I have a bob also and yesterday I had some layers cut. He cut them underneath so I can wear it wavy but also still sleek. I really like it and it gives it more movement. I have cowlicks too but using a straight nozzle on a hairdryer works pretty well.

I think light layers on the bottom would work well for you and blunter bangs would look great too. I love a slight angle on a bob, it helps it lay right and looks modern.

I've come to terms with my hair and have decided that the best strategy is to only have it cut into a style that works with what it will--and will not--do naturally. I'm tired of fighting with my hair! I have a good hairstylist now, thank the good Lord, who helps guide my choices. Whenever I change styles, I always ask, "Will this work with my hair?"

Ruth - we may be hair twins! I have fine but thick hair and naturally pretty straight. It has gotten a little wavier and the cowlicks show more now that I have some coarser gray (although that is covered by natural brown dye).
I have done the angled bob and will most likely go back to that - last cut I had was not by my normal stylist and the girl I had sort of undid the angle.

My stylist usually dries my bangs and then cuts so she can see the cowlick - it works. Plus I do add some texture spray to them and blow dry in criss cross fashion to "confuse" the cowlick.

I understand your frustration. I have a cowl lick in the front, so I can't wear bangs; they always look like they've been cut crooked. After my fine (but not thin) straight hair reaches a certain length, it flips out on one side in the front and on the opposide side in the back. This makes it impossible to have any type of style that's supposed to either curl under or flip out. Why? Because the areas of my hair that flip out will not curl under, and the parts that do not flip out will not flip out. This is true no matter what styling products or appliances (such as curling irons) I use. During 2011, I grew my hair out as long as possible without going past the length where it starts going weird on me. That length? Right at the bottom of my earlobes. Right now I have what I'm calling a layered bob without bangs. I part my hair on the side and it flips back nicely, without me having to use any styling products. Near my ear, I had my hair stylist cut it in such a way that my earrings show. Also, the back is short and stacked. I think this is the best haircut I've had in ages, and am so happy. No blow drying. No hair spray or gel or mouse. No curling iron. Just wash, let dry naturally and go.

I took my bob from a regular one to a angled (short in back, longer in front) and it really made a huge difference how I felt about it! If you go for a straight style, by all means pick up a flat-iron, if you dont use one already...REALLY helps!! Good luck

After growing out my bob as long as I could stand it (still about 2 inches shy of goal but I realize I will never get there - my hair starts tweaking in weird way before it hits my shoulder) I booked a cut for Wednesday.

Where should I look for haircut inspiration or should I let my trusted stylist just go for it?
I was think still very light layering or staying with a bob but more angled (is that still in?) since I have some length to play. I want my bangs a little chunkier - they will never go away.

Thoughts?
