Oh, that is really frustrating! I wouldn't go back to a pixie though since you were trying so hard to grow it out. On the positive side it is most important how the hair looks around your face, so hopefully at least the front is more what you want?

I feel your pain. The same thing happened to me a few years ago; went for a trim while growing out short hair and ended up with a pixie (in Mexico, difficulty communicating), then waited six months before trimming the edges and ended up with the bowl cut. I waited another six months before going to a new stylist.

If you're not thrilled with the pixie idea then I would not get one, but I'm probably the only person on the forum not on Team Pixie. You would be starting over on a couple of years to grow out your hair, better to give this a month or two and the go to a new hairdresser who can maybe give it a more current style while it grows out. Good luck!

Aww feel better Cindy, hair grows back, it does even if it's slow. It's only hair after all! Look on th bright side. Like all other women, there are wigs, hats, fancy scarves.... But no touching the hair anymore until it grows

So frustrating! i hope you find a new stylist.... for the interim, do you like hats or scarfs worn on the hair? I got a terrible cut in HS (yes I remember the very moment I saw it nearly 20 years later!) and found some hats and scarfs to be my savior during the growing out period. Also, do you massage your scalp? that is said to make hair grow faster (although I dont know if it is true...)

Thanks, Donna! LOL on the tattoo - yes, at least not that!

I didn't show pictures because I'm at such an in between stage. And the last time she "shaped" it for me she did just what I asked. Oh well.

I went and looked at Rita's photos, and her hair is actually quite different from mine. I'm obviously not good at describing hair, which is probably why I'm in this situation to begin with! But mine is a lot shorter than hers. Hers is adorable.

My sympathies. I'm growing out my hair too, but my hair grows out ridiculously fast. I'm sure I would panic if my stylist ever retires. Screw up your courage (and remember your desperation!) and ask strangers with similar hair texture whose cuts you like from whom they get it cut. Forget what your mom told you about never talking to strangers. My guy only takes referrals, not walk-ins off the street. Also, were you able to show the stylists photos of what you want? When I showed my guy a couple of pics, he said they wouldn't work and ever look that way because my hair is too coarse with way too much volume. Yup; tends to look like a bowl and is likely never to look piecey/choppy unless I ever have to go through chemo and all my hair falls out which of course I sincerely hope I never have to face.

The good news is that it WILL eventually grow out. And it's not a misspelled tattoo.

Thanks, Zapotee. I know this cut looks great on some people - it just does not look good on me/my face shape. But I am open to all styling suggestions!

MNsara, it is not a bad cut per se - it's just not what I wanted - so I wouldn't feel comfortable asking for a fix. I think it was a communication problem, which I should have realized might happen. I find this stylist hard to talk to. We just don't click. And the only thing she could do is cut it shorter anyway. :-/

Thank you, Thistle. I think I do need a new stylist. They are just so hard to find, in my experience.

{{{hugs of sympathy}}} Yes, take a few days to see if your impression or mood about it changes. Check with the salon, though, right away to see how long you have to go back for a 'fix'. (My salon has a little sign at their counter about 7 days -- and I presume that's going back to get adjustments)

If you still are ticked off, then consider the pixie, unless they have any other brilliant suggestions -- that you trust.

Grrrr, on your behalf!

Rita (Modgrl) needs to see this, don't despair. She has a very similar cut to what you are describing and it is fab. Maybe it just needs a little tweaking.

You are right. Stay put for now.

I'm so sorry. It is really hard to find a stylist that is comfortable with short hair.

In an effort to drag myself out of the doldrums, I went to get a "trim" at my hair salon. My pixie has been growing out for months, and I nearly had a little baby bob - I've been trimming the mullet off myself, but I thought a professional shaping would do me good. Right?

Wrong.

My stylist (this is the third time I've seen her) told me she'd just "take the back up a little," and then razored my nape so now it's shorter than when I had a pixie! All those months of growth, gone. The top is still the same, which means I now have a bowl cut with a razored nape. NOT the look I was going for. I am kind of sick about this, you guys. This was MONTHS of growth. And now when it does grow out, it will grow into a stacked bob, which is exactly what I didn't want. I've had one before and it is not a good look for me. I was trying to grow it out into more of a layered bob.

So...any tips on how to style a bowl cut? At this point I'm tempted to start over and go back to the pixie, but I'm trying to take a few days and think about it before I do something (else) I regret.

And boy, do I miss my former stylist, who went and moved away on me. I've been to two other stylists since and I guess now I'll be looking for a third. This one was recommended by a friend, and she has gorgeous long hair, so it's not just that this stylists likes to cut short hair, either. I wish a good one wasn't so hard to find!

Thank you for letting me vent.

P.S. This is Cindy. I just changed how my user name appears.
