I'd be interested in a review of this process, as I have a leather jacket I'd love to dye as well. Hope it turns out great!

Thanks Kate!

The dye I bought comes with wool daubers to apply it with. It's going to be a little tricky because they are boots and have some slouch so I'll need to be able to get into those folds. Shouldn't be too hard I hope.

I'm a little concerned about the stiffness. They're quite soft now. A belt is easier to flex than boots.

I wonder if I need the deglazer. They are not smooth shiny leather, so I don't think any kind of finish was added to them.

Hmm. Well, I have nothing to lose by trying since I don't wear them anyway.

I haven't but there is a how to video on it that looks reasonable: http://www.howcast.com/videos/.....ye-Leather

I like the idea of applying the dye with a cloth, as it will keep it from soaking into the cracks more than you want, and hopefully will give you a more more control over the finished product than just dipping the boots into a pool of dye.

Good luck, and take some before and after pictures so we can see how it goes!

I have not, and I unfortunately have no advice whatsoever. I've had one leather item re-dyed professionally, but that's about it. Sorry. But I admire your guts in taking this on! Good luck!

I just bought some leather dye to try and salvage a pair of orphan shoes that would be absolutely perfect if they weren't white. I figured I'd give dyeing them a try, and if they get ruined, oh well. I wasn't wearing them anyway.

Unfortunately I can't find any instructions or information on how to get the best results. The shoes are distressed with a sort of cracked finish so I'm not sure if that influences things. There is also hardware on them, but I don't think it matters since it won't absorb the dye, which should theoretically come off easily. I'm also not sure if I need to take the colors into consideration. They're white and I'm dying them black, which is quite an extreme jump, so I don't know if it would need more than one pass. I also don't know if I need to seal the dye with a protector. It's very annoying that it doesn't come with instructions or tips!
