Thanks ladies! If a Winnipeg netive signs off on this coat, then I'm good to go. :p For ton-Canadians, Winnipeg is close to as cold as it gets without actually being in the arctic.

Hey, you and me have joined the ranks of puffer owners! Yours is fab. I'm a sucker for a lovely shaped collar and a diagonal fastening, so for me it's a slam dunk, as Angie would say :) Great colour too Michelle. Enjoy your new coat!

Ridiculously late to this thread Michelle but had to chime in and say that this is one of the nicest puffer coats I've seen. It's got great details and isn't just a "puffy coat", you know?

And personally, I don't mind a slightly longer sleeve for a puffer coat - that added bit of coverage at the wrist is welcome when it's wicked cold. Once you pop on gloves it really isn't noticeable.

Thanks, CJH. I think what I most enjoy about this puffer is the handful of unexpected but cool details just like that.
Rachy: I swear to god a puffer wasn't necessary until this very week! It's been incredibly mild up to now. That said, the temperature has plummetted like a rock and I've been mentally high-fiving myself ever since I bought this on Friday. :)
KM: I loved your story about trying to brave our climate with a leather jacket!! Even I'm not that bold. Hope you're better equipped now!
Your reply

Michelle, I think perhaps I see some black other than the fur and the edging of the collar at the lower edge when the collar is open but just may be a black blouse underneath? I'm guessing you will be able to feel where the black lower edge of the coat collar facing is, as there will be a seam where the black meets the blue. It appears to be a couple of inches wide and probably extends the length of the front opening as a facing as Sarah described.

Oh yes, keep the coat. I like it belted in front. Great neckline, esp. if you run warm and can actually wear it that way.

I'm glad you found something that works for you! I have similar feelings about puffers and live in one of the few countries on earth that give Canada a run for its money in terms of coldness (Russia), but almost no one wears puffers. It's fur all the way, whether faux or real. I have an anorak with a faux fur lining, and it serves me well.

I just wanted to say that I had to smile when I read about your resolve to brave a Canadian winter without a puffer. I'm from South America and moved to the US over a decade ago. I landed in western/upstate NY, close to the border with Canada, with plenty of "minus-temperature" days, lake-effect snow, windchill, and even ice storms.

BUT I knew nothing about dressing for winter. I didn't like the sporty look of puffers, so I spent my whole first winter wearing a leather jacket. YES. A leather jacket. Of course, I layered insanely: always a very thick wool cardigan underneath, plus a sweater, plus a long-sleeve shirt etc. And I was, of course, always cold (I run cold, too).

Then one day, as I shivered on my way to the car, a friend--Canadian by the way--for the first time enlightened me (smiling at my tropical naivety) that I, indeed, needed more than a leather jacket or even wool coat for that clime.

By the way, I love your puffer: the color, fit, trim, and especially the neckline. I like it belted too. My puffer is belted and I like being able, sometimes, to belt it without zipping or buttoning it up, if it's not too cold or if I'll only wear it briefly--so it's actually a practical feature for me!

Thanks, all. :)
Angie, no, the sleeve length won't be an issue with Revie, and the belt somehow doesn't bother me in the least. Do you prefer the look of it fastened conventionally or done up at the back?
Sarah: I think I get it re. the positioning of the black. Thank you for that.
Your reply

Michelle, it doesn't have black trim around the collar per se. However, the "facing" on the placket of snaps is black. When the top of the snapped part is open, as in your photos, then that black is visible. For the "underneath" part of the coat, the facing faces outward, so it's visible when the top of the coat is unsnapped. On the overlapping top part of the coat, the black is visible when the "collar" is open, because the collar is turned back. I think it looks nice. It's a subtle color-blocking effect. If you had snapped everything all the way up, the black wouldn't be visible. I think that I just butchered that description, so let me know if that's not clear. Or else someone with better descriptive skills can weigh in.

Hi Michelle, I didn't realize you hadn't purchased one of the original puffers. I'm glad you waited, first of all because of the price, and second of all because I love this colour!! Sounds like a good choice for you. It looks gorgeous on you.

Thanks, guys. Could someone kindly clear something up for me? I knew that the faux-fur trim along the hood was black, and that there was also a bit of black around the back tunnel that holds the belt, but is there also black trim around the collar itself? If so, the SA failed to mention it and I wasn't aware of that detail. Not a problem either way, I just like to know all I can about my wardrobe items!
Your reply

Great to see you Michelle! this is a great version of the puffer we all need for those colder days. Love love and love the deap teal color, the diagonal closure, and the dramatic colar with the black trim-in one word, it's not a common puffer for sure. It's a stylish one, so wear it proud and have fun in the colds, too:-).

You knocked it out of the park, Michelle. Beautiful color, rich and deep, but not the flat black that is everywhere on the streets of Chicago! Love the contrast on the neck, the shaping in the stitching, and the very flattering diagonal zipper. The length provides very important warmth to the bum, without being overwhelmingly long.

I've had a lot of puffers on this winter --- I know a good looking one when I see it! You'll look great and feel cozy this winter.

Oh yay ya yay, ladies!! I'm so delighted with the positive feedback so far because I'm actually, gasp, excited about this coat! All the moreso because I just looked at the forecast for the week and saw temperatures of -19C!! That's a bit much even for me. So this puffer will get to earn its stripes sooner than later!

As a point of interest, I thought I'd link to the other coats I was considering in case anyone is inclined to see how my purchase stacks up.

Here is the old "Lands End Coat Cage Match" thread with the two options I was considering from that store:
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....ch---you-d

And here are the two that Angie highlighted in her Puffer roundup. They looked beautiful, but were no longer available by the time I got to them. They also would have been considerably more expensive, even on sale, due to international duty fees
Bernardo: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/be.....0783?cm_ca
Jessica Simpson: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/je.....t=datafeed

How does my AdditionElle coat compare? Also, is that not the most clever name for a plus-size store? They used to feature dubious merchandise, but they've come a very, very long way in recent years and now make up the majority of my wardrobe.
  Your reply

I have zero experience with puffer coats, but I think this looks really good on you. The colour is lovely and the asymmetry of the closure is very appealing. As to the practicalities, I will have to defer to those who live in colder conditions!

I think it is a keeper. The color is gorgeous on you and the diagonal line is super flattering. Much to my surprise, I really like it belted, especially in the back view. And, I'm with Suz that longer sleeves are just fine on a winter coat like this one where you want the extra wrist coverage when you move your arms.

It's so good to see you post again, Michelle. I've missed you on the forum. Happy New Year!

It's been many years since I've lived in a climate that requires a coat, so I may not be the best judge of use, but as far as aesthetics, this is a great looking coat. It's figure flattering belted, the diagonal zipper adds a fun, interesting element and the sleeves may be a tad long but no, they don't look ridiculous. My vote is keep!

It's gorgeous on you, and I actually prefer it best with the belt! Creates a really nice shape.

Thanks Suz!! So glad a fellow Canuck got to chime in. :)
First of all, the filling is 50% down and 50% feathers, according to the website. AE has majorly upped their game in terms of quality and style quotient. This coat was priced right in line with LandsEnd stuff, so it better be the real deal. :p
I do intend to wear black gloves with this, yes. I'm also catching myself dreaming about pairing it with a winter white scarf, something along the lines of the Nordstrom eyelash fringe ones, but that might be overkill. :p
Your reply

Michelle, I was just thinking about you. Happy New Year!

I adore this coat. It's stellar. Beautiful colour and fab design. I love the asymmetrical closure. I know this coat will not be as warm as a Lands' End coat (or similar) and probably is not real down (though I will have to go back to read the description). But for your needs, running warm as you do -- this will be perfect.

I am a fusspot about sleeves, and almost always go on about shortening them (ask poor Diana, who has suffered at my edicts endlessly) --- but I do not consider these too long IF you are also going to wear gloves. A puffer or other winter coat needs longer sleeves, full stop. And they will not look long if your gloves are black or dark. It will be one long line.

Good questions, Sarah:
1. The sleeves are maybe a tad long for my taste. Not sure if that could be changed, but I don't think it's a dealbreaker at this stage unless it looks ridiculous.
2. I have no problem wearing the belt in either configuration. So belted at the back is no problem if it looks best that way. It's very secure that way and feels perfectly fine.
3. I almost never put my hood up because covering my ears when I walk leaves me less able to gauge my surroundings, which consequently makes me feel unsafe. The hood is removable,, btw.

Hope this helps.
   Your reply
