Well it does look good in the first pictures. This I did not deny! I haven't taken any other clear pictures of it since getting it cut though, so realistically no one here would know how it looks :)

I don't even think it's the humidity anymore. I don't have frizz problems since I stopped blowdrying (somehow it inspires the baby hairs to stick out all over the place). I just don't think the products are working for me. They probably work for diffused hair but not air dried. Or maybe the curl cream is for VERY curly hair, and mine is only slightly wavy. I'm not sure. It's definitely a product issue.

Maya, I have been avoiding replying to this thread. I think you (like April) have some hair dysmorphia going on You seem to have great hair and honestly, it looks pretty fab in every picture you post. I have seen in in person and it looked fantastic! If you don't believe the 50+ replies to this thread telling you how great it is (and it's one of several obsessing about your hair), I don't know what will help???!!!

The other thing to keep in mind is not every one has a salon beautiful hair day every day. I'm pretty obsessive about my hair too and this summer has been brutal. The heat and the humidity has really done a number on it and even though I spend 20+ minutes blowing it out every other day, I still end up having to tie it up in a pony tail more often than not (something I HATE doing) because of the frizz! I have about a gazillion hair products in my cabinet and regardless of what I use or what method I go about it, it still looks like crap on these very humid days (part of the reason why I couldn't stand living down south!!). I say just wait a week or two and you will see that your hair is going to start behaving once it cools down a bit.

Maya, have you thought about wrapping your hair in a microfibre wrap to help it dry a bit more before you put product in? I only leave mine for 10 mins or so (getting dressed time) but it does make a HUGE difference in terms of how dry my hair is when I get to the styling point.

I have one like this (but a cheaper version) http://www.sephora.com/browse/.....?id=P35087

Maya-- both the photos on this thread and the photos that you took of your earrings both look good.

If I were you I would call up the salon and explain the situation. They should schedule you another appt./consultation at no cost to you. I would walk in with your hair styled the way you have been styling it and explain to the stylist the issues you are having. I would make it very clear that blow drying or air drying before styling is not an option (you did tell her this in the first place, right?). She should be able to suggest an alternative product or method.

Prior to cutting your hair, what were you doing differently? Did you use product at all? Have you tried your old product on the new cut?

I really hope that you are able to work something out. This shape is great on your face, and even short hair you are probably going to have to use product with (which could create the same "wormies" that are buggin you).

She gave me a lesson Jenava. A very thorough one, actually. But there were some key differences:

-My hair was a lot dryer when she added product. I don't have time in the morning to let mine dry that much.

-She used a diffuser. I don't have time for that either, and it sort of defeats the purpose of this haircut.

She also used a lot MORE product, but I'm afraid to do that since just a tiny bit of product seems to be making my hair wormy-looking.

Ah, sad news. This cut just isn't working out for me. It has looked awful every day this week. I have tried all different ways of using product, and it just isn't working. I can't have a style that I can't maintain, no matter how it looks when I leave the salon.

While at H&M today I saw a girl with shiny, voluminous, gorgeous long hair and when I looked in the mirror I wanted to weep. It was such a cruel foil!

I'm just going to have to accept that my hair will never be my crowning glory and either cut it or grow it out and pull it up every day.

Anyway, it was fun for the one day that it lasted...

It ALWAYS looks better when the stylist does it. That's just a law of nature.

Rub the product between both hands first - don't use too much - about the size of a quarter (adjust by trial and error.) Lately I've been applying product when soaking wet - straight out of the shower. (Thanks for this tip, Cricket!) Bend over and rake your fingers through your hair. You can even comb it through with a wide-tooth comb. (Never comb or brush curly hair when DRY, but you can use a wide-tooth comb to distribute conditioner in the shower, or styling product when hair is still wet. Then gently blot with a soft towel (t-shirt, CurlEase towel, big tea towel - anything that won't cause friction.)

Even then it's no guarantee - but that should help a little with the crunchies!

Maya, if you want to shampoo everyday, or need to do an "emergency" shampoo to erase a bad hair day, you can use baby shampoo. I used to use that when my hair was longer, it doesn't contain any harsh chemicals and it isn't drying, either. Plus, it's super cheap. I just bought the Johnson and Johnson brand at the grocery store.

I second putting the product in back first. Something that worked for me was to rub it through my hands so it was evenly distributed, then just lightly scrunch it into the back and work my way forward. Also, I would recommend using slightly more product, and apply it to your hair when it is very wet (before you towel dry it, even). When it air dries, it will be slightly crunchy, but you can then carefully turn your head over and "scrunch out the crunch" with your hands. If you just gently scrunch your hair, it will break up the crunchiness a little.

There's a lot of conflicting information about curly hair out there. I think it's just that something different works for everybody and it takes some experimenting to figure out what works for you personally. It's good that you seem to have some patience and an open mind to try different things.

I love your new cut!

I had to chuckle at your description of the "curl community"! I guess we are a group with our own culture and rules :). You know, my hair always seems to be sort of in shock or something right after a cut--it usually takes a week or two for it to work itself out. Maybe that could be playing a role here. Also, has it been particularly humid? I know that my hair does not like to cooperate when it's humid out.

Hmm, combing through is a good idea Scarlet. I am getting lots of conflicting advice from the curl community: to comb or not to come, to shampoo or not to shampoo, etc. It will probably still take some experimenting to come up with my own perfect combination of methods. I'll try combing it tomorrow. and see if that helps make the product distribution more even.

Today was a missed opportunity because I shampoo every other day, so if my hair was bad yesterday, it will inevitably be bad today. Tomorrow is a fresh start. Hopefully it will go better.

I assume your hair is still wet when you apply the product? I usually start applying product in the back and at the ends of my hair and just put the tiniest bit on the top/front. I usually comb through after that when the hair is still wet. I have never had crunchiness issues.

Maya-I really like this cut on you. It's edgy and perfect with your style. I'm not great with hair myself, but it looks like a wash n go type of style and brings out your waves nicely. Maybe just wash add some cream type product and go? Maybe use less product? I often use too much product.

Oh, I didn't expect to see this thread back. Thanks Joy, Katie, and Anne!

Honestly I am not really getting the hang of styling it. I had to wear it up in an emergency claw clip yesterday and again today because it looks so bad (and it's only 10:00). I don't know how my stylist got it to look so soft and tously. When I do it, it looks crunchy, stringy, and flat. Not so fab :(

I'm hoping I'll get the hang of it eventually, but I don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong :\ The only differences between how she did it and how I'm doing it are that I don't use a diffuser and I use less product. She said it would still look good air dried though. The waves would be a little loose but that's it. I use less product because just the tiny amount I do use feels so heavy. But it didn't when she did it, even though she used more. I mean you could definitely feel the product but it didn't look stringy and feel like hay.

I really make every effort to distribute it evenly, but somehow the front always ends up crunchy and heavy while the back seems virtually untouched. I am going to try only applying the curl cream in the back tomorrow and use whatever residue is left on my hands in the front and see how that goes tomorrow. It's frustrating because it's a really great cut and I know it can look good but I am still somehow managing to screw it up!

Love this much softer, less angular look on you! It will look more natural when you're scrunching/encouraging it your own way. I find that my hair always looks a bit "helmet-y" (not exactly like a helmet -- maybe "wig-like" is more accurate) after the stylist dries it, but I know it will be more me when I do it myself.

Angie! My eyebrows have not been threaded in ages (before the DC meetup). They are not a pretty sight up close. Must get that done today. Having bangs covering them made me lazy. I'm amused to hear that but I guess you can't tell how dire the situation is from the picture.

Jean, she gave me a mousse, curl cream, and hair spray. She gave it versatility so I can wear it wavy, messy/bedhead-ish, and straight. It's going to take a while for me to explore all these options, but I'm glad I have them.

Theresa, I hated my hair so much that I knew I couldn't possibly hate it more, so it wasn't easy to hand myself over to her. I knew she was an expert and I am not. I also made sure to pick a stylist who had wavy or curly hair herself.

AJ, I used to have a guitar but I sold it to my brother :(

Thank you everyone! Your comments have made my day.

I for one am very happy to see your extraordinary eyebrows again as I have missed them.

I think the last picture of your do looks KILLER. Quite soft and romantic, but in a Joan Jet way. I'm sure the do will settle down after you've worked out how to manage it.
