I found the most totally awesome slouchy beanie at Nordies this fall and when I went to get the information to send, they no longer have it...Anyway, I went to the men's department and found a cashmere Rail beanie...It is TDF...I can just pop it on pull down a few bangs and I am ready...This one got about a million positive reviews so I tried it and hey I indeed liked it...Perhaps you could peruse the men's department and score a similar find...smile

The solution to hat hair is no hat. I choose earmuffs for colder temperatures, and prefer the hood of my puffer over the hats I own. The hood is large, so it doesn't give me too much hat hair, but unlike the hat, it blocks out the wind. Win-win. If you do choose a hat, you could add some dry shampoo indoors, which will help with volume.

Wow. Look at all this wisdom! Today ended up being a very busy day, and I'm headed back out again in a minute. Just as well I haven't had time to shop yet...so many new suggestions here. I'll be back later to follow all your links.

I did do a quick search last night for ear bands. All I seemed to find were either gear-type or they had big rose decorations on them. Most were at least partially acrylic. Even still there were very few. Is there some other way I should be searching for these?

Angie...I was hoping for something a bit less radical than chopping off my hair;-)

I like slouchy berets for this reason. Kinda like a beanie, but less length and a little more fullness. You can adjust it to cover the ears or not, depending on how much warmth you need. I have a little head though, so many hats that work for others are overwhelming on me.

Good question! I really only put on a hat if I have nowhere to go later or it's late in the day. I can pull it off better if I'm wearing my hair wavy - it tends to bounce back. Otherwise flathead hat head for me too! Good luck

Fedoras are great for the top of your head, but not warm enough for my climate in winter. Also, they blow off in the wind. I think of them as purely decorative hats, much as I love them. Mr. Suz has one for dressy situations and for spring/ fall.

Great thread! I suffer from hat hair too. I want to try SandyG's trick of twisting up ringlets under the hat, because I have fine wavy hair too that not only gets flattened but straightened when I wear a hat.

What I have found helps for me is to wear a loose beanie or a loose beret (the beanie works better than the beret). Also, when I come back in and take my hat off, I rub a little water in my hands and then turn my head upside down and rub the water into the roots of my hair, shaking the hair at the root, which helps revive some of the volume. Sometimes I use a little sea salt spray with the water.

I'll second Laura's recommendation: a hood. I have the same issue with my fine curly hair, and on top of that, I also get a headache if I wear something even the tiniest bit constricting on my head. So I pull the hood of my puffer over my head. I'm in the frigid Midwest and this has been doing the trick because my puffer is really warm and the hood is generously sized (I also realized that the faux-fur that lines the hood is not simply for looks or warmth, but also to keep the hood in place when you wear it).
The only problem with the hood is that it doesn't give me full peripheral vision because the hood doesn't move with my head, if that makes sense (my head turns but the hood is still there blocking the vision). If I need to look to the side (as in, crossing the street) I have to put it down for an instant or to hold it so it moves along with my head.

I understand walking the dog several times a day. My dog likes the cold and would go on more walks if I let her. I can't go hatless because my ears hurt tremendously when cold, so I wear fur earmuffs. I currently am using my black fur earmuffs, because I broke my favorite mink earmuffs that I have had over 30 years. They are easy to take on and off and actually look good and no hat hair.

Similar to Aziriphale, I find my hair sometimes looks a bit better after it's been flattened by my hat. Which is a darn good thing. Where I live, there are not many days when it's sensible to go outdoors for more than ten minutes without a hat between mid-December and mid-March.

Try a merino wool hat -- the material helps. I don't really get too much of a static problem; I guess that is humidity dependent.

Do you have a puffer with a hood? You could also wear your hood instead of a hat; where you live, you probably don't need both (unlike me...today it was beanie PLUS down hood...wheeee!!!!)

When I run, I use an ear band -- that's enough for not-super-cold temps for me and does not mush the hair up.

Photos of different kinds of toques and beanies for your enjoyment.

Loose pin curls work beneath hats, and afterwards hair gets fluffed out with your fingers and retains some shape. Twirling your hair into ringlets and pulling them up to the crown of your head before you put the hat or cap on will work, too. I do this with baseball caps so my fine wavy hair isn't completely flattened.

I don't wear hats for that very reason. I have hair that is thick in quantity but fine strands, and very prone to static. I only wear a scarf wrapped over my head and then around my neck. I'll add earmuffs if it's really cold.
The tips about hand lotion do work, I also keep hair spray at my desk at work.
If you must wear a hat though, you want it to be at least 50% cotton. The synthetic fibers don't allow breathability and that causes your head to sweat and adds to the static problem to boot.

Well, see, that's where the snood gets versatile. Drapey if you want minimum mussing of your hair, and a double-wind around neck, pulled up over the head to the forehead with a twist or small knot to snug it under the chin, if the wind starts blowing or the temp is in the negatives. Worn in the latter way, mine stays on in a 45-50 mph gale force wind. If it's windier than that, keep that poor pup indoors!

Stay away from acrylic -- too much static and it's not even warm. Go for wool or cashmere or wool/cashmere blend.

Otherwise, I carry a travel size bottle of moisturizer (hand cream) in my bag at all times. For some reason, I find hand cream works better than leave-in conditioner. I just rub some on my hands and then fluff my hair back up with my fingers.

Oh my, it's a whole new language...beanie, toque (which I googled with a G instead of a Q..I assume Canadians don't wear lake trout on their heads;-)), now snood.

Is the picture below a beanie? Is it what you had in mind?

Gaylene, the snood idea is fun. I wonder if I could keep it on my head when the wind blows?
