Thanks for the nice comments on my hair. Some days I like it and some, not so much. It literally changes with the weather!

Oh, you natural hair is GORGEOUS. What beautiful wavy curls you have naturally. This makes me think that the first style (is that Linda Cardellini? Not her best photo but she is gorgeous and has great hair) would use your natural texture to great effect (and maybe be really low maintenance?). A beautiful tone too - if I overexposed a photo of my hair, it would look orange Yours stays a lovely rich cool-toned brown.

Beautiful!

Going forward I am considering letting my bob grow long and wear it put up in a bun or French roll. It is super easy for me and works extremely well when traveling when hair does not always get washed on a daily basis or a hair dryer is not available. I have always intended to return to this style when I am older so am not sure I am ready for this yet. Maybe I should make turbans part of my style.
I like the idea of the wavy long shag for you. I like the second and third pictures you posted. I think you can find lots of ways to wear it.

Hi Janet. I love your 2 options and they are suited for you.

As for grays, I’m in the same boat. About 3/4” of grays are spread out on my temples and sides. Not sure if I want to color (on my own) yet because I’m curious to see how gray I really am.

My current pixie has grown out into a shaggy mullety mess and am not sure what to do once everything is back to normal.

I grew it all out once, and it was way too wide on the bottom. My best cuts have been razor-cut layers, but finding someone who is skilled enough to slice it is tough, and there's no way I would attempt that on myself!

I like the idea of relaxed rocker chic hair for you, and a modern shag works!

I am still sorting out what to do with my longer curly locks. I originally considered a lob, but I currently prefer a bob parted asymmetrically. I briefly had a bob when I was in high school, parted down the middle. I like the look but think my older face needs the asymmetry. In the end, I think my best bet is to give my stylist creative license, She has cut my hair for 24 years and I like the results.

Why is it so difficult for me to find pictures of hair on Instagram/Pinterest with a similar texture, curl pattern and color? Why so many wigs!?

A shag is my favourite hairstyle. You would look amazing in that style. I am trimming my bangs every two weeks like I always did. My hair grows faster than most people. I got my hair cut in January so I am way overdue but hair salons will not be opening anytime soon. I am leaving the rest of my hair alone. I had long layers and decided to cut them off. I was left with a shoulder-length bob. It certainly is longer than shoulder- length now.

I love a wavy shag with bangs. SOOOOOOO pretty, but also a bit hard-edged. 70s rocker chic! Sexy.

I have just ordered a mini-flat iron for my now longer asymmetrical bangs because my old flat iron seems to have got lost in one of our moves. If I iron the growing out, slightly wonky layers they will lie better until I'm able to get a cut again -- it will be similar (I hope) to the longer pixie I had a few years ago. I don't know how long it will last, but I'll see. Where I go after that, I don't know -- it really depends how long the salons are closed, I guess! Knowing me, if I can't get it cut for 3 months or so, I will be desperate for a super short pixie at the end of it all!

I really like shag hair styles and can totally see that style on you! That's what I have been aiming for--one with long layers. It's pretty easy to maintain and style (or not style) and it always looks pretty much the same. The grays are coarser though and I get where you're coming from about it looking wild at times. I've been able to manage it with highlights every 4-5 months but as more grays come in--I might have to do a bit more. Love your pinterest board!

Well my hair is a big frizzy puff right now, so all I can do is dream. I think I will just let it go (as if I have a choice) and see what happens, but I am looking at a lot of wavy/curly shags right now. I hear you about not seeing enough aka any on 50+ women with grey hair.

I love your inspiration - can see you in those looks, and definitely vote you keep the multi-colors!

I was originally due to go in for "the works" this Friday - cut, color, lights, you name it. I'm fortunate that my stylist knows I hate to futz with my hair, and I don't have _that_ much gray, so I can make it work for a little while longer. If we go more than 2 more weeks, I may look into a gloss or semi-permanent rinse just to add some lift.

DD decided to home dye her lower layers purple. (She 's done it before, so not a huge shock). She still needs a cut and conditioning treatment, but the new color adds depth and make the dried out hair look more intentional.

I can see you in these cuts. No particular advice on what to do but I do think darker semi permanents can be done without too much damage if you decide to go that way.

My hair is long and wooly and with no colour since December my dark roots are evident. It was just bad timing for me with my stylist away for a month pre lockdown and I was due a cut and colour.

One of my activities has been sorting photos on my computer and seeing older hairdos has made me realise the cuts that I like and those I don't (layering, not too blunt at my chin etc...) and I also prefer to be a dark blonde rather than light blonde.

I am just leaving mine right now, the length has just got better again after being awful.

I think this is one of those things.

Janet , if you really hate the grey , don’t be too afraid to color it. Even a good box color brand (I’m not familiar with non professional brands).

If you stay in your color family , and concentrate on ROOTS only , you should have good results for a temporary fix. It will also calm the frizz and unruly-ness that grey hair can often bring.

I think the shag suits you! This type of cut will allow your natural texture to do.e out. If you want to tame the frizz, I swear by Colour Wow Dream Coat. It adds insane shine and fights friźz. I got mine on Amazon.
I did a Google images search and found some cute options.

Thanks, everyone! It sounds like we're all in a little bit of a holding pattern while we consider long-term strategies. :-)

Barbara Diane, I thought for about a minute about growing out my bangs, but I don't like my forehead ("bangs before Botox" should be my motto). My hair has lost some of it's "something" too, which is a mixed bag -- it's more manageable, but there's less of it so I've lost volume.

Gail, I share your frizz problem. I wonder if a smoothing product would help you with that -- I have found that just a little bit of Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom helps smooth my hair texture when I apply it to the ends before letting it dry, or even on dry hair.

Lisa, thanks! I started following her after seeing her on that thread the other day too. She does have some fun cuts there -- I'd choose to style them a bit differently for myself as they tend a little too boho/romantic for me, but there is some good inspiration there (I'm not a fan of center-parted bangs or too much mushroom-style volume on the top, but my hair doesn't do either of those things naturally anyway!). I always have to remind myself that styles that look fun and adorable on 20-year-olds don't often translate well on a 55-year-old! :-D

Kkards, I hear you about the grey. My husband has said, hey, why not embrace the grey coming in for now, and if I don't like it, he'll help me dye it! He's a good guy. :-)

Runcarla, yes! I love the way you embrace your curls, and what you describe does indeed work well for you. As I've gotten older, I avoid styles that put any emphasis on my jawline because it's saggy and and I have a double-chin, and I've got those marionette lines too. My solution is to keep the length a little longer, closer to shoulder length, and keep more emphasis on my eyes and the top of my face with bangs and eye makeup rather than bold lips.

MsMaven, I've always envied ladies with straight hair, but the older I get, the more accepting I am of my waves/curls. It has calmed and thinned with age. It used to be that my hair took forever to air dry, and that time has shortened now. I also find that my hair air dries much nicer when it has long layers, rather than when it was short, or back when I had it all one length in a bob (bobs are so awful on me! never ever again!). I'm not bad at trimming my bangs, thankfully. The key is to only cut a little tiny bit. You can always cut a little more, gradually! But once you cut a lot, you can't glue it back on. ;-)

Angie, I'm so scared of the salt and pepper thing with my natural hair texture -- I'm worried it will look coarse and frizzy. We'll see! I think the key is to have a really great cut and a styling strategy with good product to smooth the frizzies -- so it looks like an intentional style, and not just like I'm letting myself go. LOL

Helena, I'll share pics of what my hair is currently doing one day here soon, maybe when I have a little bit of makeup on for a change!

My husband wants me to cut his hair -- he has an electric trimmer and an idea of what he wants. I have never used one before or cut anyone else's hair ever before in my life, so it makes me nervous, but if he trusts me, I'll do it! Maybe I'll call my sister for advice -- she was a hair stylist and owned a salon for many years so I'm sure she'd have some pointers. :-)

I like the idea of these shags for you, Janet.

For myself, I was really loving my shorter cut and wanting to keep it well maintained. But if it gets to more of a shaggy bob look, I can deal with that. I imagine I will go back short again, but who knows? I guess my answer is that I'm not making plans. Ha!

Janet, I love your Pinterest board. You nailed how to go forward. Love the idea of a messy shag. Maybe salt & pepper too. LOTS of waves. Maybe some blue.

Like you, I'm growing out the shaved bit, and am nearly there. I think I will try a cheeky and wavy bob for a while. But still SHORT and showcasing my neck. Allow the one side to catch up with the rest. I can wear my hair behind my ears too, so I have options.
