new long hair, my hair goes flat when I take the hat off! I fix as best I can afterwards. It's not too bad. I carry on. It's much more important that I wear a hat when I need to

Very fair skin and very sunny climate- I have to wear hats all summer and most of spring and autumn.
It means that I’ve totally given up on having a fringe/bangs. I have a gentle wave, and also get the mad flip outwards at certain lengths. I’ve found it helps to only finger comb my hair when wet (don’t brush or comb- this means careful washing to avoid creating tangles), then ‘scrunch’ it into shape and leave it to dry. It seems to ensure the natural waves sit better. Wearing a hat on damp hair means hair madness- flat on top, and flips out under the brim. Sometimes I damp and rescrunch to fix that.
