I remember their sales Steph, but I guess since they just released a new collection, it will be a while before anything goes on sale. I'll keep checking back! I'll try Sisley and LC too. Thanks!

Hi Mayapple. I stopped purchasing leather, suede and animal products in the past year and I completely hear you on it not being as fun to shop for purses anymore. (Although I find purses SO much easier than shoes!!) I know you mentioned that Mat and Nat were out of your price range, and I just wanted to encourage you to go back to their website periodically and check for their sales. They usually list their sale merchandise as "promotional," and the prices are SIGNIFICANTLY lower (like, half price or more). Right now it doesn't look like they have anything on promotion--they did about a month ago. So maybe check back in a month or two.

Another place I have had luck--Sisley has some cute purses and they all seem to be fake leather and inexpensive. And I recently got a really cute Liz Claiborne purse, completely faux, at Filene's Basement for half price!

I remember that post fondly and actually did a search for it while hunting down a good bag. I love the red Ipa Nima tote, but it's not even close to what I'm looking for. Matt and Nat have some gorgeous bags this season but they're way out of my price range. Maybe I'll continue to just wear my unseasonal floral canvas Marimekko bag until I've saved enough pennies for something better.

My favorite color is a dark, rich red...but since so many of my clothes are already that color I thought a contrasting color bag would be best.

I just wear my huge black tote to class, but once the weekend comes around I have no idea what to wear. Lately bags either seem to be oversized totes or teeny tiny clutches.

Such super answers to Mayapple's question. You are ALL right. I leave my wicker bags for Summer, but am not deterred by colour at all. I’ll sport a yellow bag when it’s snowing and black one when it’s sweltering. The handbag has to match your outfit. A huge black leather tote is not going to look great with a delicate flowing dress. Synthetic and patent are year round fabrications in my book.

What’s your favourite color Mayapple?

I don't think patent (whether real leather or synthetic) is a wintery material. I do think suede and pebbled leather as wintery though. I agree with Steph in that the fabric has to be right for the season. I have a boiled wool handbag that my MIL knitted (and boiled) for me. But I have a small black patent purse that I carry year round.

haha, ironically it was my mom who said it. she is probably around the same age as your mom :)

I need a good everyday purse with fun details but since I don't wear leather it makes it quite difficult to find a bag that works year round, since most are canvas or fabric. Synthetic bags just don't seem to be as fun for some reason.

Who ever said synthetic patent was a winter material? I think you could carry it any time of the year. My mom would disagree, but then she's of the generation where your purse must match your shoes and be black or brown in fall and winter and white in spring and summer. I wouldn't carry a purse that's a very light material in pastel green all year, but if it were in patent I might pull it out in the middle of the winter.

hmm, I guess since I don't wear leather bags it's harder for me to look at it that way. I have a giant synthetic patent black tote bag that I use for lugging my stuff to and from class and I'd hate to have to give it up come summer just because of the material or color, so I was wondering if it's truly hideous of me to do it. I don't want to have to get another bag just because of the season.

I agree with Steph. From what I've read on Angie's blog seasonal clothing (which would seem to include accessories like handbags) really has more to do with fabric than just color. Now I need to get myself more than one purse.

I agree with you about colors, but I do draw a line with fabrics. For example, I have an off-white cotton poplin purse with red trim and I can't wear that in the winter--the fabric just doesn't fit. I also have a really dark brown, very "tough" suede purse that I wouldn't use in the spring or summer. I also have a heavy grey tweed that I only use in winter.

I don't think there is anything wrong with wearing a white bag in mid-January, though.

Do you categorize your purses by season? For me, it's in the same category as other fashion myths like matching handbags to shoes and not wearing black and brown together. I enjoy a pop of summery color when it's dreary and cold outside, and likewise I like a cooler look when it's hot outside. It's refreshing and unexpected. I feel like it's mostly older women who are concerned with it, but that just may be my experience. I just find it confining to let the season dictate what I wear more than it already does, and, unlike wearing clothes that don't fit or flatter, wearing a white bag in mid-January is hardly going to cause snickers and whispers.
