I went with the smaller of my 2 typical size and the sleeves were long enough for me. I too have "ape arms" as they're called in my family. It is a nice cord jacket-- thinkcorduroy so the jacket feels comfortable. I decided after trying it on with things at home that I did not like the puffed sleeves. I am sad about that because I really have my eye on a mustard cord blazer. The closest I've found is the J. Crew velvet one which I have bought but will wait to wear.
