My hands become a mess very quickly, though I have found moving to a hot climate has helped, LOL!
The best thing I have found is L'Occitane Shea butter hand cream, lovely to use and stops the cracks and bleeding.

I also have hands that get so dry that they crack in the winter when it is cold and am allergic to most scents. I have tried a lot of products over the years and finally found Kiehls ultimate hand salve.

http://www.kiehls.ca/Ultimate-.....038;q=hand

This stuff is amazing. My hands feel instantly better and it lasts. I recommended it to a friend for her daughter who had fairly severe eczema and she also uses it now.

I bought a pair of the heated mitts that are used by spas and skin care salons and thin cotton mitts. I slather thick cream on my hands and put them in the heated mitt/muff things for half an hour or more a few times a week too and the heat helps the cream to soak in deeply. Huge help.

I have very sensitive skin. I've tried all of the products listed above over the years (except Weleda) and when my skin is in an inflammation state, they are all not helpful.

Four things work for me:
1) Removing sources of skin irritation;
2) Cotton gloves over a heavy moisturizer at night to heal the intense dryness;
3) A lighter moisturizer during the day to maintain a base level of skin moisture throughout the day;
4) And finally, adding moisture internally to help it all out.

First I avoid things that I know irritate my skin, including lanolin, and latex, and I also know to avoid anything with petroleum-based ingredients:

Sodium myreth sulfate

Paraffin Wax

Mineral Oil

toluene

Benzene

Phenoxyethanol

Anything with PEG (polyethylene glycol)

Anything ending in ‘eth’ indicates that it required ethylene oxide (a petrochemical) to produce e.g. myreth, oleth, laureth, ceteareth

Anything with DEA (diethanolamine) or MEA (ethanolamine)

Butanol and any word with ‘butyl’ – butyl alcohol, butylparaben, butylene glycol

Ethanol and word with ‘ethyl’ – ethyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, ethylene dichloride, EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetracetatic acid), ethylhexylglycerin

Any word with “propyl” – isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, propyl alcohol, cocamidopropyl betaine

Methanol and any word with ‘methyl’ – methyl alcohol, methylparaben, methylcellulose

Parfum or fragrance – 95% of chemicals used in fragrance are from petroleum

Most commercial hand soaps and dish soaps are petroleum based and you may be inadvertently irritating your skin by just washing your hands. Hand sanitizers can also exacerbate the dryness problem and they often sting when you have dry skin too. :(

Switch to using warm rather than hot
water to wash your hands. It might also be helpful to wear gloves to avoid as much
hand washing (especially when washing dishes or handling something like
raw meat that would require washing with hot water afterwards), when you wash your hair in the shower, or when you do dishes by hand. Make
sure latex is not an irritant, too. If your gloves have powder in them, put moisturizer on before you put on the gloves. It may feel sweaty at first, but your skin will be soft, not dried out when you take the gloves off. Wear warm gloves every time you go outside into wind or cold, even if it makes it inconvenient to do things with your hands. I wear driving gloves in my car in the winter until the car warms up and a thicker pair for outside.

A heavy moisturizer with cotton gloves at night is key in protecting and revitalizing your skin, and then you can use the non-greasy moisturizer during the day. You can use several things with the cotton gloves, which you put on before you go to bed, then take off in the morning. You may be sensitive enough that Vaseline, which is a petroleum bi-product may irritate your skin too. You can try raw honey (look for a label that says raw or uncooked) first, as it is antibiotic and will take care of any underlying infection or bacteria that may have gotten into your broken skin, it soothes cracked and flaking skin, and it softened and moistens. Initially it is sticky, but it forms a kind of soft shell around your skin after it gets melty from your body heat, and then it goes to work. You can also try food grade coconut oil. If you want to put the coconut oil in a warm place so that it is liquid rather than hard, you can pour a bit into your palm and add a couple of drops of pure lavender essential oil (not an imitation, the real thing), which helps skin heal and will also act to fight off any bacteria that may be in your cracked skin. I offer those first, because they are only one (or two ingredients) and you will know immediately if they help or not. If you are looking for a brand name product, I like Badger Baby Balm (I get it at Whole Foods Market, but I've seen it in the natural section of other stores, too). It has chamomile and calendula to calm irritated skin and forms a protective layer while it soaks in overnight.

I tried a lot of daytime moisturizers before I landed on Shikai Borage Therapy Dry Skin Lotion. I get the unscented. There is specifically a hand cream by them too, which you might prefer because it is lighter, but I like the heavier one named above, which doesn't stay greasy for long after you rub it in. I've seen it at the Bartell's in my area as well as Whole Foods and Fred Myer.

You might want to consider adding fish oil or flax oil as capsules or in liquid form to your diet if you have dry skin in general. Or just make sure you are getting enough healthy fats in your diet and drinking plenty of water to help your body protect your skin.

Hope that helps!

More love for Waleda Skin Food here. I find it at Target or Whole Food.
In the winter, I mix it with my moisturizer, Atopalm, and use on my face. It's heavy, but mixes well.
Yes, my skin is horribly dry!

Good luck!

During the daytime I use Aveda hand cream as it absorbs so well. For nighttime I also use Nivea cream (blue tin). I get the German version online from GermanShop24. I may be imagining it, but it seems different from the version available in the U.S. (which is made in Mexico). I also use the Nivea cream on my face at night in the winter.

I had the same problem. Physicians wash their Hands all the time, even shrinks, especially if you work in schools. The dermatologist recommended Cerave cream. It's over the counter and does not feel greasy. I love it so much that I use their daily moisturizer with SPF also. Because you have cracks, you may also need a steroid cream like the triamcinolone mentioned earlier for eczema. I believe that is technically what it's called if your hands get to that stage. I wouldn't use an over the counter steroid cream for this. See your doctor. I also wouldn't put a steroid cream on your face unless your doctor recommended. I believe it can cause discoloration.

You can also try natural and organic
products to hydrate your skin. Use products that have Vitamin E. Coconut oil

Oh, yes - I forgot to add what Lisa said. L'Occitane's pure shea butter is pure wonderfulness. It's not as moisturizing for repairing really hardcore patches of dryness like the Triamcinolone cream is, but it's very versatile. I usually carry a miniature tin around in my purse to use on everything from eczema patches to my lips, or even smoothing flyaways in my hair. Great stuff!

(I'm avidly reading the rest of this thread for suggestions for the less intensive body lotions. I really need to pick up some Nivea. As a lifelong oily-skinned girl turned combination skinned, I've only ever needed to moisturize in patches... until this winter, when the climate turned cold and dry, and my body became an itchy, flaky mess.)

Neem oil is an incredibly nourishing...but stinky!...oil that helps dry skin. You should mix it with other oils, don't put it directly on your skin. Or you can mix a tiny bit with another lotion you like. It costs about 8 dollars for a little bottle. Here's a page about it: http://www.discoverneem.com/ma.....ampoo.html

I have the same problem along with split skin near the fingernails and shea butter works for me. I don't if you are vegetarian, but if you are, then upping your intake of omega-3s should help.

My grandmother used Nivea all her life. She would have a ginormous tin can sitting on her vanity and would apply it not only to her hands but to her face as well liberally. She had beautiful skin and always smelled like Nivea cream. We just lost her this summer. Nivea cream brings back wonderful memories of her.

I have dry skin too. I used to also work in a medical research lab where I wore powdered latex gloves and washed my hands every 5 seconds it seemed - my hands were always bleeding. One of the doctors suggested I slather on Vaseline or Bag Balm, put my hands in cotton socks and sleep like that. ( That was 28 years ago ! ) I also do it to my feet now. It works well for me. I do it as a maintenance thing in the Winter. I also really like Burt's Bees Mama Bee Oil. Again, I slather it on and put on cotton socks. I have also found that if I layer on a lighter moisturizer several times it controls it better ( tip from Cindy Crawford.....). So I put Clinique's yellow moisturizer, I forget the name, on my hands and face several times a day. I will also put it on first, wait for it to sink in then use a heavier cream/Bag Balm. I also use the Clinique before putting on my gloves. I am sure there are other moisturizers, and I have tried alot, but in the winter, the Clinique suits me well as a "base" to my heavier creams.

(Now if I could do the same to my face with Vaseline or Bag Balm, without suffocating . )

Hi Steph, I've just checked and Weleda have US site as well. Check Skin food here. I'm guessing some better health food shops may even have them on the shelves, so you might ask the SAs for the advice.

I think it's worth goiving Aqueous cream a chance as well, it has high white paraffin content and is very cheap, so not much harm if it does not work. Any pharmacy here sells them, I'm guessing it should be similar in the US.

Thanks so much everyone! Kari, thanks for the name of the cream I should mention to the derm! In the meantime, I might have to go out and get some of that Weleda (thanks Ellie--I had never heard of it before). Unfortunately, the popular Nivea contains lanolin, so I should stay away from it. If I have trouble finding the Weleda, I might get the Neutrogena, but it contains an ingredient that isn't lanolin, but often stimulates a reaction in people allergic to lanolin. Sigh. I think I should be fine with it, since my lanolin allergy is mild (at most--when I was tested it was the only thing that came back as positive, and even then the reaction was not at all severe).

I was in a rush to finish my previous post, hence the links to the products I have mentioned are coming only now:

Nivea
Weleda Skin Food
Weleda Sea Buckthorn

Becky, when using Neutrgena why not start with a tiny dab, I find that's enough to give me a good protection and then there's no need for rubbing it in for too long?

Angie, I'm guessing the Nivea behind the link I posted is the one you too use? I am all for not fixing something that works, but if you ever come across Skin Food, that's the only product worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder (or near) to Nivea because there are no nasty chemicals in it and it has all the qualities of a good all-rounder cream.

I use Nivea for my hands - the cream which comes in a round little blue tin, not the lotion. Keep it in my bag 24/7. I have fine sensitive skin that flares up in rashes when I am stressed. This is the *only* cream I will use on my hands. But skin types are different

I also use the Neutrogena bella linked to. It has a heavy feeling, and takes a lot of rubbing to get it worked in, but isn't greasy at all.

Steph, that is very familiar, I've started getting those after having my son and consequently washing my hands a lot more often than before. Those cuts are painful and take days to heal, it's just not fun.

I found that the simplest emollients with a lot of white paraffin do the job best. You can apply them as often as you want. Not greasy.

Neutrogena is probably the best mass market hand cream. Little goes a long way.

The best general creams is Nivea (my ultimate all rounder - the one in the blue tub, not all those specialized hand creams as such by this brand). The best is to apply it overnight, then wrap your hands in cotton gloves or old socks.

Lately, I've discovered another all-rounder by Weleda, called Skin Food . Organic, all natural ingredients, just lovely. The same brand has specialized hand-cream by sea buckthorn which is lovely as well.

I've tried all sorts of fancy stuff as well, the best from the higher end of the market for me was 8 hour by Elizabeth Arden, but the cheaper creams I mentioned above do the job much better actually, and I think 8 hour has lanolin in it, so probably best to stay away.

I find that my skin gets better when I start paying attention to adding flaxseed to my diet, also I add aloe vera to my fruit smoothies. Once I start skipping them, it shows on my skin.

To help matters, sorry if this is obvious but I need to remind myself quite often - always wear gloves when doing housework and always check that the product does not have any perfume in it - that may be the cause for the rashes you mention from Bliss.

Yes. If your hands are so bad that they are chapping and cracking open, I would highly recommend asking your doctor for a prescription of triamcinolone cream. It's not cheap, but one tube lasts for a long time, and it is both creamy, non-greasy, and an anti-inflammatory. When my eczema starts flaring up on my hands & body, or if I have a severely chapped nose after having a cold, this is what I use. It's too heavy to use all over your body, but for really severe dryness in patches with sensitive skin, it's the best thing I have found.

Good luck, Steph - I hope that your skin heals up soon!

My skin is always dry, but now that winter is here my hands are really suffering. I actually have cuts on my knuckles from skin dryness. The problem is that my skin is also sensitive (and I'm mildly allergic to lanolin), and I hate hand cream that feels greasy. I used to love Bliss' hand cream, but I have been getting some red rashes on my hands from it recently. Does anyone have any suggestions?
