My mom was from the rural of rural areas in south west Ireland, and my Dad's family were "Irish diaspora" in England, so I think Grandma and her Irish friends probably did it to stay connected to home. Mom grew up speaking Gaelic, but unfortunately we didn't learn much, just the odd phrase ... But most of my cousins in Ireland speak it. There's even a Gaelic school opening in cape Breton in Nova Scotia Canada. Women's Christmas, or Nollaig na mBan in Gaelic, is the day Irish women would traditionally take a day off their family duties and enjoy the last of the Christmas treats with female friends and community members, while the husbands and children took care of themselves for a day, as a reward for all their hard work over the holidays. My dad was sharing that my Grandma would even (gasp!!) enjoy a glass of sherry with her friends! But mostly they would enjoy tea, cake and conversation. A self care tradition before self care was cool.</p> <p>Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, I hope you can find some time to do something kind for yourself today!!
