This is why I've started getting really focused on wardrobe color palette, especially tops and jackets. I think I will be having to rely on whatever bit of glow they can provide.

You know what's eye-opening (and slightly alarming)? Having your passport photo taken. No smiling, face straight-on. The truth comes out!

I'm with Suz. I just try to smile more. I can't say I'm delighted at the prospect of aging (and I'm definitely noticing that the aging process is picking up pace, now that I'm in my 40s), but I'm not convinced about fillers. Like Gaylene says, I think the margin for error is quite small. I suspect it can totally work and look great, if the doctor knows what he/she is doing. Or, it can make you look like a muppet.

My solution is perma-smile. It does lead to more wrinkles, however. ;)

In all seriousness, I have never investigated any of this, and I try never to look at my unsmiling face in the mirror. I guess that is a form of denial, but for now it has to be okay, because I can't afford any treatments anyway. I am all in favour of women doing whatever they need to do to feel great. After all, I still colour my hair, despite considering not doing so.

I'm with Janet I think! I just feel like I'm developing a kind of sad-mad-resting b face expression that really isn't me. That is harder to take than the fine lines and brown spots. Wrinkles and laugh lines I earned...looking mad, I didn't really!

Oh well, I think I'm too chicken to really do anything about it, so I will have to live with it and try to smile all day to hide it!

I have total admiration and respect for anyone who can embrace their signs of aging, whatever they are. Some of mine don't bother me, but the jowls really do. I don't feel old enough to have them. But I'm not sure I want to spend the money or brave any kind of procedure to do something about them, so I may need to just learn to live with it.

I've used a hyaluronic acid cream along with a Vitamin C serum, twice daily, for almost five years now, along with nightly use of a Clarisonic brush. At 65, I have minimal wrinkling and my skin looks polished enough for me to forgo daily use of foundations and concealers. Yes, I do have lines that run from my nose to my mouth, a couple of vertical lines between my eyes on my forehead, and a few crinkles near the edges of my eyes and the corners of my mouth. A bit of illuminating cream for special occasions seems to "airbrush" those depressions so I don't get too bothered by them. The results of topical application of hyaluronic acid and Vit C are backed by some reputable studies so I'm comfortable using them. They aren't miracle workers, though, so if you are looking for a dramatic change you'd be disappointed.

Each to her own, but I'm with Angie that good skin care, a bit of makeup, and joining the Team Embrace the Jowls and Laugh Lines seems to be enough for now. My BFF, who is four years younger, has spent serious money (20 + grand) on fillers, BoTox injections, and laser treatments in the past three years. To my eye, some treatments have been moderately successful, while others either didn't last, or, even worse, ended up looking slightly odd. I think the skill of the practitioner really makes a difference and I'd be leery of making a choice based on price alone. To me, the difference between not enough, good, and too much is pretty narrow, but can make for some widely varying results.

My friend can afford to be picky about who she uses and can afford her treatments, so she absolutely has the right to do what she wants, but I think it is getting harder and harder for her to stop searching for the next product or treatment that will hold the signs of aging away. She is currently looking into treatments for her neck and hands. It's interesting that she doesn't think of these "treatments" as being in the same category as plastic surgery.

I believe Restalyne is Hyaluronic Acid. This can also be purchased OTC to apply topically and taken as a supplement. I think I would try it topically first to see if I have any reaction and if it makes any slight improvement over a few weeks. I've never had it injected but I've used natural products like this topically and as supplements most of my life and now in my fifties, I feel like it has paid off even though I've spent years in the sun without sunscreen for the most part (I don't use those type of chemicals). I read a loooooong time ago about Catherine Denueve using HA capsules I think. I wish I had started back then as I think it would have more profound results over many years.

I haven't used fillers but I do get Botox for migraines which is a foreign substance. I have 39 injections every 3 months in the face, head, neck. The question on whether you feel the substance? Yes and no. I feel that the area is fuller but it is not bothersome and that feeling goes away very quickly.
The question on whether the procedure is painful? Honestly yes it is. However, the injections on the facial area (between the brows, temples and upper hairline) are the least painful of the lot. It is over very quickly and there is no pain afterwards.

Thanks Lisa. Very informative. Wow - sounds like a reasonable price. If I remember correctly the pamphlet I received quoted 10x that price for some sort of package of 2 or 3 visits. Will have to do my research. I'm guilty of enjoying too much sun time and the damage is there, and cumulative.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread! I have no filler advice, Peri.

Jackie - no peely red mess at all ! I have tried Retinol a few times, and have always had to stop and back off and try again - to no real effect (speaking of red peely dry mess). The laser, depending on what you want it for , targets pigment and also encourages collagen production. The pigment zapping results in the spots being darker for a day or two, and then a very subtle sloughing off of the spots (which look like pepper scattered over that part of your skin). I'm not sure if you can tell from my photos, but I am ultra freckly, which I don't mind, but also have developed areas of sun damage (I tan very easily ) and aging. Those are what the laser finds and gets rid of. Absolutely no red mess or dryness. A bit of concealer for a few days is all you need. The collagen production part is slower, and cumulative, so it's not as noticeable....yet. None of this is at all invasive or as harsh as retinol. It's super expensive at a dermatologist, but I found a place through some referrals that charges by time, not by service, so I do 15 minutes at a time for $60. Worth every $.

Yeah, it hurts somewhat, but no more than getting any needle poked into your skin does. You get a rubber ball to squeeze at the same time and it all works out . I have also had Botox, but that was pretty ridiculous around the mouth area - could not spit out after brushing my teeth Cold laser ? I'm not sure I can explain it well enough - there is lots on-line to read. It's laser treatment of varying intensities that can take care of sun/age spots (higher freq) , and then encourage the development of collagen (lower frequency) . It's done wonders to my skin in only two treatments so far.

I had it done around the marionette lines. (Those vertical lines between nose and edges of mouth.) I had it done over the course of 2 treatments. That was 11 years ago. It has stayed filled out, so I never got it re-done, no need to. I cannot feel or see anything. However I will say that new, small wrinkles have formed in other places since the marionette lines are plumped out. I haven't done anything about them, they don't bother me. They might have happened anyway without the treatment. I recall the filler used was called Restalyne.

The procedure was not painful to me. But I am fairly tough about some kinds of pain. You see results immediately (as opposed to Botox which takes a week), but there will be some needle marks so don't have any special event planned for a few days.

Overall I found Botox, which I have done before, to be more painful.

ETA - once the injections were over there was no pain. It was only the injecting that hurt a bit.

Yep - I've had Juvederm fillers several/many times. Into the lines above my lips (you'd think I was a smoker given how pronounced they are) and in a few lines around my jaw/mouth area (mostly to use up what remained in the vial). And no , I am not aware of it being there other than visually. It's expensive though , and I'm not doing it currently as cold laser treatments are my new thing to do

A few years ago I talked to my dermatologist about a problem I call "leaking lips." Sometime saliva gathers in the corners of my mouth and causes irritation, chapping and even painful cracking. She told me that getting fillers for the deeper vertical wrinkles would help a lot. I did it and she was right. I only need it done twice a year.

Now I've got new crowns on my upper front teeth. Over the years the enamel has worn down, which causes the lips to kind of disappear--the volume of the teeth didn't support the upper lip. Behold, my upper lip returned. One of my front teeth has moved backwards and gotten squeezed, so she built out the crown for that tooth. Now I'm not so sure I need the filler. Or maybe I'll get it and have it put higher to fill in that deep wrinkle.

I have to look up the name of the filler she uses, but it comes with a painkiller in it. This isn't something you want to do the week before your best friend's wedding, or an important occasion. There is some swelling and redness for a week or so, but it isn't bad.

Certainly I'm not aware of something foreign in my face. I also get a bit of botox on the wrinkle at the bridge of my nose--they call it the rabbit something. I wish botox had been around in my 30s when this started.

Overall, it gives me a bit of a lift and a pleasanter expression all around. There is a bit of discomfort at the time, but I just take a half the minimum Xanax before my appointment and I am fine. (I'm not much of a Xanax user other than dentist, fillers, and long airplane flights when I get a bit claustrophobic.)
