Congratulations on your exceptional closet of dresses!

Maneera, I wear fleece lined tights, knee boots, and underlayers (long sleeve thermal) in winter with dresses.

Thanks a lot Lyn, Ginger and Penny. I do have fleece lined tights, which is why I will dare to wear skirts & dresses this winter. In the past, non-thermal tights have not been enough to keep my legs warm. I'm hoping the fleece lined tights make all the difference!

I also own thermal skintight tshirts to layer underneath the dresses, and thigh length coats. In fact, I almost always wear thermal tshirts in winters, as I really have zero tolerance for cold. Mine are so warm that I can just wear a coat/jacket buttoned over them and skip the sweater on most days

And Ginger, I hate cold ears and love berets myself!!! I have them in all my favourite winter colors with matching woolen gloves to keep my hands warm too

Your tips have been most helpful, girls. I'm excited to wear dresses & skirts this winter! Thanks for showing me its possible, Penny!

Thanks, Maneera - I live in the DC area, so the winters aren't too bad. Tights with boots and a knee-length coat are warm enough for me most winter days, and I agree with Ginger that fleece-lined tights are great for very cold days. Hope you have an opportunity to wear more dresses this winter! I'm a big believer in wearing what you love

lyn67 had very great ideas; I do pretty much the same thing. I almost always layer my dresses, too; either a layering tee or turtleneck, or more rarely a sleeveless cuddle duds top if I'm planning on a topper or the dress itself is quite heavy. On my legs when a single layer of tights wasn't enough, I wear fleece-lined tights, or fleece-lined tights under leggings. Boots of some kind, and wool socks because they don't feel clammy. (I love the wool/silk Erin socks from Sock Dreams.) I've thrifted a couple of knitted wool/merino skirts that I wear under my dress on really cold days, like a petticoat. Often a pashmina-type scarf, especially if not wearing a turtleneck. Over that, a thigh-length puffer coat, gloves, and ear muffs or a beret (I hate cold ears). Works really well! I actually find dresses much easier to layer than separates; sleek underlayers don't move around much, and the dress glides over them.

Manny, you can always underlayer to a dress. I use to wear my sleeveless shift with a skintight almost sheer long black sleeve tee under, and then a jacket/cardi of various weights layered over, long flat riding boots, thick opaques(suggests doubling them or thermo if that cold) and the jocker is then a maxi puffer coat!:-) But my office is warm, and it's not so cold here to do it too often.

Your wardrobe is in such a happy place. Congratulations! It makes my heart sing to see someone else out there who loves dresses!

I adore dresses. They are my go-to for warmer weather, and I like to wear jeans for colder weather. I own a lot of pretty separates, yet I almost always feel my best in a dress. I am quite tempted to revamp my wardrobe to include mostly just dresses for next summer. I see that you can do it with ease, even though I work from home and have a very casual lifestyle. In any case, most of my casual dresses look great with ballet flats and flat sandals, so they do they for my casual lifestyle.

My question for you -- Can you tell me a little more about your climate? How do you style your dresses in winters? Is a jacket plus warm tights enough for you?

I ask because I'm quite keen on wearing dresses and skirts this winter, and want to know how to successfully do that without feeling cold. Our winters are cold but not very extreme.

Love your closet! Like Elly, I'm in somewhat of a building phase. I feel really content with my work wardrobe, but need more variety in my special occasion, lounge and casual wear clothes. I did a huge purge in the spring so now I'm very slowly filling in holes and trying to purchase more mindfully so I don't end up with a stuffed closet again.

I really like how many dresses you have in your wardrobe and am contemplating adding a lot more skirts/dresses to my own. That seems to be all I want to wear in the summer in Florida (not really a fan of myself in shorts) yet I always neglect to purchase more and then wonder why I'm bored with the same 5 options

Nice! Ha, I have to laugh. I think I now own fewer dresses than I ever have in my life, and that's ok. My lifestyle just doesn't require them, even though I always think I *should* own some magical do-everything casualdress that apparently does not exist.

I'm pretty happy with my wardrobe status too. I am considering a couple of things, mainly some refreshed additions to my thinned-out boot collection, but I'm quite happy with the variety in my closet these days. High five.

Very perceptive, Tracey and Elly. I do have a small number of blazers and cardigans, mostly because I find that I wear the same incredibly versatile ones (a collarless black blazer, a navy cashmere cardigan, and a black belted cardigan, all which live at the office) with virtually all of my work dresses, so I gradually gave away the ones I never wore. I'd certainly be open to adding to those capsules if the perfect items came along . . .

As to shoes and accessories, I have about 30 pairs of shoes right now, which includes work pumps, dressy pumps, sandals, wedges, ballet flats (my primary commuting / walking shoes), and boots for various weathers. And for accessories, I have a solid collection of the items that I wear the most: primarily stud / cluster earrings, bracelets, a work and a dressy watch, and a few necklaces (about 50 items in all, although during the work week, I'm just about always in my abstract silver stud earrings and a sculptural silver cuff). Although I'm always browsing for new items, and certainly open to adding / replacing, I try to remind myself that I'm in a good place as is.

Best of luck with your wardrobe building, Elly - that's an exciting time!

It sounds as though you are in a really good place. I also think that I might have a few more jackets-- but it also sounds like you've really sought out the sleeved dresses! How about shoes and accessories-- do you feel good there?

I'm in a slight building stage-- I have quite a few pieces to replace from last fall and hope to be able to do that and add a few pieces I've never had before within my budget. I think this will be nice since the first time in forever new pieces don't have to be one of my "main" workhorse, go-with-everything pieces since I have many of the basics covered. I'd like to get to the point where I feel like I can skip a load of laundry without issue and that I have more variety for various weather conditions. I want to add more sleeveless, light long sleeve, cropped pants, etc. as well as try jean alternatives. I like to have a balance of wovens, knits, and blouses.

I am impressed! You have enough dresses to wear in reasonable rotation without feeling too minimal. I find it intriguing that you have just 4 Blazers and 5 cardigans. I rely a lot on those completer pieces and would feel restricted by that number. I am impressed at that kind of restraint. Your happiness regarding this speaks volumes more than anything anyone else could say. Celebrate that!

Reflecting on Angie's post on the wear quotient of wardrobe items, I'm feeling pleased with the results of culling in various categories - it's been a long process, but very rewarding.

For my lifestyle and style preferences, I think my proportions are about right with 17 work dresses (which I wear year-round to the office, where I spend most of my time, with blazers / cardigans and tights in the winter), 10 spring / summer weekend dresses, 7 fall / winter weekend sleeved dresses, 4 formal dresses, and 5 occasion dresses (which I gladly wear as often as I can, even if just to dinner with my husband). I have just a handful of other categories of items: 4 blazers, 5 cardigans, 5 shells, 2 suits, 5 coats (various weights), 10 scarves, and a pair of jeans, in case the rare occasion arises where I can't wear a dress (that said, I haven't needed to wear them in years!) These items give me enough variety in my favorite colors while suiting my style goals of polished elegance for work, vintage / modern classic for the weekend, and sophisticated glamour for special occasions.

Although there are still a few more items that I'd like to add (perhaps one more sleeved dress for fall/winter weekends, and a second wool winter coat), I'm trying to think of these as items that my wardrobe could accommodate if the perfect pieces came along, rather than items that I must acquire.

Thoughts on whether you're where you want to be or how you'd like for your wardrobe to evolve?
