Aren't harem pants originally from India? This picture here (Pakistani harem pants) shows the pants with a fitted tunic. The emphasis is more on the overall effect of the outfit, especially the top, with the pants playing a supporting role. In the Western interpretation (especially your first link) my eye goes first to the drop crotch which immediately shortens the legs. Later, I found a pair of structured black harem pants that I LOVED (and, of course, bought them) - and I still love them.
