I actually ended up with low pigtails yesterday! Clearly I'm channeling MG & Helen. I liked how it looked with the hat, but I looked about 15 with the hat off (...it didn't help I was too hot to bother with make up). So I'll use that solution for the many days when I only see other people outside. ;)

The bob suggestions made me laugh! I looooove bobs, and would love to have one year-round, but in the summer I don't want any hair at all touching my neck (I run hot). I've always gone with blunt bobs in the past, and a blunt bob would definitely leave hair on my neck, unless I had it cut in the front to just below my ear lobe, which is a weird length on me. But maybe there's a different kind of bob that could work. Hmmm. Time for a new thread I think!

What about a... I don't know what it's called. Like a crown braid but just twists, not braided, along the side of your head. Then it gets the little stray bits of hair out of the way, but might still be visible under the hat to avoid the big hat / no hair look.

Or two little ponytails.

I agree with Runcarla. Bob is the best. You don't have to go all short - just below the jaw or jaw length. Great for summer too: easy, dries quickly with very little styling required.

These days I mostly just wear my hair down under hats. My head is so big that any sort of updo doesn't fit in any hat. A low ponytail (like at the nape of the neck) worked when my hair was longer; a fun variation that avoids the bald look is a low side ponytail but that requires more length.

This is an eternal problem for me. I have a big head and way too much hair to ever get under a hat. So I either wear a woven visor to accommodate an updo (which is not exactly stylish, but in OK summer, I don't give a flip), or if I'm wearing an actual straw hat type thing it's either two pigtails or one low ponytail. If it's very hot and sticky, I add a sports type headband to help absorb the, uh, glow at nape and forehead. When my hair was shorter like yours, I wore two low ponys instead of pigtails. Somehow it seems a little more grownup than the braids. With shoulder length hair, ponys behind each ear (as opposed to above them like children wear) is actually rather a subtle look.

Two low loose pigtails? Like Alasse wore recently? I have a similar issue with winter wool hats or beanies.with short hair, they cover it all, and I look bald!

A below the ear bob style (think flapper) seems to look great with all kinds of hat styles from big floppy sun hat to beret. Up-dos work particularly well with straw hats and are conducive for using a hat pin.

With short, pixie-ish hair, I either wear the hat with bangs brushed to one side, or if I need more volume under the hat, I wear a bandana or wide cloth headband.

Google or Pinterest Downton Abbey for some great hat hair inspiration!

I'm with Staysfit:). Actually as long as some hair shows (in my case bangs) then it's ok. I've stopped worrying about that stuff .

A low side bun could work. Or like L'Abeille said, Heidi braids. You could even roll the two braids into low buns.

A chignon at the nape of the neck works if you still want visible hair, but you have to place it low enough not to interfere with the crown of the hat at the back.
For outdoorsy activities (sailing, camping, skiing) I will do Heidi braids. Although they have perhaps juvenile /cutesy connotations, I tell myself that mature East Indian and Native North American women can carry it off, so I should be able to.

Longish hair seems like the easiest solution with hats. If one's head is too small for most hats (like mine is), a hairstyle that adds volume like braids wrapped around the head would help hold a hat.

We're having a heat and sun wave here (ugh), and I found myself wanting it wear a big brimmed hat and have my hair off my neck and not look bald while wearing said hat. Suddenly 19th century hair styles make far more sense. Lol Short of giving myself spaniel ear curls, does anyone have any hairstyling suggestions? My hair is medium-ish length, around my collar bone, but it doesn't have any layers, which makes up dos easier.
