I'm not a fan of the long bob. I do like your hair long, but I think you need a better cut that works with your hair structure! If that means growing some layers out a bit I would do that. Interesting that they don't thin the hair out in the US, they always do it with my hair (either with shears or those other implements, no idea what they're called), no matter how long my hair is.

I have very thick hair too. I was also told it was Asian-like, whatever that means. I have had my share of bob haircuts, and they are difficult to manage without some blow drying skills. And your stylist has to be skilled in thinning out bulk. And I need product to keep the top from going flat because of the weight of the hair.

I like your hair now, but if you want to go in a shorter direction, I'd work with a stylist to let the shorter layers grow out a bit. I think LONG layers are good with thick hair, but arriving at that point can be a process of give and take.

I know this isn't the direction of your original thread, but I would also suggest a Devacurl Salon if you are near one!! and Devacurl products!! They sell them at Ulta.
Lorraine Massey has written a book called the Curly Girl Handbook - LIFE CHANGING. I highly recommend it. It has helped me to embrace my curls and to maximize what God has given me instead of fighting it every day. It starts with a good cut. There are quite few You Tube channels for curly girls and Naturallycurly.com is a great resource.

Just make sure you get it cut for how you'll style it.

You can't get a great cut for curly/wavy and have it look awesome straightened. [And vice versa.] The c/w specialists really look at your pattern and cut to enhance/offset randomness.

I wrote another reply but closed out before sending, duh. Bottom line is I haven't found ~ shoulder length harder to style (in terms of wash-product-go) than longer as long as the cut is good. And a big yes to all the hair on the floor and the light feeling at the end even when the length remains about the same.

I prefer longer on me -- and fully support you growing yours out -- but sometimes ya gotta chop or the mullet never really dies. 0;

ps omg resist the straight-across bangs unless you're committed to straightening and never being around humidity hahaha! I hear ya on that temptation. Longer side-swept are great with wavy hair though. Much more forgiving.

I like your hair long but the shorter version would look great. I am also one of those who finds longer hair easier to deal with. When my hair was shorter (shoulder length) I had to style it every morning (poor me). I tend to like to just let my hair style itself. Longer with long layers works better for that.
I don't have super thick hair but I get that point.

Some people use thinning shears on me and that leaves a pile on the floor. Im guessing that this takes less skill than cuttingn in layers with scissors.
But that is just a guess.

If you opt for long hair you might consider doing something with the front so that you can creat a really great pony tail.

I have similar hair to you: very thick individual strands. Mine is very wavy at the back (Loose ringlets) but it's too much work to get it looking good so I brush it flat so that most of the curl comes out.

A long bob with layering at the bottom would be good and you can put it up if you need to.

I really like your hair long too.

Here is my hair, which look better a touch shorter and without those long bits at the bottom (my cut is actually longer but the top layers are overpowering the bottom ones). This is day 3 after washing. Day 2 is ok too. Day 1 I have to put up in a ponytail or else flat iron because it's too frizzy and has too much body.

I don't do much maintenance other that wash and comb and do my ponytail trick on day 1. I use a lot of conditioner but I bet you do too :-).

It is certainly not a "polished" look, unfortunately.

I am really appreciating all this feedback as it is helping me work through the pros and cons.

I think I will probably give this style a try at some point, but right now might not be the right time. I don’t have a schedule that lends itself to much self care. Baby just KNOWS the second I get up, and I have no time to myself. It is frustrating but I know it will pass eventually. Also I checked this morning and my shortest layers are woefully short. Well above my ears, so I think I should let it grow more.

One of the things I like about Brigitte’s hair is the little bangs, which is the other siren-song-cycle-of-woe that I can’t resist. They are cute when they are done well, but they are perpetually growing out, and then inevitably at some point they get trimmed badly and look awful. I grew mine out to have more reliable good hair days.

A tangentially related thing that has been puzzling me is that in Germany wherever I went they thinned out my hair like crazy, like piles and piles on the floor, but keeping the length, and here in the U.S. they don’t seem to do that at all. I would have thought that cutting technique would be similar across border, but perhaps not.

Yeah, Ms. Brigitte definitely has a high maintenance ’do, including color, cut, and styling.

Bella, thank you for your sweet words and smart advice. By the way, if you want smooth hair plus lots of volume, try a massive round brush (3.25 inch/8 cm diameter). This one is amazing the two times a year I manage to use it.

Janet, the dreaded curly triangle, no! Your hair is looking very stylish these days, by the way.

Firecracker, that is a really smart suggestion that I would never have thought of! I often feel like the problem lies in communication more than in the skills of the stylist, so having a consultation would help nip that in the bud. The last time I went to my long-time stylist, for which I drive to another state, I had to request that she look at my hair before it was washed so I could explain what isn’t working. It annoyed me that I needed to demand to be seen with my hair as is, and then I had to repeat myself to the receptionist, the hair wash girl I rejected, the confused girl summoned to take me to the stylist, and then the stylist. It’s a very successful salon, but it starts to feel like they are running a profitable car wash. So what I meant to say by all that is that she is talented, but our communication isn’t working.

Okay, I think I got out all my hair rants for now.

I'm like Vix, I like Brigitte T's style, but perhaps in spite of the hair style, which I'm not as crazy about. I do think her length of bob would look good on you. But a style that's hard to maintain (i.e., takes a long time to dry & style) would drive me nuts. I do have one recommendation for you: interview potential stylists before trying one out. I did that after my last move, and I was very happy I did. You can book a consultation, and I found they were free. It's helpful to discuss what the stylist would recommend for your hair type, and to find out what techniques they would use and why.

My hair is not nearly as thick (I'm jealous! I know I know, grass is always greener...) but it's quite flat and hard to get to do anything. I've had some luck with this John Frieda hot brush though some reviewers with thicker hair say it isn't as powerful as they'd like... but if you're up for a $25 experiment it might be worth a try! It's been a nice tool for me, particularly when I had a shorter bob.

Lol at your Alice comment Janet!:)
Well, I have tried the long bob a few times as well. On me, I have the opposite problem, it kind of becomes flat and lifeless, unless I use a lot of volumizing product. One also needs mad blow-out skills which I don't have. Either way, I think it is a kind of hairstyle that is super high-maintenance.

High five, Bella. I was thinking about this this morning and remembered that the big problem with my hair when I had a bob was that it was very thick and needed a ton of layering, and even then it was hard to avoid the triangle look (like Alice from the Dilbert cartoon). I think you'd be doing a lot of styling with a bob, speaking from experience with hair that has a lot of wave and texture (mine is not as thick as it used to be).

I have only skipped through the other comments, so I think I am going against the common wisdom but here it is:

I think long bobs are extremely hard to maintain. The best looking ones are always on celebrities or public figures like the new first lady of France, who have access to 24/7 hair care and maintenance. For the mere mortals like us, they very rarely look good au naturel, and you really have to have the right kind of hair.
I've always admired your super thick, luscious hair. And I think your best look is the super long hairstyle as in #2. So I am all for growing it out.

DonnaF, there is a lot of wisdom in what you wrote. I can tell you really get my dilemma too because I know exactly what you mean about being impatient and creating a bush :)
I actually did try going short once, and I even fantasized about it recently, reasoning that I would look polished with less effort, but the truth is I tried short hair once and it was awful on me. I don’t think every face can support it.

Janet and Shedev, thank you for the long hair validation. I have told my husband multiple times in the past that if I ever want to cut my hair short to remind me that I never end up liking it. But I guess the cut, drama, and grow cycle is a siren song to me, LOL. Just been so unhappy with the crazy layers in my current haircut. That is probably part of the drive to chop chop.

Angie, I know from following the forum over the years that there are some people who are able to get down to tacs and pop out like a fresh butterfly into their new phase of life at amazing speed. I guess I am more like a cautious turtle coming out of my shell Thank you for the support and encouragement.

I also like your hair long, but I can relate to what a pain it is to have high maintenance hair.

I might be an outlier, but I really love your hair long!

(Possibly controversial confession: I don't find bobs as universally flattering as many people seem to. Might be my own personal bias because I look AWFUL in one.)

Going against one's hair texture and curl/wave/straightness will always take more time. . .After being terribly resistant, I have learned that hair product can make a huge difference in the way my hair looks. Unfortunately, what works on my hair makes it feel weird to the touch, but then again I don't want anybody touching my hair.

I finally gave up on bobs due to the thickness of my hair and how long it would take to blow dry. I would get lazy and impatient so it would look like a bush and never sleek. I went short, but I don't think that's your style, at least not now.

Be fearless about asking women with similarly textured hair whose cut you like where they get their hair done. And give that person two chances since after the first cut they will better understand how your hair behaves and grows out.

Best wishes!

Vix, oh my gosh, yes it is coarse. In fact it was recommended to me to consider a hairdresser who specialises in Asian hair, because apparently that is whole different ballgame. Thanks for sharing your go-to product. I need to broaden my horizons. I don't think that Brigitte's hair is naturally straight. There are plenty of photos where has developed a bit of a wave.

Aida, thanks for the recommendation. My hair seems to have gotten more wavy over time and I have yet to fully adjust.

Hi S --

We have similar hair (can't recall if yours is also coarse) and I just had mine chopped to a bit above shoulder for similar reasons -- haircutter was having an off day and her fix didn't really fix.

I went back to a curly hair expert after the grow-out and hair is fine to air-dry -- a good cut really does debulk. I mean it still takes forever but it doesn't dry in a weird way without the extra length to weigh it down.

So that's my ramble/tip: find a true wavy/curly cutter and go shorter.

ps I do have to use product, absolutely! Even just a regular conditioner worked in will do wonders. I hate product but the creamy ones are do-able (aka I can't really tell -- Se*y Hair Slept In is my go-to).

pss I don't like B's hair. Looks like a wig to me. Perhaps it's curly and she straightens?

Scarlet, check out Ouidad curly/wavy hair products if you're inclined to go wavy. My hair is fine and thin and their products are light enough not to weigh my hair down (which almost never happens!!). Haven't had much experience with their wavy/loose curl line but if it's anything like the curly stuff I'm using it should work nicely. Trick is finding the right ones.

Sylvie, thank you for the kind encouragement and advice.

Angie, but then I have to be a big girl and do my hair all the time. It's so hard But I am trying to grow up really. It's also a good push from you too to be more serious about product. I don't like it when I can feel something in my hair, but I also need to get real about it.

Well I do think it's worth a try. And if it doesn't work out, at least all my crazy layering will be fixed.
