Rae, I have all kinds of fabric in my Spoonflower cart but I haven't bought yet.
I love your cat print idea.
Here is another forum with more info on fabric design:

Thanks, Steph, I had thought of getting the swatches to figure out which fabric to use, but I hadn't thought of checking out my image on the fabrics. Great idea! I am relieved that you think the price looks about right. I am impressed that Spoonflower has a silk option.

I am hoping to get *all* my babies onto one print. Wearable photo album!

hi rae! ah, for a photo print spoonflower or sim. would be the way to go. I'd want to take advantage of the swatches to make sure you like how the photo comes across on your particular fabric. Are you thinking of a cat personally known to you? :)

"... I could make a dress for $60-$80. " sounds about right unless you're thinking of making a ballgown or something! that's what's nice about sewing for yourself, you can get a lot more for your money than buying retail. And i'm sure you've thought of this but if you make a muslin you can nail down the exact yardage and be much less likely to make any mistakes.

I hope you don't mind my living a little vicariously here keep us up to date if you take the plunge! steph

Hm, interesting, Anna. Looking at the prices per yard, it seems like I could make a dress for $60-$80. Admittedly, I don't have to worry about making a profit. Maybe I'm missing something, though; I'll look a little closer.

Jem, thank you!!

Steph, I'm going for photographic prints, but that shirt of yours is awesome!

I think economies of scale would make this very expensive. I remember reading that Mary KATRANTZOU said she'd only do two collections a year due to the expense and effort of making her prints.

Thank you Jem, pattern review is such an incredible resource (even if the site's a complete pain to navigate). It does sound very tempting but pretty expensive.

rae thanks for starting - i'll be interested in the feedback! you know, depending on how DIY you are and what type of effect you're going for, there's lots of info on stenciling out there. and if you combine various layers of designs and colors the effects can be quite soft and subtle (not just the typical hi-contrast hard-edged stencil stereotype). You can add embroidery, applique, studs, etc. if you like as well.

Here's a tee i stenciled over and embroidered Alabama Chanin style. I have no idea what end effect you're going for, but thought i'd toss the idea out there for you. Have fun - i'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! steph

I've been looking for the perfect cat prints and graphic prints for so long that I'm starting to think I'll never get exactly what I want unless I take matters into my own hands. I don't LOVE to sew, but I CAN, and all I want is a very basic shape, anyway.

Have any of you used Spoonflower or a similar company to make custom fabrics? How was your experience, if so?
