I am about at the point I would be ok with someone just ripping the dang stuff out of my head.

I have very fine, super straight hair with the exception of a few cowlicks. It has always been super healthy and shiny. It looked good long (past my shoulder blades) but my two favorite cuts were probably at my shoulders with choppy layers and some layering through the top for volume, and a chin length bob with sideswept bangs.

Then I went through a period where a ton of my hair fell out. Some has grown back, but it isn't growing out of my head healthy and is limp (GLUED to my head) and breaks very easily. Honestly, I got the same haircut done by the same person (a version of a haircut I loved) and it looks bad. It looks bad down and isn't flattering around my face with no volume and all the breakage and it looks bad up with all the breakage, new growth and being practically plastered to my head. I have no idea what I am going to do.

I've had a lot of hairstyles over the years. I'm pretty willing to try new styles, and I think my face shape is average enough that I can get away with a fairly wide range, but there are certain things that just work better for me at this phase of my life.

When I was younger, my hair was much more coarse and curly. I fought it like hell. Now it's more wavy than curly (although it's not hard to bring out the curl if I really wanted to), and I prefer it straight. I blow dry it straight most days, but rarely bother with the hot iron. One thing that I know about my hair: blunt cuts are never ever good on me. I do well with layers. My hair is fine but I have a fair amount of it, so it can look big and bushy if I don't have layers cut into it. It's also highly unlikely I will ever let it get below shoulder length again. It's just too much work, and it starts looking unhealthy.

I have a stylist I trust and love. I've been going to him for nearly 8 years, and he knows I don't want to look like a soccer mom (again, like Marley, no offense to soccer moms!). When I sit in his chair, I ask him, "What do you think we should do this time?" and I almost always go for whatever he suggests. The last couple times, I suggested changing my highlights from blondish to reddish, and everyone seems to really like the change. I'd be tempted to even go more auburn/red while I'm still relatively young. Ish. I don't want to look like the old ladies trying desperately to cover their gray with bright red hair.

Right now I'm not sporting my absolute favorite cut, but we're keeping my hair a bit longer so I can pull it back for running. After my race in June, I'll probably go for a whole new cut. I like a bit of edge to my hairstyle, but I still want it to flatter my face and draw attention to my eyes, which are my best feature, while playing down my jawline, which is not.

My hair looks great long (to the middle of my back) with long layers and blonde highlights. I like to wear my hair in updo's a lot. I've had it short, choppy and funky many times, most recently an angled bob with bangs. Now I'm in the process of growing it out again, with long bangs and long layers. I feel more feminine and can do more with it when it's long.

Now I guess I've found my style!
I've embraced my curls, no more flat-ironed, I just wash my hair, put a nice foam for curls and live the house ;)

Ive never been adventurous with my hair and for yrs wore it a few to several inches below my shoulders and usually part up/down....it's thick and has some waves (especially as it got longer) but I started getting REAL bored with it when I was in my late 40's. Went for a different look (brought a pic along) from my stylist, got a HORRIBLE cut- NOTHING like the pic at all.....went to a different cutter, begged for help, she put me in a bob that was barely above my shoulders and flat-ironed it... I loved it, got SO many compliments from regular customers and co-workers....DH was/is not too happy- he loved it long....a few months later I went for a little shorter, angled bob and have kept that for the last 2 yrs...I just feel much frumpier when it starts growing out....

Me too in my forties. After trying everything possible from full shave to lioness mane and everything in between I came back to what I had in my teens: a bob. I find it's the easiest and most stylish. But now my face is older, so I need layers, but essentially, it's the same structure as my first haircuts.

Oh Una - my hairdresser is the same way. Everytime I go in for a cut and color - she has magazines spread out and pictures marked - and I just say "so what have you got for me this time?" And she shows me what she's thinking - and 99% of the time I give her the green light and she goes for it! One time (this was my idea) I had her give me an "afro" perm - I just wanted to see what that would be like - it was actually really fun - my girlfriends thought I was crazy - my husband thought I was beautiful (but he always thinks I'm beautiful) so - it was a fun experiment! One other time, I was a platinum blonde - it didn't look real good with my skin tone, so I didn't keep that one for very long - but it was FUN!

Like Marley, I'm a changeling when it comes to hair. So the perfect cut for me today is going to bore me in six weeks. My hairdresser is an expert at keeping me entertained - like a mom with a toddler on a long plane ride, she's always pulling something out of her bag of tricks to keep me from boredom. Sometimes it's just a tweak or a new color. I don't know what I'd do without her!

Yes - I've found my hairstyle - although I am always open to trying something new or at least a slight variation of what I have! I am the type of person who is never afraid to try something different with their hair - so I've had one side shaved off - I've had the faux mo, I've had it shoulder length, I've had it a pixie, a long shag and pretty much everything in beween. I've also had streaks of blue, purple and red put in it - not all at the same time. My hairdresser loves me because I'm game for anything. That has made for some interesting styles - but its only hair - it always grows out again! I love playing with my hair. The only rule that I have for my hairdresser is that I don't want to look like a soccer mom - nothing against soccer moms, I just don't want to look like one!

After I had my first child I cut my hair into a pixie. That has been my style for the past 5 years. Last summer and a co-workers wedding I had a hair revelation of sorts and decided I didn't like it short anymore. So began the difficult growing out stage. It is now to my chin in a bob and I am pretty happy with it. I look forward to growing it out a bit more. I have highlights to give it body.

I think so. I get bored rather easy and i'm always coming up with the drastic changes on a whim and then others talk me back down (deep cut blunt bags! a super short pixie cut!). Having curly hair i feel like there aren't a *whole* lot of styles to choose from but if i'm feeling super bored by it i usually just straighten my hair and/or style it differently for the day. Then i'm good and fine with my normal hair style again.

Mine is perfect for me. I wash it, then I pull a wide tooth comb through it, then I get out the door and don't think about it for the rest of the day.

And ironically I'm getting more compliments on it than I did when I washed it every day, put product in it, blowdried it, and flat-ironed it.

It seems my mistake was putting in too much effort, and not letting my hair just do its thing.

Nope, I love to change my hair, even if it's only a little sometimes. The only thing I need in all haircuts is layers to help the curls, and I generally avoid blunt bangs (again, curly hair). I've had it from a couple inches short to down to my tailbone long, and most lengths in between

Yes - some variation of an angled bob above my shoulders. It's just the most foolproof option for me (as long as I have a hair stylist who knows what she is doing & can cut many disguised layers.)

Yes, but I like to change it up...
It will always include some sort of bang. I just had it trimmed several inches, but recently I've been growing it out and wearing it straight with lots of layers and a raisin-y color that really brings out my eyes.
I like a long bob, and my hair also does a lovely natural curl when it's a bit shorter, so I have options and like to experiment to keep things fresh.

Yep, I found mine in 1991. I was going camping in Denmark with my hubby and young son and needed a REAL wash and wear hair style. My stick-straight, very thick hair was already quite short, pixie length.

We lived in a small village 15 miles south of Heidelberg. My local German stylist cut it to a 1/2" allover length with longer, fringy bangs. I love it and have been wearing it this way ever since. Hard to believe that my hair used to be waist-length!

I tried to post a picture, but it I got a CANCEL message in the Add a Photo block.

I have the same struggle. I have very straight, very fine and very THICK hair. I have had nearly every hairstyle you can think of: Waist length, shoulder length, shaved all the way down, mohawk, layered, permed, bangs, no bangs... You get the idea.

Right now my hair is in a pixie cut. I like it in that I don't feel like I'm fighting my hair and it is easy to style in the morning and holds up during the day. However I am am sometimes self-conscious that I look too butch or boyish. My husband really likes it though.

I'm considering growing it back out.

I think most styles I've tried so far suited me -except for weird short escalated fringes. I've done the pixie, the long pixie, the short bob, the mid-length bob, the long bob (both regular and inverted) the cleopatra fringe, the long sided part fringe, no fringe, wavy and straight lol Have never dyed my hair, so that's something I still have to try. I love changing my hairstyle, what I hate is waiting for it to be normal so I can change it again!

I think it changes over time. I had long curly hair that was really my style, but over time I got tired of it. I wasn't sure where to go from there and took a chance when a stylist suggested an inverted bob. It ended up working nicely with the wavy texture and I like the more modern look of it. It's so much easier to style than long hair. So now I feel like I have at least two very different styles that work well for my hair.

What's your texture and length like? Maybe someone here with similar hair could make a few suggestions.

I think mine is an angled bob and is a shorter, more shaped version of what I wore when much younger. It's also my natural color, so doesn't need to be dyed or touched up. My ideal hairstyle is one that I don't have to fight with on a daily basis, fits with my clothing style, and goes reasonably well with my face shape, etc. It seems the older you get, the more that one needs something that looks styled. There comes a time where long hair, whether loose or pulled into a pony tail, looks sloppy. The exception would be to wear it up.

I've changed my hair many times over the years. Now that I'm in my 40's, I still haven't found a look that I love and makes me feel good in my skin and fits my budget. At times, I feel that the ideal hairstyle doesn't exist for me...shouldn't I have found it by now?

Have you found your ideal/tried and true hairstyle? What is it, and why do you like it so much?
