I'm not a big handbag person. I do like them and enjoy all the different leather colors and textures but have trouble getting really fired up about it. I have Tignanello bags! Ideally I'd be a minimalist with a few neutrals in some "great" bags. I also have trouble with the mantra that we're judged by our handbag choices. I don't spend a big % of my time WITH my bag, so that may be part of it.

Well it all dépends on your budget. But if you are going for class and carrying capacity, I would go for a MacDouglas. The brand and style are unmistakable, and they are quite versatile in terms of style... I would go for something in either black or cognac, or go trendy like a bright orange! These are long lasting handbags that haven't sold out... I mean, who really wants a Coach bag anymore?

As everybody knows that handbags
play a very important role in every woman's life. I am crazy about handbags.
Last month, I purchased my handbags from Iris Atsin. They provided me very nice
bags. I just love it.

I like to have one neutral for spring/summer and one neutral for fall/winter and then a few others I can use just once in a while like a formal one, a very small one for active days, etc.

For me a small satchel with an added long strap (convertible) is a must so I can give my shoulder a break when it gets tired or be hands free when I need to be. A zip top is also key for me and I can't stand the double zip tops with two separate compartments because it drives me mad trying to remember which "side" my keys or my wallet or whatever is on. I also require at least one exterior slip or zip pocket so I can slide in mail to go to the post office or anything I want to be sure I see and don't forget to handle.

Colors I prefer do typically either go with or are in line with my hair color and wardrobe. I like belts that way too for the most versatility. The ones I tend to reach for are ivory, tan, warm gray, light snake, and pewter - which all go with my light hair. But if you love color you may want a pop of color for your handbag of course. I also love navy/ink for handbags but ended up with a subtle color blocked taupe/gray bag for this season.

Suz - yes YLF is enlightening me! I can totally see what Angie says that to elevate your look you should invest in quality shoes and bags. I don't see that one bag is going to do it so to your point a collection of bags is needed. EEE Gad - I'm already cringing at the price of some of these bags!

It seems there are shoe people and bag people. I have never been a bag person and always carried a single one per season until YLF -- it was all about practicality. But I'm now creating a small collection per season. Like Diana, I have my requirements and my deal breakers for bags -- and apart from that, I look for one versatile neutral, one fun colour or texture, and one colourblocked bag per season. (Or more). :)

abc - I agree with you on choosing on size and functionality - I'm all about practical. I'm leaning toward medium size and maybe a hobo type. I'm just not sure of the color. I have looked at the finds - I need do that again - thanks for the reminder.

Michelle - Minimalist! Yes! That sounds better than clueless or cheap. Snakeskin - I LOVE snakeskin! That would up my overall neutral look. Hmmm...you've got me rethinking my hobo idea. That bag is seriously cute - darn it's sold out :(

Dee -A bag person! We need to talk! I have so much to learn about bags. I've just seen them as functional to carry stuff, throw on the back of a chair or plop on the floor. Now shoes, I love but why don't I have this love of handbags like it seems most women?

Diana - good idea to list what criteria a bag must have. I agree with a zipper but often I don't zip mine (too lazy) but it would be nice to have some assurance my stuff doesn't fall out.

Lynne - I don't know Brenda Kinsell but I googled her. Thanks for sharing! Shiny hair color - interesting.....I like it.

Brenda Kinsell suggests getting one bag in a shiny/sparkly/texturized version of your own hair or eye colour. I already owned my patent taupe work bag when I read this and it made a lot of sense to me; the bag works with just about everything and it IS a shiny version of my hair colour.

Just throwing this in for thought :).

Have fun shopping. I hope, for your wallets sake, that your DS passes his drivers licence sooner rather than later...

For me, I have a list of non-nogotiables/dealbreakers for handbags (excluding special occasion bags which are a different beast altogether). They are:
--must be hands free, preferably a shoulder bag style. So, no satchels or clutches. Also, I make sure the bag will fit on my shoulder with my coat on. This is important as a coat can add enough bulk that sometimes a bag that fits a bare shoulder won't go easily over a coat.
--must have a full zip closure. This eliminates probably 75% of options.
--relatively lightweight when empty.
--fits my everyday stuff (I bring lunch every day to work so the bag must fit my lunch bag inside) but not be so huge and overwhelming.

Then I try to stick within my price range, and I consider aesthetics such as color, shape, etc, and comfort. Sometimes I'll carry an option around the store on my shoulder for a while to see if it feels good.

I also try to pick something that will go with most of my wardrobe. Although I have multiple bags I am lazy and don't swap them out too often. I certainly don't change my bag everyday to match my outfit.

When choosing a handbag, do you want hands-free or do you mine carrying it around? Long strap or short? That can help you decide whether you want a crossbody, clutch, tote, satchel, etc.

In terms of quality, leather lasts longer, but some of the recent faux-leather bags actually hold up quite well. I'm willing to pay a bit more for a bag that will last vs fast fashion, but you can find some nice ones at mid price points, especially with sales.

What colors are in your wardrobe? If you wear a lot of neutrals, sometimes a colored handbag gives a nice pop to an outfit. On the other hand, if you wear a lot of brights, a neutral bag will tone it down. Metallic is fun and goes with everything!

Can you tell I'm a bag person?

You sound like a handbag minimalist, just as I am. I tend to get a couple of bags and use them all season. My favourite way to do neutral bags is to get something in a snakeskin. It keeps things interesting yet versatile. This season, though, I changed it up and went with a daytime foldover cclutch. I'm astonished how much I love it. Not all clutches are made to be impractical! This one fits the entire ccontents of my larger bag and still folds over into a sleak, trendy little package. Yes I got black, but I picked one with additional details like the gold polka dots and subtle burgundy piping. I don't think I'd be satisfied with a utilitarian plain Jane purse, but handbags with high versatility really do make me feel better about my overall style.

http://www.shopbop.com/jane-ma.....2617611-SkYour reply

I've been hanging out at the mall recently waiting for my DS to finish Drivers Ed class. The schools here no longer teach Drivers Ed as part of the curriculum so we have to sign them up for private lessons - at locations we choose. The class is right by the mall - gasp! -how did that happen - wink wink. Well, turns out this driving thing is costing me a lot of money! In a brief buying "sequester", I sat in a chair in the middle of the mall to "people watch". Turns out everyone - I mean EVERYONE has a nicer handbag than I do! Seriously- there are some frumpy dumpy women in sweat pants carrying a really nice designer handbag. I am so embarrassed by my Nordstrom Rack Tagnanello purse from 3 years ago - or maybe it was 5 years ago - I apparently haven't been paying attention. It was all I could do but try an hide my pitiful purse (oops handbag) in shame. Oh the agony! How did I miss this trend? What have I been doing with my time? What rock have I been hiding under?
How to I rectify this? How do I determine my ideal purse (gack handbag)? How much should I pay? What color? Soooo many variables!
