Police officers and anyone else who carries a gun need to understand their subconscious biases and how they play out in officer involved shootings. *Justified* or not, IMHO racial bias is at play. This is not to say that I think I'm free from bias; I'm sure I'm not.

Interesting. Without giving the specifics, the result was that I had moderate bias but in fact I had to think about whether the final question was in the set-up. I think I got the result because I was neutral on the questions about whether I would like the individual. I figured I didn't know enough about the person to make that judgement and hadn't even considered the distinguishing characteristic. I might try another one.

Thanks for sharing this Una.

Although it was a different test, I remember once taking a test that asked a question about race. But the way the question was posed made met think of race as in dog races, car races, horse races, etc. Not quite understanding the question and thinking it might be alluding to gambling, I hesitated before answering. It wasn't until the results told me that I had "issues with race" that I realized what the question was asking. I realize how dense that sounds, but I really didn't read their question as asking about race as used toward people.

Anyway, I absolutely agree that EVERYONE has biases - some they recognize and some they don't, and some they recognize but refuse to admit. But sometimes people perceive even the questions differently from others.

Oh yes ! Malcolm Gladwell wrote about this in Blink. It is fascinating. Gladwell's results showed he had a slight bias against Blacks. He is Black - his mother is Jamaican. Thanks for posting. I am going to take the test.

What you say is so true. We get all kinds of messaging that builds into our neuronal pathways. It is amazing for me to see my children and their friends for example, and how they think about gay people. They don't. There is absolutely no distinction for them. None. Recently, my son had 7 boys over for a sleepover. They are 12-13. One boy brought his My Little Pony to cuddle at night. They each had an animal or blanket. The next morning, I walked in and they were all watching My Little Pony with this boy. They all hated it but were doing it because he liked it. Some liked Ninjas, others liked spongebob, one liked my little pony. It struck me that there just was no difference to them. I know that it is not like this everywhere, but it is becoming more like this.

Like it or not, my generation and where I lived pointed out differences : even if it was in "accepting".....so did my religion. For that matter I have never liked the word "tolerance". No one should have to be "tolerated". But I know that I have biases : both toward and against.

Have not read it. Read Blink though, and he refers to this kind of testing as well (I think - I read it a while ago). Thanks for the rec!

Thanks for sharing Una - fascinating.

Have you read Switch by C & D Heath? The book is about understanding how our minds really function (with the view to changing behaviour). I found it really interesting.

Wow Deb, you are the exception that proves the rule! I wish I could type out all the examples she had from studies. Resumes with only a name change (male/female, "Asian name/white name"), different jail sentences for similar offenders depending on how "Afrocentric" their features were, etc.

Una, this is so interesting. I took the survey and got this response. Only 6% of the survey takers got the same response as me.

'Your data suggest a slight association of Female with Science and Male with Liberal Arts compared to Male with Science and Female with Liberal Arts.'

Yes! And the interesting area is in the difference between what we think we believe or are willing to admit and our true reflexive responses. They showed that most people will claim positive bias toward Native Americans (social pressure to feel sympathy, guilt) but the implicit test shows actual negative bias (cartoons, stereotypes). And some biases have social permission to exist - weight being one. Fascinating stuff!

i've been in courses where we took these implicit bias tests. several african americans in the course found out that they too have implicit bias toward african americans, men in particular. it is really interesting how ingrained bias is.

one can also have an implicit bias TOWARD something.
