Thanks everyone for the happy thoughts! Angie, I'm just not sure that I am a picture posting kind of person! But everyone at the DC get-together will be able to see the hair (although since it's almost exactly my natural color, it isn't all that exciting!).

Steph, I am so glad you had a good outcome to this problem. Nothing is worse than the wrong and badly done color!! Yes cool when you are a warm is awful!! I didn't think that stylist could correct it because she never really offered you a resolution!!

Couldn't be more thrilled that you are happy and confident with your hair again!!!

Thanks everyone! Sihaya and Vix, I actually think I'm going to stick with my original stylist for haircuts. He is good at cutting hair and I have never had a problem with him for that. Also, he was nice about trying to fix the mess he left on my hair--I just don't think he's good at color and I don't think he really understood what to do.

I will NOT go back to him for color, although I doubt I will ever do much with color again. This was the first time in about 15 years that I had colored my hair, and I have been scared off again. I will definitely go back to the woman who corrected it for further correction (which it will need as my natural color starts growing in again). And if I ever decide to start coloring or highlighting again, she will be the one I go to!

Yea, a happy ending to a nightmare color story! Glad to hear you found a pro who was able to explain what was going on, give you options, and send you away with a great new color that enhances your skintone!

And I hope she or someone else will now be your new stylist.

I had my hair highlighted for the first time a few years ago and ended up with "hot roots" (aka hair that was one color above and another below) and looked HORRIBLE. When my then- and long-term stylist was blase about fixing it right away as well as a few weeks later, I moved on...mistakes can happen as everyone's hair is so different, but her unwillingness to fix the issue or admit some responsibility showed me it was time to go.

Anyway, I spent the next year gently color-correcting it with the help of my great NEW stylist and it was the start of a lovely partnership!

Hoping the same for you.

Steph, I am glad you found a new stylist and have found a workable solution. I hoipe your poor hair now has a chance to nourish and be "natural" for a while. are you planning on permanently changing hair stylists?

So many of you were so great with giving me advice and sympathy about my bad dye job that I wanted to come back with an update.

I spent a week shampooing my hair with Dawn dishwashing soap and clarifying shampoo (I followed up with an excellent conditioner so that my hair wouldn't dry out). After going back to my stylist again to get his opinion on what else could be done, and not feeling confident with his response, I went to a woman who had good reviews on Yelp for fixing bad dye jobs.

I went to her yesterday and she put a product on my hair that she said was designed to remove the dye, but leave whatever natural color underneath was there. She wasn't sure how much dye it would remove, but we were lucky because it got all of the wine-colored "red" out of my hair. Unfortunately, although my original stylist had told me that what he put on my hair was demi-permanent and had no ammonia or peroxide, there must have been some ammonia in it because my hair underneath was orange. The good thing about this is that it was really light, so we had options in terms of getting me back to my natural color (the color the original stylist had given me was much darker than my natural color).

The colorist put a brown gloss on my hair, but didn't leave it on for the entire time, because she didn't want me to end up too dark again. I actually think that the color looks pretty good! It's a little lighter than my natural color, and has more copper and gold in it than my hair usually does, but I'm liking it! In keeping with our discussions on color on this forum, the key here is that the new color is very warm, so it matches my skin tone. The bad dye job was VERY cool in tone, and my skin looked really yellow and sickly next to it.

Thanks everyone for the support when I was so miserable!
