Yep-- definitely! I always have to fight with hairdressers that don't know me well to cut my hair edgy because of how I show up to the salon. I guess my "grungy" clothes throw them off, but my mother always told us to wear cruddy stuff to the salon because of perm and color accidents in the past and I just can't get myself to break the habit. Anyway, I often find people take me for conservative and cut my perfectly straight hair that way and then I literally wear it up for a month until it gets RATE because I feel so creepy and unlike myself.

On the other hand, a really polished mid-length (long bob) cut lets me get away with not putting effort into other things, because it means my natural hair looks like I spent an hour blow drying and flat ironing when I WASHED it. On the other hand, that means that I try to get away with things I shouldn't (wearing gear) and tend to feel I look scary with makeup on (too girly).

Really long hair can look sexy or scraggly on me and I often find myself trying to edge it up with tough girl touches.

Super short hair on me means I take care of everything better on a more holistic level. I can't hide extra weight, not enough sleep, or spots and I also tend to wear natural makeup and do more with jewelery and tops near my face to highlight that.

I'm growing my pixie out. Can't say that any haircuts in the past 20 years (of which there have been MANY) have made a big change for me. I got lots of compliments on my pre-pixie cut and I'm growing back out to that style. I'm sort of excited for something a little softer though I did love the short hair.

Not that the new one isn't short by normal standards. I'm going to an angled bob of sorts. Layered, side swept bangs, jaw length in front, very short in back.

Una, I can name a few changes.

Most people felt like their style changed when they went short; I felt like mine changed when I grew my hair out. In late high school/early college, my hair was highlighted quite blonde and was about shoulderblade length at its longest; in late college, I let my hair grow about this long again. I felt quite feminine, but in a way I also felt boring. (As I mentioned to Kate in my comment above, my hair is TOTALLY flat when it's long, unless I have an exceptionally good cut; and even then, it's a challenge to get it to look good.) I felt like the only style that worked on me was to have my hair blow-dried and flat-iron or curl the ends. I don't look good in a ponytail or half-ponytail or most updos - my hair doesn't have a lot of body when it's pulled back and it's unflattering. So I really struggled to try to wear brighter colors or accessories to make up for feeling like my hair wasn't quite so fab.

In between the two "long" phases, I cut my hair short and started dying it red. Short hair has always made me feel fresh and cute and more willing to try styles that were fun and new; red hair made me feel sassy and a bit daring, less "sweet" than the long blonde locks I'd sported in the past.

In my most recent cut, while I'm nowhere near a pixie, my asymmetrical bob is on the very short end of the bob spectrum, and it is incredibly layered and razor-cut, and I can play with product to add a LOT of volume. I feel like this is the bit of edge that I've needed to temper my pencil skirt/dress wardrobe.

I know this is terribly un-specific, so it may not be too helpful, but it's been fun to walk down memory lane and read the other posts. Thanks for starting this thread, Una.

Kate, your hair sounds so much like mine, except that yours is prettier and straighter when it's flat/long. (Mine isn't wavy at all but has funny cowlicks - the best way to describe it in its long state, unless it is HIGHLY layered, is just "limp" and "flat.")

I still think you should get a funky, RATE inverted/stacked bob.

My hair is so straight and fine that it lacks character when it's long. Sure it's smooth and pretty enough, but it just hangs there. When it's short, it's free to actually have some volume, doesn't get caught on things, and is much easier to deal with. It's freeing, and I think that comes out more. It's also more polished. When my hair is long enough to hit my shoulders (or past my shoulders) it starts doing weird things. Granted, it could also be more RATE if I got it cut/styled that way, so I guess it's really just more purposeful, if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I think purposeful is really the best word for it. The longer my hair gets, the more I feel like I don't have control over my look. For example, when I wore this dress (picture from almost a year ago!) a month ago with hair past my shoulders I didn't feel like it coming across quite the way I wanted it to. I wore it yesterday (one week post haircut) and felt like it was giving off the kinda funky, kinda retro, yet polish look that I was going for.

Joy, I agree that long hair can actually be much easier that way. I never did anything exciting with it, but I also never had to work it or worry about it sticking straight up in the morning or wash and style it every morning. Interesting!

My hair story is a little different. Until a couple of years ago I had a much longer bob so that the front was shoulder length or longer. However, I almost always wore it up in a smooth twist. It is the easiest hair style I've ever had and got lots of compliments. I didn't have to do anything to it but wash it.
Since getting it cut shorter and wearing it down (too short now to put up) I rarely wear statement earrings and don't like turtle necks as much. The long hair worn up was more like a very short haircut but maybe more sophisticated. It was a more polished look than what I have now. The down side is that it made me look older.

I've had everything from Mid back hair to almost buzzed. It does make an impact on dressing.
I hate shoulder bags when hair is long but prefer them with short hair (Hair pulling-ouch)
Less likely to go without makeup with short hair, and wear earrings more.
Short hair = no high neck tops, all I see then are my ears.
Long hair = lazy in dressing nicer 'cause I don't like to wear cute outfits unless my hair looks good too and long hair sometimes takes longer to fix.
Over all though my style stays the same and is effected more by life- where I live, job.

I've made a pretty big change this year! I also agree - shorter has equaled edgier for me. Sometimes i do miss my curly medium length hair but my BFF told me my current haircut makes me look older and since i have a baby face that sold me. :)

I also tried to make the arguement, "what about my bare neck in winter time?!". She said, "Wear a scarf. You love scarves."

I've had long hair since high school but . . . when I went from almost 2 feet of hair to just a bit below the shoulders I felt quite bare. For the first time as an adult, my latissumus dorsi were on display lol! I know one foot compared to two feet of hair isn't so different, but the way it made me feel was. For now I am deciding bra band length is good for winter, but I may revisit just below shoulders come spring/summer.

I haven't gotten a cut recently but have colored my hair so now it is basically a bright red graduated to brownish red on the ends. People have commented positively on the color (including parents and my boss, heh!).

Stylewise, I think the color gives my outfits an edge (not that they usually need more of an edge). Much like Angie's short cut, which gives her clean modern lines an edge, the color gives my more conservative outfits an edge. When I wear my more edgier outfits the hair fits the gestalt better than my normal color.

Short hair (if cut well) not only brings out an edgier look; it IS itself an edgier look. At least most of the time. If growing out badly, it can be very dowdy. (Said by one who has grown out her hair badly many times. ;-(

My stylist always like to remind me that the shorter the cut, the edgier he can make it (especially with my curly hair). Last year I went in and asked him to keep it long but make it "not sweet" and got a very bemused grin from him. I'm planning to do the same later this month; we'll see if he humors me this time or decides to do something else entirely

About a year ago, I had a chin-length layered cut, and let my thick hair, that has acquired some natural waves as I have grown older, do what it wanted to do. I don't think it looked bad, but sometimes I worried that it looked sort of 1980s. Some friends Chi'd my hair on night, and it was very flattering--so I got a Chi iron and started doing that, and that updated my look. And then another friend talked me into maintaining the layers, but growing my hair longer. So I have.

Well! I have never had so many positive comments on my hair, and so much positive attention, generally, related to my appearance, in my entire life! I have put a lot of clothing in the give away pile, on the grounds of having shrunk out of it, or it just reading "matronly" and I think the new hair style has a great deal to do with this.

I cut my hair every few years, usually from long (shoulder blades or so) to very very short. I don't know why I bother to grow it out - I always end up hating it - but I'm just one of those people who cycles through it.

With short hair, I:
1. need to be more mindful of both makeup and jewelry because people can see them better, and an overload of either is more obvious
2. feel like people notice my body more in general because it's more visible, so I get more particular about what I wear.

Hey Vildy that's very interesting. What did you yourself think of your haircut?

I recently cut my hair very short from almost shoulder length. I just decided one day life is too short to wait around for my hair to grow. Too much energy was spent on trying to work around growing hair, blow-drying for volume, pinning up, tousling, etc.

I had it cut over the summer gradually and now have a very very short pixie similar in length to that of Angie. I love it. I feel so good, so free.

I am now embracing some more modern new styles I used to shy away from, because now my hair can make it look so stylish.

I had to give up puff sleeved garments. But the boxy or bat wing shapes of the moment look very good with very short hair!

I've been living with a relaxed hair disaster from last summer. We always want what we don't have, right?! I finally decided to do the big chop. I didn't necessarily want short hair, it was a spur of the moment decision. I just couldn't take my dead, dry, straight ends any more and I wanted them off. I like my new short hair and I am so grateful to have my curls back. I will never mess with the texture again. I gave my hairdresser my curling/straightening irons because I never want to see them again. The new style is fun and I am enjoying it but I am looking forward to having my short cropped bob back. It was my first haircut at age 12 and it is still my favorite hairstyle of all time.

The new short style has changed the way I dress and accessorize. Clothes look different on me with short hair. I feel strange wearing statement earrings or necklaces. Scoop and V necks are also more challenging now because I have more exposed skin on my neck and torso. All in all it is a welcome style refresher as I am forced to view all of my clothes and accessories in a new way.

I recently chopped 8 inches off of my hair and add layers. The cut added more movement and "sass" to my hairstyle. This trickled over into my fashion sense - I am once again starting to plan out my daily outfits, and finding that I am mixing classic pieces (think pants, jackets) with non-traditional pieces.

Well, this is not about a style change but is about a change in people's perceptions of me. Not sue what motivated the haircut - from typical longish pageboy bob to very short, contoured, bit of featheriness coming in at temples. Maybe just boredom. Anyway, I was an officer in a district parent organization and was running for election as president. Everyone had to go through the formality of a candidate interview, conducted by staff and other members who knew me really well. Mostly what I did was attend meetings, including testifying at hearings, etc.

So I got the haircut and then had to listen to people evaluating me in response to the "interview", wherein they prattled on about how I had "grown" in office. At first, I thought this was bizarre and then realized they were reacting to what some of them called my "bad" haircut. Boy, I thought, a ten dollar haircut and people make up whole life histories for you, in your favor.

Arya, this is for you and anyone else who made a change - either drastic or minor but different enough to alter your fashion sensibility. What was the cut and how and why did you change your style? I am contemplating a bit of a change and I adore hair stories!

:-)
