@lisa p - I went through menopause 4 years ago, and I’ve noticed a bit of receding hairline at the temples this past year. It doesn’t seem to be progressing, but it is enough that I’m experimenting with changing up where I part my hair! I take an all purpose multivitamin and notice my nails are healthier - so I wonder if it has an impact on hair?

LIsap, seen in a very different context but might be interesting to investigate, Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder? I have no experience with it myself but since it acts more as a cosmetic than a supplement I think it probably can do no harm?

Lisa, I am done with hormone therapy as I am likely to hsve a stroke of heart attack due to the diabetes. Because of vagiinal dryness I was perscribed a vaginal cream that has become a pill that I only take 3 times a week. If I stop my hair starts falling out. My doctors oked the tiny amount of estrogen in each dose. I also need it for the original reason. My endocrinologist is in favor of the slight protection it gives my bones. I hope this is not TMI but it may help someone dealing with one of these aspects of aging. I NEVER expected to have any of these problems.

HI Lisa, I'm right there with you, especially with the empty temples. I don't have any good solutions...age, genetics, and hormones aren't things we can do a lot about.

I did try Rogaine when it first started. I didn't continue it because I was getting irritation from it and didn't see enough good results to make it worth it. It makes sense that the irritation damage to the scalp skin would just cancel out any good it might be trying to do, but that's just me...allergic contact dermatitis.

I have been using the Vegamour that AndiB mentioned since March. I don't feel like it has made any impact in regrowth but it has definitely slowed down the loss. My hairdresser said my hair looked stronger and more healthy.

I'm tempted by one of the laser gadgets but haven't bought one yet.

My grandmother and mother have gone through this process, and honestly, in my opinion, they didn't manage it in the right manner. First of all, I would suggest you to go with forehead cuts and don't stretch your hairs from the forehead.

Secondly, if we talk about menopause then yes, it lowers the growth of hair production because it affects the rate of production of two hormones oestrogen and progesterone. In this case, it is usually recommended to talk with GP, and he/she can suggest iron and other vitamin supplies with a blood test. However, if the blood test goes normal, then usually minoxidil is recommended by GP, especially if you have baldness history in the family.

By the way, I also noticed that many ladies also don't take care of their scalp and only pick hair treatments for hairs only. Better to use any natural oil which should also be good for the scalp. I found this Batana oil ( https://www.batanaful.com/coll.....batana-oil ) helpful for my greasy hair and dry scalp, and you can also pick a good but a pure one. Secondly, stop using heating tools, hot showers and sulfate shampoos. They all could be harmful to your hair. Also, look at your diet and see what you need to eat, and you need to avoid. In my opinion, age should only be a number, and we should try our best to look younger.

Lisa, I’ve lost about a quarter of my hair due to menopause. It is devastating, considering that I have fine, thin hair. I now try to regrow it. I just finished a bottle of multi peptide serum for hair from the Ordinary. I see lots of baby hair, not sure though if it’s due to the Ordinary. But can’t hurt, right? And price is low, I like the brand. I also added vitamin D, iron and zinc supplements. Also, I’m using Olaplex #3 but don’t know if it works, yet. A lot of good reviews for this brand. Both available from Sephora.

Lisa, I have been feeling something similar. I think I have a bit of hypothyroidism but not enough to show in blood tests(although I do have nodules) and I can see my hair thinning and baring my scalp.
I have recently started taking an over the counter thyroid vitamin supplement and if nothing else it has made my energy levels go up. I have also started taking biotin and will add some collagen.
I am almost 46 so I might be perimenopausal and all this COVID situation didn't help with stress levels.
I am sure this is just a phase and we will find a solution.

Lisa P, about the self reported low thyroid symptoms but the repeated blood tests show normal thyroid levels. That human glitch runs in my family.
Conventionally, just the thyroid hormone levels are tested, but you might have thyroid antibodies (Hashimoto’s Disease). I would encourage you to read a Functional Medicine book on the subject and if you do have antibodies, find a functional or integrative medicine specialist to work with.

I might start with Izabella Wentz’s thyroid book but Dr. Sara Ballantyne, Dr. Amy Myers or Dr. Datis Kharrazian all have books on alternative thyroid treatments.

Conventional Medicine doesn’t treat Hashimoto’s until much later in the Disease process. Functional Medicine sees this differently and will test and treat earlier.

Lisa I know Krishna used Rogaine on her hair and bought the men’s product as it was the same formulation as the women’s product but cheaper. She ended up stopping when she got into wearing wigs. You may find her old posts on thinning hair useful. My hair shed terribly after pregnancy and eventually returned to normal, hopefully this is just a temporary situation.

You and your hair always look fab but I understand how stressful it is to lose hair volume and wonder about how bad it is going to get.

I can relate with this as well — this year it seems I’ve been shedding at a greater rate, and I’ve been worried about my scalp showing through as well. A worry that is compounded by letting the grey hair grow out — I think the grey can look like bare scalp a little too easily on some of us. I was also starting to research the issue.

When I had my hair cut two weeks ago, I asked my stylist if he noticed a significant difference or thinning and he did not. But he pointed out that my hair hasn’t been dyed in seven months and dyeing plumps up the hair shaft, making the hair feel thicker. I calmed down a little after that, but I’m also on the road now, camping and paying almost no attention to my appearance.

I take biotin supplements a few times a week, so not sure that’s doing anything. My hair grows fast; my nails are super strong and healthy, so it doesn’t appear there is anything else going on with me other than post-menopausal change (it’s now seven years since my hysterectomy so I’m firmly past any menopausal symptoms, I can’t even remember my last hot flash).

I hope you find some answers!

Hey Lisa - sorry to hear you are going through this. I know how you feel. I have posted about my hair loss saga - https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....ikken-long

It's been almost 2 years, and I continue to use Harklinikken daily. Since the heavy shedding after I had surgery in 2018 calmed down, I have not had another incident of unusual hair loss. My battle started 10 years ago, in my late 40's at the onset of perimenopause. I do have a thyroid condition, and the hormonal imbalance was terrible, and my sole menopausal symptom was hair loss.

Downsides - cost, and it's a daily thing though I do not find it a burden. I do not know what would happen if I stopped using it, and eventually will schedule an appointment to review the options for long term maintenance.

I have had the same thoughts as Suz - why did no one ever talk about these aspects of aging?

Hope this is useful.

Your hair does always look amazing to my eye. Always very polished and chic. I am sorry that you are experiencing this, and I suspect that I am experiencing something similar. My forehead seems to look bigger and bigger! But I do now use a spray for the roots when the colour is growing out, because I reckon that the very light grey roots) do make it look thinner.

I have a friend who has beautiful long hair, but has had years of illness. She has Rograine, shipped from the US because the strength of it is so much stronger. It has made an amazing difference. She started using it in early March, and even our hairdresser really noticed the difference. Fingers crossed. Nodding on the financial commitment to it - it is pricey.

Taylor, thank you. I was hoping you would see this post. My hair isn't shedding per se:it just seems to be thinning near the temples very noticeably. I don't see hair in the shower after washing or anything, but with short hair it tends not to be as noticeable when that happens anyways. I think I'm going to buy some Rogaine and see how it goes. At $50+ for a month's use though, I'm not sure I can sustain that financial commitment forever.

Suz -I suspect it is menopausal. At least I hope it's that simple. My hair stylist suggested laying off the heat styling and colouring, and to try taking a supplement like HairForce.

Taylor's words should come as a balm -- she's got the experience to back it up!

I had a friend who had alopecia when we were younger. (Different problem, I know, but similar result.) It was so hard for her emotionally -- as StyleFan suggests -- you get stressed and it starts and then you're more stressed about the hair, and then it gets worse! And people telling you to stop stressing out is very stressful!

The obvious culprit is a menopausal thing, but it might be helpful to get it checked out to find out for sure if that is the cause.

Your hair always looks terrific, Lisa. Truly. It might be a question of figuring out a slightly different way of wearing it as things adjust.

These changes of aging can come as a shock, though, and that is hard. I sometimes wonder why my mother didn't warn me about this or that...or, more likely she did and I wasn't paying attention.

Overall hair loss is usually always related to menopause. Increased androgens (male hormones ) along with decreased female harmonies , shrink hair follicles .
i have seen this for decades with clients. The good news is it seems to stabilize quickly(In my opinion from what I have witnessed ) and doesn’t progress like male pattern baldness. Although I have seen something like that in women , but it’s rare.
I don’t have any great words of advice, none of my clients shed enough to want to use Rogaine. Hormone shifts after childbirth can cause similar concern .

The good news is , it should stabilize quickly and not progress .

I know about Rogaine, but have not seriously investigated it.My understanding is that once you start using it, you can't really ever stop and hope to maintain the benefits. Off to do some on-line research.

I'll be 60 on my next birthday (how did THAT happen???) and had very early menopause, pretty much done by late 40's with very few symptoms. Save for thinning hair. My hair has always been fine, but in last maybe 4 years it seems to be shedding fast. I also decided to go grey in COVID - no color since February, and I kinda love it. I've only had one hair cut in that time, too. I've been wearing it in a asym bob for the last few years, but with reduced shaping cuts (every 6 weeks cut and color in the olden days) it is lank, and I mostly wear it up in a high curly bun. Wearing it up also reduces the demarcation line between old color and the new silver. I tried Rogaine, but maybe didn't stay with it long enough. I just finished one month of Vegamour, a product that is supposed to prevent hair loss (doesn't make claims about regrowth, but honestly I'd be happy to have it quit falling out!) and I literally just ordered a 6 month subscription. If it doesn't work I'm out $150, if it does, by god I'll buy it for the rest of my life! It applies like a Rogaine but is supposedly more natural.

I have a hair cut tomorrow, and can't wait!

My hair is my thing too. When I am stressed, I lose large amounts of hair, and then I get more stressed. The last couple of years have been terrible for me, and I started researching ways to stop hair loss. I even considered buying one of those laser things that you wear. Dr. Dray and Angie on Hot and Flashy (YouTube channels) review them.
Biotin made my hair grow faster but not thicker. My hair already grows fast enough. I didn't see the point of it for me.
My sister-in-law uses Rogaine and swears by it. It does make your hair dirty, and she has to wash it every day, but she doesn't care. I think you can buy it over the counter. It is probably the same product that Jasmine is referring to.
Hair loss can be devastating. I have calmed myself down, but it still bothers me. I hope you find something that helps.
