His visit was very controversial. It wasn't just that Japan had been at war with Great Britain (and the US of course), and that Japan had committed horrible atrocities, but that he himself had been Emperor during WWll. It would be like having Stalin visit, I think. Anyway, it was fascinating seeing the tv coverage.
