Great thread! I didn't know about St. David's Day and the daffodils. I just ran out to my back yard to check on my patch of daffodils--it's cold, rainy, and windy today in San Jose, CA. I found one little bud about to open--the rest will need a few more days.

What a lovely tradition. I have some vague memory of my parents mentioning daffodils and St. David's Day. They were from England but knew about these things. In Canada wearing a poppy on Remembrance Day is very common.

I'm an Irish dancer and I have to say the modern outfits aren't particularly traditional dress! More like rhinestone covered pageant dresses, heh. But on St Patrick's day I do wear a bit of green. My old dance group had traditional Irish costumes for some performances, too.

My neighborhood in San Francisco is mostly Mexican heritage and there are a few festivals where people wear traditional dress and especially indigenous Mexican folk costumes.

Happy St. David's Day! Most North American holidays get commemorated in some way by our family, but Easter and Christmas have a German flavour (my side) with a dose of Scots (DH's side.). I'm a fan of Canada Day, and wear red and white on that day. I also very much enjoy the Canadian Thanksgiving celebrated in October.

You have a lovely garden!

DH and I spent a charmed week in Cardiff the end of April 2010. (The year the Iceland volcano erupted - we were abroad!) The magnolia trees were in bloom and just incredible. We took rolls of pictures. When we moved from northern Ontario to Port Hope we discovered they do very well here. Last year to commemorate our 35th anniversary, we planted a Yellow Bird magnolia in front of our dining nook window.

What a fun post! Happy St. David's Day! Your garden is gorgeous (I'm smitten by that gazebo in the distance).

Re: other holidays that involve special dress, in Seattle there is a strong history of Scandinavian immigration and one neighborhood holds a Norwegian Constitution Day parade (Syttende Mai) where a lot of people wear traditional dress.

I like to wear a poppy of some sort on Nov 11, it is not really a tradition here in the US like it is in the UK but in addition to wanting to honor the sacrifices of service members I am sort of fascinated by the ecology of poppies & their role in literature/WWI poetry.

Torontogirl-you are beyond cute in that hat!It s a shame about the dancing I love seeing the little kids do Irish dancing.
Jane ,thank you.It s still snowing here so the dafffs are no longer visible!
Rachylou, we used to get the bumps on our birthdays at school.
Gigi, thank you I think it’s fairly traditional to partake of a Guinness or two on st Patrick’s day.
La Pedestrienne, thank you the garden is rapidly disappearing under the snow at the moment!
juecav,it’s amazing how local the snow can be isn’t it.My in laws are still in the Gower and didn’t have any snow at all when we last spoke to them late morning whereas Cardiff already had a few centimetres by then and it’s still snowing hard now.

Happy St. David's Day!

The responses to this thread have been extremely interesting. I love to hear what is going on all over the world!

Besides the usual Christian holidays, St. Patrick's Day is quite well celebrated on March 17 here in the US. A lot of people wear green, and some use the day as an excuse to get drunk, unfortunately. I usually wear my light green blazer on St. Paddy's Day because I don't have anything else green. (I'm of Irish descent.)

Happy St. David's Day!

Growing up, my proud Irish mom always had us wear green, white and gold ribbon pin thingys (sort of like a round ribbon brooch), if that makes sense) - she would never let us wear green, because that's how North Americans celebrate, not Irish people (don't even get her started on saying "top of the morning" or drinking green beer!) She did have us wear Aran-style tams also one year, to church on the closest Sunday, which I did not like because they were NOT cool. But in retrospect, it made us feel very special and very proud!

Happy St David Day! Your garden looks pretty - and the daffodils peeking out of snow in my garden wave to yours!

In Alsace, the part of France where I come from, some women and girls do wear the traditional costume (1st photo) for wine fairs and WW1-2 commemorations.
I also used to spend a lot of time in the German and Austrian alps, where wearing the traditional dirndl (2nd photo) is very common, especially for Oktoberfest and other traditional fairs.
Fun thing is, I own a (modern) dirndl but no traditional Alsatian costume as they are rare and rather expensive.

Yes. That is wonderful of YLF. You learn new things everyday. Beside religious holidays like Eastern, Pentecost, Ascension day, Christmas, we celebrate Kings Day ( used to be Queens Day), the whole country dressed in orange. Also May 5, Liberation day (ww2), but thats only a (paid) holiday every 5 years. We have discussions to change some of the holidays for other days because of a more diverse population now.

Hey! My second St David’s greetings! That’s a first! Lol.

We just had Valentines and Chinese New Year in the US and next up is St Patrick’s. Not particular to the US but the US celebrates them particularly. Being such a young country and of such an amalgamation of people, I rather feel as if they were self-consciously chosen for celebration en masse. With parades and everything. To acknowledge and share ethnic heritage. Anyways - green for St Paddy’s or you’ll get pinched! ;)

Oh right - and St Patrick’s covers not only the Irish but also the French and Italians... basically Catholics, lol.

Happy St David's Day!
Your garden looks beautiful in the snow, but that poor daffodil must have wished it hadn't poked its nose out quite so early.
Take care and stay warm in the face of Storm Emma.

Ooh thanks for reminder! I'm just deciding what to wear today.

My best friend in uni was of Welsh background so she told me about the leek (she didn't mention daffodils). She also said to wear something red on St David's Day. Is that not also the custom?

Today is the national St s day in Wales, dydd dewi sant ,and on St David’s day it is traditional to wear the national flower of Wales ,the daffodil, usually pinned to your lapel. The leek is an alternative but not many people do that as after a few hours you tend to smell ,well, shall we say ,pungent.
Children in primary school go in dressed in national costume but for adults unless you work in a folk museum, sporting a daffodil is the thing .Not everybody does it but it is still quite common to see here today.
The daffodil signifies the return of spring-and this year the first blizzard of the season!
I ve photographed my poor st David’s day daffodil in its pot this morning and as I don’t think I m going out today other than to throw a few snowballs,I think I ll leave it to bloom another day!
Anyway this got me to thinking,do you have any traditional items of dress that are still worn in your part of the world.?I think Christmas and Halloween are fairly universal these days but what about saints days and other celebrations?Do let me know ,I love the international flavour of YLF.
