If it is summer where you are, go for comfortable sandals. Try Crocs for slip ons with a big toe box. I do not recommend backless mule-
style footwear as one tends to walk out of it, especially on stairs, causing a falling hazard. I need slip on and off shoes and no heels or sandals. I also avoid shoe laces that need to be tied. Loafers and some old Me Too ballet flats are my best year round shoes. My sandals have been replaced with closed toe espedrilles. Fabric shoes seem cooler and let feet breathe. Good luck to you. Inside I wear slippers year round, They have grippy bottoms.

The OC sneakers that Nadya showed may work for you. Try to get supportive shoes with good, non-slippery soles.
You may already have this but a hip knee replacement kit is a good thing to have. It comes with a grabber and a long shoe horn, among other things.
Wishing you a continued, prompt and full recovery.

Slip on ballet Keds. I had to buy a second identical pair since I wore them so often they were almost falling apart because:
A: They’re black with white soles so they go with almost anything.
B: They’re dainty and sporty at the same time, so you can wear them with any type of causal item from skinny jeans to sundresses, miniskirts and even short shorts. Basically, all my wardrobe staples.

You might take a look at Sloggers garden clogs (and their other slip-on styles). I have a pair and love them for both indoors and out. They feel sturdy, safe etc. They don’t rub my instep which is a problem with some shoes.
Best wishes for your recovery and keep us posted but only when you are up for it!

Thanks so much for the feedback. I did ask the PT and OT and they weren’t sure. But another nurse said Sketchers were great. I went to order them but, alas, no credit card on me bc my purse it still 100 miles away. I will have to get my husband to order them for me.

I have trouble wearing Birkenstock type shoes without socks bc I have a high instep that gets rubbed wrong although I might be able to use moleskin. Putting on socks is a no go. I read a review that the Kizik should be worn with socks but that was only 1 review. I have OC sneakers but can’t bend down to tie them.

It has been a rough couple of days so I haven’t commented much but hope to contribute more in the future.

I have a somewhat wide ball of my foot and these are my favorite sneakers. I can put them on with bending. My find is older so I added the find for the cream pair which is the current version, there are lots of colors!

My MIL has wide feet and also needs to avoid bending and has been very happy with Kiziks, which Murph mentioned. There might be more variety if you buy direct https://kizik.com

My Sketchers are the same size as my walking/athletic shoe size. Also found the heel design worked well for my narrow heels—no slipping which is often an issue for me with most slip-ins.

Would Birkenstok work? I need shoes to slip on w/o using my hands and have relied on Birkenstok for years. The leather used for the uppers stays in shape/ does not collapse so I can slip my foot in while standing...

I have a strange problem, an autoimmune disease that attacks my feet. I have slip-on skechers (wide) and have bought shoes on Amazon doing a search on ‘diabetic shoes’… which offers shoes with wider, higher toe-boxes.

I personally avoid crocs now, because the little round logo button insert caused me huge problems.

First - I hope you are healing and that your recovery goes well.

Just a thought as an alternative to slip-ons:
I had lumbar spinal fusion last year and could not bend over. I already had sneakers (Abeo) that I used for PT before surgery. They are supportive and sturdy. The therapy team at my post-op rehab hospital switched out the regular laces for elastic laces and pre-tied them. My husband got me an extended length shoe horn (from Amazon I think). This combo has worked well for me. I have weakness in one leg so my shoes have to fit securely.

Good luck!

This brand patented the no hands shoe, the insoles are machine washable, so yes can be worn without socks. I believe that Nike was using there technology when they introduced their hands free/inclusive shoe

I should add, this is more than a slip on shoe, this is a shoe that is designed specifically for people with difficulty putting on shoes either with their hands or because they have limitations bending over

Welcome to the forum and I am so sorry to hear of your accident. That sounds dreadful.

The first thing that occurred to me, actually, was Crocs. Not fashionable, exactly (well, they were trending a while back, but...) but just for ease and wide toe box and comfort, and they do come with a back strap. But that might be too fiddly right now, and a slip on shoe with good support might work better, like the Skechers Gaylene recommends.

Do you have a brand of sneaker/ running shoe that was a go-to for you before? If so, you might check to see if they make a slip on version -- some do.

The Ecco 7 is very popular and comes in a slip on version, I believe.

The other shoe that people adore is the Ilse Jacobsen flat. https://www.ilsejacobsen.com/c.....ulip-flats

I tried them on and there was not enough support for my foot, and my heels slipped out. But most people do not have that issue.

Thanks so much. Just finished PT so exhausted so excuse my briefness. I think one of the sneakers would be better than a backless sandal bc I am worried about my foot sliding. I am in Pacific Northwest so we are getting pretty warm here. I don’t think I will be walking if it rains. I just got a grabber but need to practice. Since I am in a SNF right now people are helping me dress and put shoes and socks on. I am not supposed to bend at waist - I have this huge back brace I have to wear to keep back straight and not bending.

I will order some Skechers to try. Sounds like a good solution. Again, thanks.

Correct me if I am wrong , but I interpret this to mean footwear you can shove feet into while standing. A slip on shoe without laces, or a sandal without a back.
The first is kind of a HEWI for me because I find most often the heel mashes down or folds. But I did have luck with a type of Nike slipon ( I know you are leery of brand) and with a Freely slipon sneaker, and with some heavier winter indoor- outdoor slippers, Minnetonka. It takes a very firm heel cup plus some degree of serendipity plus sizing up.

I don’t see how you could nail such a product in one shot — hopefully someone can bring you a few pairs to try out & be returnable.

I am not sure you mean a backless sandal because of lack of support for rehab walking, but if that’s an option, there are Fabbers who have trialed many types of slides.

If you have some mobility at the waist, you might find one of those long/ handled shoehorns. Also if you don’t have one yet, obtain a lightweight “ black grabber” for picking things up.

I recently had a serious accident and will need a shoe that I can use hands free. Socks are difficult to put on so shoes that are comfortable without socks are best. Basically, I cannot bend at waist for a while. It is very important that I start walking (with walker) as much as I can handle once I get out of rehab (maybe another 8 days at earliest). Does anyone have any recommendations? I do have a wide toe box so Nike’s are not an option. A sneaker or walking sandal would probably be best.

I only recently became active on YLF and then had the accident so I have not put much info in about myself. Once I am off pain meds i will be able to communicate better.
