Not JCrew, but I laundered my Talbots merino wool sweaters in the washer, hand wash cycle, and I used shampoo as the cleaning fluid. I then aired dry on a sweater rack. Turned out perfect.

Lol, Gaylene, I ruined a Tippi sweater (also navy, as it happens) the exact same way last year. Mine shrunk so much that it was too tight around the armpits and thus unwearable. Luckily I had two navy ones!

Well, I'll tell you what NOT to do with your Tippi sweater--wash it in warm water in a regular load of jeans and T's, full agitation and spin, and dry in the dryer at medium heat for half an hour. The sweater survived but was no longer a fluid, drapey fit.

My navy Tippi inadvertently got mixed into a pile of casual clothes and the rest is history. I was aghast when I pulled it out of the dryer. The sweater still fit, in a shorter, more close-to-body way, which actually made it rather useful to wear under a blazer and tweed jacket, so all was not lost. And it was snapped up by my two-sizes smaller niece a few months later who was looking for a light-weight navy sweater for spring. On her, the sweater went back to being a nice, drapey fit.

For the record, all of my other Tippis are in fine shape after being laundered in cold water, on a delicate cycle, and with flat drying.

Hand or machine wash in gentle cold water and use a mesh bag if you have one, consider buying one anyway. Buy some Eucalan for your wools.
You can dry it flat and shape it.

Heretically I use a molded plastic suit hanger for my sweaters they dry better that way,but that might be too much for a newbie.

Great, thanks everyone! I'm feeling more confident about washing it. Maybe what I'll do is put it in a laundry bag and throw it in the washer on the 'handwash' cycle.

I did some google searching and I read that it's important not to rinse wool in a different temperature than what you wash it in, and also not to agitate it. But the handwash cycle is very gentle. And then you're supposed to roll it in a towel to squeeze the water out, which is what I do with other delicates. OK, here goes!

I have hand washed mine. Beware, the dye on darker colors may run. That has happened to me. If you wash in a machine do not put any other item in along with it!

I do not have any of the J Crew Tippi merino sweaters but I do have a few others such as icebreaker and I have tried both methods that have been mentioned here with no damage. I am not sure if this has any bearing on it but I have a J Crew Linen sweater that says Dry Clean only as well. I waged mine and then lightly pressed it and it is as good as new.

I have actually washed merino in the washer, on cold, in a delicates bag. Lay flat to dry. Never any problems. I've also washed in the sink without problems. I've also used Woolite, shampoo & dish detergent & found that they were all fine.

(Not J Crew - just other merino wool sweaters.)

About pilling - I just bought the Laundress Sweater Comb and it is fabulous and totally low tech. Works like a dream.

I always hand wash mine in tepid water and lay flat to dry. I've never had a problem with the sweaters shrinking, and no pilling from washing them either. No experience with the hand wash cycle in the washing machine though.

I have two J. Crew Tippi sweaters that are a fine-gauge merino knit. They are marked dry clean only. This is fine for the navy one, because I always wear it with a white collared shirt underneath, so it gets lots of wears before I need to take it in for dry cleaning. The silver one, however, looks better with nothing underneath, and since it's in direct contact with my skin, it needs cleaning more. Plus, it's silver, so the tiniest speck of any kind of stain shows up. I find myself not wearing it because I don't want to pay for frequent dry cleaning.

Has anyone ever hand washed a merino sweater? What happens? Does it shrink, or pill? I would hand wash in cold and lay flat to dry.
