I think so yes, I love sleek, strong, simple outfits and also really like minimalist home decor (lots of light, white walls with black, grey, green and blue accents, wooden floors, and not too much going on - e.g. Scandinavian modern). I prefer to have a bit more colour options and patterns in my wardrobe, but otherwise both seem to be very much aligned.

First off, hello, faaaaabulous couches!

But to the point: In some ways, I got on YLF because I downsized in living space, meaning I have to do things differently and have a lot of excess wardrobe to deal with. The same is also true for the rest of my belongings. YLF has given me some criteria and an approach for attacking this task for the whole lot of it.

Stylewise, I'm probably getting clearer about the fact that my style is "playful traditional." And I'm making more room for the playful, the more modern part of my style in both dress and home.

I think I have learned so much about process from YLF that applies to my home. That includes my inspiration file, where I collect outfits I like in one folder, and rooms I like in another :), and really really being PPP for home stuff, because it costs so much more than clothing.
What is the third P?? Picky, patient and... perfect?

Astrid, I would say the same, that my home has always reflected my personal style but as my personal style has developed, so have my decor. Love to hear what your plans are for decorating:)

Mochi that's a good point. Finance is a huge consideration. There is more turnover in my wardrobe than my furniture for example. The sofas we bought recently were definitely investment pieces (first time with furniture for us) and I suspect many dresses will come and go during the life time of both sofas. Love to hear your further thoughts on this.

Kim you are funny, but clearly a wise shopper. You reminded me of when I bought new cushions about 8 years ago. I spent nearly two hours in the store and then the same amount of time once home 'positioning" them. DH thought I was mad. Made good choices though and it was worth the time and effort.

Krista that's interesting. My thinking is that certain things in our personal style make us feel good, then living in an environment that reflects the same would also make us feel good.

Dianthus that sounds right. Major peices remain but the accents change, which is probably common for many of us in wardrobes as well.

Diana I am going to suggest 'electic' to replace thrown together. I bet your home is warm, comfortable and interesting.

Shiny that's wonderful that Jean was able to assist like that. It certainly makes sense that we would be attracted to similar colors, lines etc to what we like to wear. And long term choices like paint, wall paper, etc are huge and can be quite stressful.

Absolutely! Those who remember me from before may remember this: Jean helped me pick paint colors for my home. She is BRILLIANT at this! I had long choked on decorating, particularly when it comes to paint colors. Jean was a huge help, and made me realize decorating is not all that different than dressing one's self.

That said... the master bedroom still needs work to "pull it all together." I keep looking for the perfect - yet elusive - duvet cover.

Ha, both my outfits and my home decor are "thrown together" but the difference is that the former is deliberate and the latter is not. =P. I would like to live in a more minimalist home but i am just too messy.

I think for me, it's the shopping habits that have crossed over to my home decor. I used to shop for home decor the same way I'd shop for clothes. Enter the store, find the best option, buy it, and live with it. After learning to be so much more selective in my clothing purchases, I've adopted those habits into my home decor shopping. Now, I go to 5 stores, buy 5 options at each store, bring it all home, drive everyone in the house crazy asking for their opinions, and then return everything and start all over because nothing was perfect And, I have to say, I'm loving my home now more than ever before, so I guess my pickyness is paying off!

On a side note, I was at my hairdressers the other day and we got to talking about paint colors. She said that she heard once to use colors in your home that you like to wear, and then you will always "look" good in your own house. I found that interesting, as I always use cool colors in my home (and that is what I dress in). I was currently in the process of choosing a paint color for my boys' bedroom, and was contemplating a warmer color than I would ever choose for the rest of my house. We ended up tweaking the color to take the warmth out, and both the boys and I are much happier with it.

I was thinking no but then realized that I shop for home decor the way I should shop for fashion. I have a custom ordered natuzzi leather sofa and loveseat that I've had for at least 12 years. I will probably have it recovered at some point because it has such beautiful lines. I change the accessories (art, etc) and the wall color fairly often but the major pieces are fairly neutral and classic and I don't tire of them.

Totally linked but it happened in reverse for me!
I've always known what I like in decor and how to decorate my home but it's really only been since I joined YLF that I realized that the things I prefer in home decor are the same preferences for my wardrobe. The basic premises are simple, uncluttered and colorful.

Great topic, Deb! This really helped me to clarify exactly what I've been thinking about my relationship to decorating and dressing myself!

I don't have time to give this a more thoughtful response at the moment, but I have pondered on this question myself. I do wonder about any cross-pollination in tastes between fashion and home decor. At the same time, money is a finite quantity and to give resources to one category means taking away from another, so some women might have a much higher priority over their public presentation (clothing/accessories/grooming, etc), or their personal space (home). Interesting topic. Will try to gather my thoughts together and come back later!

I would say yes, because I also tend to purge more with my other stuff (same as my clothes) and I think I'm more minimalistic now (although I don't mean minimalism as an interior style). I would say that my home decor goes well with my wardrobe, although home decor always was important to me and my style had to catch up so to say. Of course as a student with a small flat I'm restricted by lack of space and money.

Even so I always get compliments on my flat and home decor when people visit for the first time... I would say it's a mix of classic with retro elements, romantic, feminine, organic and a bit quirky. As far as that is possible with multi-purpose rooms.

Actually I thought about doing a major redecorating next spring when I have more time again for things like that. I already have some ideas.

Hi Ladies,

Mochi commented on my post yesterday that my home looked as though it reflected by modern classic tendencies. This got me wondering if YLF has inspired not only our wardrobes, but also our home décor.

My home has always been very monochromatic. Lots of black and white, neutrals, streamlined, uncluttered and simple (perhaps even a touch boring and predictable).

Thinking about this I realised that as Red entered my wardrobe as a strong accent color, red also became part of my kitchen. Red Kettle, Salt & Pepper Shakers, Cutting board, etc.

Patterns crept into my wardrobe, mostly by way of blouses and shoes and coloured and patterned cushions replaced my 5 year old solid neutral cushions.

Colour was introduced to my black heavy wardrobe with coloured skinnies, shoes, and skirts and our two new couches arrived in purple corduroy and green patterned velvet! And just because there is a chance the couches sound ‘questionable’ I have included pics. 2 years ago my friends would NEVER have imagined I would choose these.

YLF has definitely had an impact on not only my wardrobe but also my home. As I gained the confidence to try new things in my wardrobe, I found I started to be more adventurous in my home too.

So I am curious to know if YLF has impacted your choices in home décor too. Is your wardrobe style and style of living environment closely linked .

xxx Deborah
