Elly, I had one altered to take in the waist only, so it wouldn't sit too low. I think that sounds like what you have planned.

I had mine done at Nordstroms - where they should be very familiar with the skirt - and it came back with a pucker in one side seam a few inches down from the waist - probably where the alteration met the original seam. I brought it back, their tailor said the fabric had probably stretched during stitching, so they did alteration #2 at no extra charge and it turned out fine.

The original coast was $20.

Hope that info helps!

Elly, I had to have my yellow raisin 2P altered around the waist as I was really a 0P and bought my cobalt blue in the 0P, which was a better fit.

Since I love the yellow Halogen, I had to have it altered as it just seemed loose. My tailor did a great job and yet I'm not sure what she charged as I had one skirt hem lowered, and some pants hems lowered, too, and the total was $80. I would think $15-$20 may be in the ballpark.

Elly I found this old thread while searching for information on whether anyone had enlarged their pencil skirt. I did successfully have one taken in by the Nordstrom tailor who charged $15 (but it became part of my annual allotted tailoring budget tied to my Nordstrom card so essentially free to me). It came out beautifully. I think Una has had it done as well. As an apple I needed the bigger size in waist but had them taper it more from hips to hem (both sides) I found one in a smaller size for $10 at the rack last night and am debating if it's worth having it let out a little (even if it can be done) Does anyone know?

Elly, as far as i know this skirt is easy to alter because:
- lining is not attached in the seams - can be lifter over;
- there is no waistband so it can be just taken in in the sides.

I cannot say about the prices as my mom did it for me so I hope other will chime in on this..
Good luck!

I am an owner of the Halogen pencil skirt-- I can currently wear it low on the hip, but for a better fit and to wear it at my waist I want to get it altered.

I've never had anything professionally altered before (I have several female family members that are master seamstresses, so I cheat). Unfortunately, my grandmother has had to take a last minute trip and won't be able to do the alterations-- I gave the skirt to my mother (a decent sewer, but not a seamstress) and she is nervous about it, so rather than give her heart palpitations, I've decided to take the skirt to a tailor.

I was just wondering if any of the ladies that have had the skirt altered through the waist and hips (especially alterations where the side seams were opened up--- a more complex alteration than a 1/2 inch nip) would be able to tell me what price they paid for the alterations. Obviously different areas of the country will be different, but I've been quoted all types of prices from $80- to - $5 and I am trying to pick something that is reasonably on par. I don't think some of the lower quotes are reasonable as far as doing it properly (it is going to take way more time then hemming a pair of trousers) but even $50 turns a 60 dollar skirt into a 100-plus dollar POLYESTER skirt. How much did your waist/hip alterations cost?

Also, I am a bit nervous about what happens if he/she mucks up the skirt or does the alterations improperly. What is the etiquette/recourse for this? I know enough about alterations to be dangerous and have issues with a sub-par job-- but not enough to achieve professional results myself. Of course, I'm also having issues getting tailoring recommendations-- maintenance employees and elementary school teachers here apparently don't have much use for tailoring carhart pants and polo shirts.
