@Astrid, I think layers (done well) would be great in your hair! Especially if you want to go longer. Mine is similar in texture to yours, actually, and when the layers are bad - so is the hair! Too many layers and I'm all bushy. Not enough layers and it hangs there playing dead. Bad haircuts here in FL have been my ongoing frustration with my style (or lack thereof).
Oh, and thanks for the hair compliment :)
@ Elly, funny you should mention Jen Aniston. I had a pic of her in mind with my last shorter 'do. But I more often get compared to SJP or even Alanis - go figure!
@Una, I think face shape can be tricky. I know some angles make my face very thin and narrow with pointy chin but from other angles it looks more rounded and full at the jaw. Just depends . . .

I want to grow mine longer yet! I really like your long hair in the first two pics, Mo. I think that's the length I want to go for.

I'm thinking about getting some layers, but I'm very unsure. My hair is pretty much one length, all variations are natural. I think layers would make it look more modern, but I'm afraid because the one time I got layers with longer hair it was a disaster. I thought maybe the front a bit shorter to frame my face and then some layers in the rest. What do you think?

Suz, I LOVE your pixie! You look stunning.

Una, I love your face. It is strong, with fantastic bones! I think you will look great with a cut that highlights that bone structure!

Please keep in mind that particular pixie shot is a very flattering photo. It was taken on a very happy night — I was launching my book. And the photographer was really good. I could post some more shots that would show why some people do NOT think pixies are good for people like me with longish faces and square jaws! And that maybe help explain why some people are now complimenting me on my new "softer" look.

The link that Kari posted explained exactly why my previous attempts at bobs had always been abject failures. Too much attention to my square jaw, sqared me off and gave that Frankenstein's monster look. But I have seen contemporary bobs that are angled in such a way that even though some hair is at the chin (or just below or above it) the bulk of the "weight" is at the sides around the ears/cheekbones. I fear the only way this works, though, is if the back hairline is high enough for a sharp angle. Which for me might be impossible, and maybe for you, too, from what you've said. Hmmm.

I am in the process of growing mine out. Last fall, I went from halfway down my back to about ear length. Yes, you read that correctly! Every 4-5 years I cut my hair short and then end up growing it out again.

Like you, I also wonder about my face shape at times. I *think* I am an oval, but sometimes it seems more rectangular to me. Yours seems kind of rectangular to me but I really have such a hard time deciphering shapes--whether it be facial or body.

Suz, that is an amazing and beautiful short cut!

I'm growing mine out. I cut it short (for me-- layered, and a little shorter than chin length) about a year and a half ago. It was adorable, but a huge pain. I'm learning that with my big waves/curls, shoulder-length is the shortest I can go if I want low-maintenance hair (and boy, do I!). It's shoulder length now, but I have a hankering to have it long again.

ETA: This is a very goofy pic of DH and I on a recent trip, but it's also one of the better hair pictures I have. Because my curls are so loose, my hair looks curlier the longer it gets.

Gosh, thanks, Kari! You're definitely right about secondary shape... The funny thing is I've always thought my face was round - it has changed with age, and my jawline now seems more square somehow. I would never have pegged my face shape as long. What I really want is a short easy hairstyle that looks as fab as Suz does.

(Suz, I am still reeling from how stunning you look in the pixie!)

Una, I think facial shapes are kind of like body shapes - we might have "primary" and "secondary" tendencies. If I had to guess, I'd say you're somewhere between an oblong and a pear shaped face based on this description (and with your lovely cheekbones!):
http://hairstylelounge.sheknow.....ace-shapes

I'm not sure how accurate the hair style guidelines on that page are. I'm interested to see what ideas our hair experts have for you. In terms of your ideas on the original post on this thread, you had me at "choppy angled bob." Right up my alley.

After many attempts, here is a terrible photo of me, ready for bed, tired and cranky. My eyes look really asymmetrical and different-sized too. Oh well. Although pictures like this make my face look oval, my head is narrower at the temples, so more pear shaped. Thoughts? I am not a fan of bangs on me..

I have tried that soap and mirror thing, but I come out looking like a blobl! Maybe that's my face shape.

Una - while you wait to post pics, I learned a trick: Pull back all your hair, look straight into a bathroom mirror, without moving trace the outline of your face with a bar of soap, step back and see what shape you drew!

Anyway, it worked nicely for me (an oval) and others, and it might work out for you. . .

Suz - your pixie was adorable! I get the need for variety, but that's a great alternative anytime!!

I'm thinking of going longer again, but undecided about bangs. Been growing them out *painfully* for half a year now. Sigh. Here's longer about 2 or 3 years back.

Thanks, again, Aida and Yellowgirl!

Aida, I've worn it with all bang lengths, yup. I like Emma's cut. Of course she is young and gorgeous, which helps!

In the 80s I briefly had an almost shaved Sinead O'Connor look, then I had punky spiky top and bangs. I've had it with longer top, short sides. I've had it textured and more flat. I've had it red and various shades of blonde.

Right now I get TONS of compliments from people on my hair. I think it is partly because they are not used to it on me. They say it looks "softer" and "more feminine." Some of this is just from people who really don't get short hair; I don't pay too much attention to that. But some might be from people who actually know a thing or two, like my hairdresser, who is quite fond of this longer look (and has seen it both ways).

I am thinking about going short-- or shorter at least. I have fairly dark, straight fine and now thin hair. This is the second year it has been long, and prior to that I hadn't worn it long since I was 12. Generally the only way I like it past my shoulders in in a long shag of sorts but I let to grow a bit and now am being pressured to keep it long by my family.

But a perma-bun isn't a good look.

Is that you, Suz? You look like a movie star! Sharon Stone but younger. That cut is made for you!

I have a low hairline on my neck as well. I have resorted to clippers to maintain a short cut in back! Because my hair is dark and straight, getting it to show any texture is the biggest issue. I always want it to look piece-y and messy, but it ends up all neat and smooth somehow. My hairdresser is fab, if only she would come live with me and do my hair every day.

Part of my problem is that I can't figure out my face shape! I need to post a straight on picture here for opinions.

I think you should take off a few inches at a time, until you hit a length you really like. Otherwise you'll be forced to wait for growout. The only reason I chopped all my hair at once was to donate it.

I'm trying to grow my hair to approximation of this:

http://www.undertheradarmag.co....._are_over/

With a center part, cowlicks, side parts and bangs don't work on me. I was looking through some old pictures of me taken by my dad. I look better with longer hair. I don't have refined or classically beautiful features suitable for a short do. Bangs work with work because my hair is never in my eyes so I don't have to brush it aside mid exam. Also I take my showers at night, so my hair has to look good with bedhead.

I, too, am thinking of cutting mine. It's really not a question of "if" but of "when." I ALWAYS revert to short. But I'm hesitating now. This is the longest it has been for a decade, and actually the nicest "longish" (really mid-length) style I think I've ever had. It seems to drag me down less than the others because of some clever layering.

Una, like you I'm contemplating a bob. The last time I had a bob it was NOT a success because it was too straight across; I have a squarish jaw and I thought it made me look like Frankenstein's monster. But I now wonder if with some layers and angling it might work well and give me back the "edge" and modernity I feel that my softer, wavier hair detracts from.

I tend to revert so often to very classic preppy clothing, maybe especially now as I'm rebuilding a closet from scratch and need some basics. With my short pixie I feel that I still had a little style quotient; with the longer hair I feel I'm missing something quirky that is "me."

But I still worry that the bob wouldn't suit me or would be hard for me to manage. One issue is that my hairline in the back is rather low, so angling it in the right way (without that choppy appearance in back) might be difficult.

Below one version of my old pixie from about 3 years ago. I guess I can always revert to that.

Una, I do still love my long hair but it's just TOO too long right now! Unfortunately for me, my hair isn't very strong so really this is far longer than it should be and I'm losing a lot more of it than I'd like. So I'm thinking, shoulder length, possibly even some long bangs (though I think I'm too lazy to maintain that right now). There was a cute 'do in an ad back in one of the spring mags, I'll have to see if I can dig it up.

I have a friend who did an almost-reverse angled bob and it looks fab! Kind of retro, kind of modern. Very fun.
