take a piece of ribbon, loop through the beaded string and tie behind the neck. adjust the beaded strand to the correct length.

It all depends on how large the hole in the bead is. That type of beaded necklace usually has TINY holes and would be difficult to restring even with thin beading wire. The problem would be getting the crimp beads on the ends to stay crimped - thin wire is difficult to work with.

I like alaskagirl's idea of making your own, duplicating the colors with glass beads.

Those types of necklaces can't be re-strung, but sometimes you can make them shorter. You'd have to find the part where it is connected together. Most times it is wear there are two beds right close together, with no string between. It will be glued together or there may be a little piece of wire, metal stuck in both bead to hold them together. Pull it out, cut to desired length and stick the metal in the bead at the bottom or glue them together. Hope I explained that right. If you get a chance to take a picture of yours I could maybe help a little better.

Oh, if the beads seems melted together like the ones in the picture you've shown, just cut them out, cut to desired length and try melting two bead together with no string between. Heat with a lighter along one end of both beads and push them together and hold till they harden.

Okay, those I would not restring - too tedious to cut apart, and who knows if the holes will be intact. For $10, you could pick up glass beads in those colors and some beading wire (thin and flexible) and make your own, or if more ambitious, learn to knot on thread like pearls often are to get the spacing effect. Any bead store will show you how to attach a clasp if you want one, and with chain you can make it adjustable.

Here's a great site for jewelry findings and silver stuff: artbeads.com

Don't say we didn't warn you!

I say give it a go - especially if you're thinking of donating them anyway!!! I've seen people rebead necklaces at market stalls. It seems fiddly, but not superhard. Make it a project!!! A bead shop should be able to sort you out with supplies.

This is the type that has beads kind of stuck to the cord part of the necklace, so it's just not loose beads hanging around, all the beads are evenly spaced apart. Sorry the camera has gone on holidays without me otherwise I would show you some pics but they are kind of like the photo below.

Yes - I agree with AG. Post a pic and it will be easier to tell if its worth it or not. I'm like AG - a couple of years ago, I made my first trip to a bead shop - and wham! I was hooked! I LOVE messing with beads and trinkets and old earrings - and get great satisfaction in coming up with something original and cheap!

Can you post a picture of the beads? What are they strung on right now? I have shortened necklaces but often it's easier to just restring them. It is supereasy and I can give you a tutorial if you want to walk you through it. You can also add in other beads to get creative, or dangles, or a pendant... It's a whole world of accessories!

I make jewelry as a hobby, and I'm just warning you that once you set foot in a bead shop, you could be facing a whole new addiction. If you don't enjoy doing it, you may be better off donating, but I love remaking old junk into unique pieces.

Just curious if anyone has attempted shortening one of these - these are just cheap plastic beaded necklaces I brought a stack on E-Bay last year and havent worn them because I think they're the wrong length. Can it be done succesfully or should I just donate?
