I hear you 100% on non-fab hats that are necessary as gear-type items. I have one that has similar function. It’s not cute or flattering but it’s going to Africa with me because I need protection from the sun.

I like the newsboy cap style on you. I have a couple of similar styles but they have gone unworn since I discovered the floppy beret. Maybe I should do a hat edit too!

Very wise decisions. My favourites were #1 and the caps - but also keep the one that gives you the best sun protection and that you wear hiking. Hats and caps are an essential for me, being fair skinned and living in a sunny climate.

JAileen, both my parents have had basal cell carcinoma, and I had several pre-cancerous moles removed in my 30’s. Since then I have been diligent about wearing a good hat and sunscreen when I’m outside.

I’m glad you’re keeping the Solumbra hat. I thought you’d need a hiking hat. At the dermatologist today, he removed a suspicious thing from my arm. He said it was a good thing I use so much sunscreen, and wore brimmed hats.

Thanks Angie! I think I will take your advice, except I will Keep the ugly Solumbra hat until I can find a replacement because I use it like gear. I’m sincere about paring down my wardrobe. Its a particularly good time to edit because I have developed confidence in my personal style. I am better able to eliminate distracting wardrobe items. Hats are particularly difficult because my head is so small that I have had a tendency to keep anything that fit rather than being picky about its appearance.

Christina F., DH will be pleased that someone noticed the Chat Noir tee. For the past two years DH’s work has involved periodic travel to and from France. I have developed a taste for Meert Chocolate, and as a longer lasting gift DH purchased this tee.

Hmm, so many varied opinions so far. Clearly it’s hard to judge hats! If I needed to pick three and leave behind the rest, I would choose the pink wallaroo, the practical Solumbra with strings and the brown Newsboy/Baker Boy. The Solumbra isn’t fashionable, but it’s so practical that it ends up going with me in the summer for almost all activities. I should look to see if they have it in a better color.......it was a gift from my mother so I feel awkward about replacing it.....

I love hats but rarely wear them because I don't think I look good in a hat. I would get rid of #2 since you hate the color. No reason to wear something you hate. I really like #3, 5, and the baker boy hats. I'm not sure about the fedora either. I would probably keep #1 because it's a fun color and get rid of the grey version. I'm not sure what colors you wear though so maybe the grey one is more practical for you.

OMG, I love the newsboy caps on you! Especially #8. I also really love #1 -- flattering light it casts!

Fit is so difficult with hats and they can be tough to wear with shorter hair. I really love them but have trouble finding ones that work on me.

I love hats. Props to you for wearing such classic, practical and sassy style accessories! I agree hats can be tricky though, especially avoiding looking costumy in them. IMO you look best in the more slightly dramatic, divaesque, statement hats #4 and #5. I also like the fit of #1, but the colour looks hard to style. The baker boy style could work, but the fit looks a little snug on you, maybe it's just the picture? Could a more oversized version work better? Best of luck on your hat edit, how fun!

Off topic, but I love your Chat Noir shirt!!!

On topic, these all look good, but I like #3 and #8 the very best. I think it's a very subjective thing, and you may want to cull based on how many occasions you have to wear each one. #2 is probably very useful in the outdoors, for instance, but I understand not liking the color. I got a gardening hat in straw with a string like that (by Miracle Gro, believe it or not) for our family beach house, and I ended up loving it so much that I brought it home - I had intended to leave it there. Maybe you need something like that in a non-khaki color.

My hands-down favourites here are the pink Wallaroo (#1) and the brown tweed newsie (#8).

Both Wallaroos look quite flattering and offer lots of sun protection, but the pink one is a better colour for a summer hat.

The fedoras (3 and 6) look a bit too masculine to my eye (and I say this as someone who's a fan of the tomboy/garçonne look).

The one with the chin strap (#2) looks very functional but not something I'd ever wear for fashion purposes; does it get enough use in gear situations (boating/fishing) to merit keeping?

The grey newsie is cute but seems a bit small/tight; I prefer slouchier...

hats are IMO hard...its really tough to find the perfect intersection of form, function and fit...and then to layer color on top...

#5 & #6 are my favorites, but I don't see anything wrong with the rest of them...I'm generally not a fan of fedora's, but I like that yours has a wider brim...

#2, 6, 7, 8 - are the ones I like best - but, I think it comes down to occaision and styling.

#2 - with jeans, a utility jacket (olive?), rubber boots or hiking boots. A neckerchief knotted at the throat in blues, green, and other colours (pink, beige?)

#6 - with a long winter coat or trench and a soft blanket scarf.

#7, 8 - with a pea coat or jean jacket with puffer layers over or a longer narrow military jacket. Possibly with a leather moto.

I wear hats all year. In summer I need something to keep sun off my neck and out of my eyes. I like sporty sun visors best, but they don't provide adequate protection. I have tried a variety of wide brim hats but am not sure which if any I should keep? I don't love any of them, but I'm not sure I would ever feel wonderful about a hat.

The hat with the strings stays on in the wind, but I hate the color. The two Wallaroo hats (pink and grey) pack well for travel but the brims collapse in the wind. The Eric Javits hat with a scarf and the fedora, both straw like, seem overpowering.

In winter I need hats for my jackets and coats that don't have hoods. My favorite style is a Baker Boy hat. I have two. My favorite is not a great color but fits perfectly. The other is a good color but may be a bit casual. I'm not sure what to think of the fedora? Should I look for something else? Should I keep it?
