I should have pointed out that I did not buy new hangers to add to what I already had. I am only using the new hangers, and am not using all of them at the moment. I just wanted thinner hangers, as my DD's formal dresses now occupy space in my closet because she doesn't have room in her closet.

I'm with others, I can only have as many items in my closet as I have current number of hangers. This helps me stick to a one in and one out strategy.

While I'm not actively limiting my hangers, I haven't in fact bought new ones in years. So yes, there is a de facto limitation. The only 'new' ones coming in are the metal ones from the dry cleaners'...and those are handy for drip-drying shirts!

No, I don't limit my hangers..but my husband does and it works very well for him. Though I am now doing the one in, one out. Or one in and one into storage ( my weight is all over the place so I am storing some things ). I find doing it by hangers just too arbitrary and impersonal for me , I know that sounds silly !!!

I don't need my hangers all the same color but I do like them all the same style. I like the huggable hangers. I don't do well if one hanger hangs lower than the others. It interferes with my quick scan of the closet.

Claire,

My Wal-Mart white plastic hangers were 97 cents for a pack of ten. Not expensive at all, and it was *great* to see everything hanging there at the same height, all lined up.

The new black velvety thin things are $7-something for a pack of 35 at Costco.

Not quite ready for the nice wooden hangers yet. I'll get there!

@VC I have seen your hanger plan in action and it really does work!

My closet is a mix of white plastic hangers and the freebies you get when you purchase something in a *real* store. I'd love to have them match, but it's more fun to spend my money on clothes right now! I refuse to purchase any more hangers, so I'm kind of doing the same thing you are Laura. If I bought another pack or two of plastic hangers, my closet would be stuffed before I knew it, and I like having a little breathing room.

I can't say I've kept myself to a set number of hangers, but I will say that what Mo suggests is a great idea!

I came across this when I was getting our last house ready for sale - read a few books on the topic, and one of the *easiest* things to spiff things up was to make sure that all closets in the house had the exact same colour/style hangers. At the time, I just went with white plastic tubular hangers from Wal-Mart, but it made my closets look so organized and beautiful! I replaced five closets and the front hall closet with matching hangers. Everything looked so neat and orderly. My husband and stepkids thought I was nuts - replacing every single hanger in the house with the exact same make/model of hanger. Thing is? Everything lined up nicely. The closets looked bigger than they really were. In fact, I got a comment from our realtor about this. Oh...and my house sold in *one day*.

Lately though, I've been buying those ultra-thin black velvety things. Closets are all mixed up again (re: hangers). I suppose this means I'm way overdue for a closet edit? Agghhh.....

Wow, that does make a difference, Mo! I've already gotten rid of all of the plastic tubular ones (well, I kept a few to hang drip-dry laundry on, but that's it). Right now most of mine are the swivel-hook clear plastic ones that they use in most stores, but I am thinking of switching to the flocked 'slim fit' hangers that they sell at BB&B. I like the look of wood but they're pricey and they take up so much space.

Yes, mine are limited. I have the the space saving ones for now because at one point I thought I needed more space. I had those plus plastic but I purged about 1/2 my stuff so I got rid of the plastic. Now I don't like the space saving ones with my edited closet because the clothes get pushed too close together and it's harder to see. I am planning to switch to wood within the next year.

Just some visual incentive in the argument for matching hangers. It makes it literally easier to *see* your clothes. The hangers just melt into the background.

jumble of colors vs.matching wood.

Great idea limiting the number of hangers! When I look in my closet, my wardrobe is tiny enough that I must have enough empty hangers at this point to last me the rest of my lifetime! I don't think I could even fill them.

Hadn't thought of that. Not a bad idea.

I like to shop in spurts. I'll be in hunting mode for a while, and then back off. I know it's time to go back into hunting mode when I'm having trouble putting outfits together before it's time to do laundry. And when my closet is still looking full when the baskets are also full, then it's time to back off.

Time to back off now... And yes, I'm running out of hangers.

Yes. I only wish I had wooden hangars, I have white plastic ones. But when they run out, it's time to purge! And I feel VERY virtuous when I have a pile unused.

Also, for my trousers, I like to use different colored hangers for black so I can distinguish them from navy. That little trick makes life so much simpler for me.

Yep! I finally got a matching set of 100 petite wooden hangers this spring, and did just that. I have 60 in my Tahoe closet and 20 in the coat closet. (I put the extra 20 under the bed in a box)
I brought 40 here with me to FL. Which makes sense, since I brought roughly half my wardrobe with me.

I just started buying new hangers and replacing my old ones so they all would match. It occurred to me that one way to decide how many clothes you would have would be to limit your hangers. You could decide to have x hangers for tops, x for dresses, etc., and if you bought something new you would have to eliminate something old. Has anyone done something like this?

I've done similar things in other areas of my life - I have a hard limit on number of books I own - if they don't fit on my current bookshelves I have to get rid of something. I cheat a little with a pile on my nightstand and library books, but generally it works pretty well. Every so often I go through and have a cull and resort everything, much like I do with my wardrobe, but my clothes seem to expand much quicker these days.
