The last couple times I tried to sell to ThredUp, I got the 'we're only taking donations' message as well. Previously, I had no problems selling to them but didn't get much $$ from it. These days I just donate to Goodwill. The margins are so small that unless you have particular brands you can't make much.

Thanks all! I have been donating to Vietnam Vets, but worry that perfectly good clothing is being recycled instead of re-used. And I always have the thought that I should sell rather than donate. But it sounds like
Since I don’t want to put much effort in, my best bet is to find a better place to donate.

For online sales, I prefer eBay. More customization than Poshmark, and less haggling/chatter. The returns on ThredUp are so low, I'd rather just donate at that point. I've had some luck with selling things through interest-specific Facebook groups too. If you have local consignment options, check those out. It's nice not to deal with packing and mailing, and to have someone else "warehouse" your items while you wait for them to sell. The shops near me take a 25-40% cut (varies depending on cash reimbursement vs store credit). I only sell online for like-new items or vintage items where I think I can get a higher price with access to a larger market.

I use thredup regularly. I agree they don't give you much $. It's very easy though. And I like that I can send my kids' outgrown clothes in the same box if there's something we're not passing on to other kids.
In their new model you can adjust the price of what you're selling.

I sent off a couple bags to thredup once, and the money trickled in. But then for a couple years, when ever I tried to send things in, they were only accepting donations.

My question is ... what are you looking for with selling? I looked into both Poshmark and ThredUP about a year ago.

Poshmark seemed more focused on getting you a good return, but you need to do more work to make that happen
ThredUP seemed to be more focused on just selling whatever you send, but you won’t get as much of a return.

I ended up taking my nicer things to Dress For Success, and then sending my more casual things to ThredUP. It’s an easy process, and I wasn’t trying to make money here, just trying to pass on responsibly. But I did manage to get enough credit from ThredUP to fund a new-to-me wardrobe pet last quarter, so that’s a bonus!

I like Poshmark's make an offer system. Thredup was a total waste of time. I think I made all of $20 and this included premium denim.

I have sold through ThredUP, Poshmark, RealReal, and ebay.

What I like about ThredUP is you can pack a bag or box full and mail it all at once - I don't like that with their new(ish) payout plan you get about a dollar per item, if that. I also like that if you change your mind about sending them an item, and it doesn't sell, you can have them send it back to you - similar to a brick and mortar consignment store.

Poshmark seems to have a younger audience, items can take a long time to sell, and you get a lot of low-ball offers. It can pay off, if you don't have an issue storing the items until they sell. The RealReal is good for selling high-end or designer pieces, if they are in great condition. Ebay is great for groups or "lots" of things (a "lot" of women's tops, or a "lot" of size 5T boy clothes, etc.), and popular trendy items. They also have international reach, which is great. I've sold to folks as far as Australia, and eBay handled the transaction seamlessly.
