That's almost exactly like the one I use to blowdry my hair straight as well.

Nicole, it was humid here today and my hair didn't frizz as much. Maybe the ice water did work! That and I put a bunch of hair goo in it. But I think it looks nice and is still pretty bouncy. The water doesn't get too too cold here, but it's a bit shocking when you go straight from hot to the coldest setting. I'm going to keep doing it though and see what happens. Thanks for the tip!

Yes I agree with Maya's point. I had to try several different round brushes before I found the right one. The barrel of the brush has to be really big, and the bristles are very short and hard. They actually hurt if you wrap your hand around them. The brushes with the little plastic ball shaped doots on the end, didn't work as well for me. The one I use is similar to this: (the largest one)

Maya makes a good point about a big round brush with coarse bristles. That's what I use on my hair and it works great, and a concentrator nozzle.

Wow, I'm going to have to make a list of things to ask the hair stylist about: Bumble and Bumble, drying my hair with a round brush, volumizeing sprays, etc.

I used to get my hair cut for free at Bumble and Bumble. If they couldn't accommodate me for whatever reason, they would compensate by giving me free products. So I have the thickening spray and hair lotion and together, they make for a fabulous blowdry. But I couldn't afford them both if I actually had to pay! I really like Aveda's products. They're better than drugstore brands, but not as pricey as B&B.

Sarah, blowdrying the fuzzies out requires tension. You need a large round brush or a paddle brush to hold your hair straight and smooth as you blowdry. A concentrator nozzle helps too. I can't really explain well online how to do it, but your stylist will show you.

I second it for the Bumble and Bumble spray. They are using and selling it at the Gene Juarez Salons in Seattle so there is a possibility you can buy it at your local salon. That might be the product that has changed my hair since I switched salons. The other product I started using at the same time is a Gene Juarez product and it is a creme that you put on wet hair, work through and leave in to protect it and condition it. After that, spray the Bumble and Bumble on the roots and blow dry like Ana describes. I noticed lately that hair sylists are teaching clients to blow dry their hair instead of doing the job and turning the client loose to figure it out for themselves.
Living in the cold Seattle area I couldn't rinse in cold water for anything. I do remember though growing up in Sothern California doing that just because it felt good and like Nicole says the water doesn't really get that cold in the pipes.
Good luck with your hair Sarah. It feels so good to know that your hair is in style with the rest of you. Doesn't always happen with me but I keep trying and I'm getting better at it.

You would have to buy it at a Bumble and Bumble Salon. Go to this site, and click "store locator" at the top, and then type in your zip code and it will tell you where the nearest one is.

http://www.bumbleandbumble.com/

It's kind of expensive, I think about $22 or so for the larger size bottle, but it seriously lasts me forever, you don't need that much. You spray it on the roots and then blowdry them in sort of the opposite direction they grow. Does this make sense? I don't flip my head over because that makes my hair more frizzy. You don't have to have a hair appointment at the salon either, you can just go in and buy it at the front desk most of the time.

The Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion is really good too. It's like a mineral/conditioning spray that is really light weight (good for fine hair) that protects your hair from heat damage.

Wimps! I just take the ice cold water. You get used to it, and when you're done you feel so refreshed--and it makes your bathroom feel warm! (at least that's what I tell myself.) I actually have to trick myself, I slowly go from hot to warm, and then a little cooler, and then cooler, until it's as cold as I can get it. Going from hot to ice cold is painful.

Nicole, I have been trying that, and I am just too much of a wimp. I can't even stand 10 seconds in cold water. That usually makes the top of my head cold, but the ends of my hair still feel hot. I think the problem is my shower isn't really big enough to just blast my head. My whole body gets soaked in ice cold water, which is not a nice feeling.

For those of you with frizzy hair--don't forget to rinse your hair in cold water--as cold as you can stand it, for as long as it takes your hair that is underneath to feel cool. I usually rinse in cold for about 30 - 45 seconds. It really does make a difference in taming the frizz.

My hair is dry and can look like straw. I had pretty much given up and blamed the texture on the fact that we have well water. The hair stylist even said to me that she could tell I washed my hair with well water because of the texture and that when she put color on it the coloring agent turned a different tint. The problem is the minerals in the water.
However I recently changed hair stylists and I think this one is doing something in the color and cut, or it is their brand of products that are working better for me. My hair is behaving better since the switch. I'm going to Gene Juarez Salon if you are in the Seattle area. Gary Manual is another good one.

This is great, Sarah. I think shoulder length with layers would be really cute, and cutting layers will take some of the weight off your hair, so it might not be as flat. I have very fine hair as well, and it's frizzy. Coloring helps give it a little volume, but I use an anti-frizz serum and it really helps with the frizz. With your fine hair you don't want anything too heavy, because it will weigh it down. Ask whichever stylist you choose about anti-frizz products and how to use them. They make SUCH a difference.

Looking forward to the pictures!

OK, so everybody says it's high time I stop perming my hair. Got it. I just hope lairs will give it enough body. My hair is so flat and looks really thin without curl. Also, it won't hold curl for more than 15 minutes without a perm. So those are two other reasons I've kept it permed for so long.

I always let the old perm grow out first. That's why I let it grow to waist length. Then I have it chopped off to shoulder length and permed. So the hair that's getting permed has not been permed before. This time I'll try getting it cut without the perm. The worst that can happen is that it will look bad and I'll need to get a perm again later. I think I'll hold off on the coloring for now.

Maya, my hair is fuzzy weather I let it dry naturally or use a blow-dryer.

Nicole, it is good to hear that my hair texture could have changed by now. I certainly hope it has. I know it's still very fine, because ponytails always slide down my hair. All of the perm is bellow shoulder length, so cutting that off shouldn't make it too short. I like your idea of spending extra time with a stylist to discuss what I'm going for.

By "princess hair" I don't mean Disney princess; I mean something like Arwen in Lord of the Rings. Like this: http://www.lovelylivtyler.com/.....038;page=4
However, I'm probably still a bit too old to be going for that look, no matter how much my husband likes it.

Shiny, I've tried a flat iron and it doesn't help much, and like you said it is damaging in the long run. Thanks for the tip about the lotion. I haven't liked the de-frizzing product I tired, but I'll ask about other ones. The one I tired just made my hair look flat and oily on top and frizzy at the ends, which is how it already looks. So the product just made my problems worse.

Dani, I like the idea of setting up a consultation first. I actually have a couple of stylists I'm considering. Hopefully there is a product that will help solve my frizz problem.

Anna, your right about there being an idea length. I'd go so far as to say there is probably and ideal length for each person, and that that changes with age. Just like long fingernails, there is a point when long hair can become extreme and ridiculous.

Thanks again ladies. In conclusion, I will probably get my hair cut shoulder length with lairs. Someday I may do color, but not this time around. And I'll be sure to take before and after pictures.

I agree with Dani (dixiegirl) that setting up a consultation would be a good idea. If you have been perming your hair, it might be too damaged to color at this point--a good stylist will let you know and will also "strongly discourage" you from doing it, they may even refuse. I think Nicole makes good suggestions and I like her suggestion about getting a haircut for a "queen." I am a fan of longer hair (on me personally), but there is an "ideal" length, and I really think no longer than bra strap length, depending on face shape, etc. and I agree with Nicole that there is a point where it's just too long and not flattering anymore. It does take a lot of time to manage my long hair though, and that's a choice I consciously made. Remember that shorter styles can take a lot of time to maintain as well if the cut goes against your natural hair. A good stylist should be able to give you a cut that fits with your lifestyle and hair type/texture.

Sarah,

There's a lot of good advice here and I don't have much to add other than you might try setting up a consultation with the person you are considering to cut your hair. That way you can just talk about ideas in a non decision making moment and then have time to mull things over a bit.

Shiny is correct in that there are a lot of products out there to help with frizz. Perming is not the solution. It might be nice to give your hair a chemical break and just let it have a chance to recover. You could always do some highlights around your face to give a different look and that wouldn't be as rough on your hair as all over color. My own personal opinion is to hold off on all over color until I just have too much grey to deal with. Your hair is better off the less you treat it or chemically alter it (IMO).

Blowdry with the nozzle pointed down the hair shaft -that will minimize frizz. And a flat-iron does wonders for frizz (though does damage so you end up with more frizz, ultimately!). There are also all sorts of products to help with frizz - ask the stylist to recommend. I also find that basic hand lotion works well - just rub some on your hands and then *lightly* run over your hair.

I didn't know your hair was all the way to your waist!! My DD's have had their hair that long. My suggestion? Go longer than shoulder length - even just an inch.

Beware: that suggestion is probably based on my own envy of women who can grow their hair longer than shoulder length though!!! My hair just won't do it. As soon as it starts grazing my shoulders, it starts breaking off.

Hair color: I don't know. I'm no expert. But I do think that hair color changes the texture in a good way; at least it does with mine.

Ok, if you have been perming your hair for 8 years, it's time to stop and see what it's like on its own. Your hair texture and managability can change over time. (I used to have very thin fine hair, and it has gotten thick and wavy over the last 5 or 6 years.) Coloring will also change the texture of your hair. Also, if you have always gone to "a friend of the family", then your hair problems may have been stylist induced.

How short are you willing to go? You may need to cut off a lot of the permed hair and start with a fresh simple cut while the rest of the perm grows out. There is a fine line where long hair becomes "too long" and the woman looks dated and meek. Knowing that your hair is not naturally curly, then I'd say cut it to just a few inches below your shoulder (or at your shoulder if you're willing to go that short). Have some long layers put in, from your jawline to the ends. Find a qualified, experienced stylist and when you make your appt with them, ask for a little extra time to discuss your hair's needs and products that you can use.

I wouldn't do any coloring yet. Keep it simple until you are comfortable with the new length. (It will take some time to get used to seeing yourself in shorter hair). Also, at 5'2", you really shouldn't be wearing your hair that long. You say you like your "princess hair", but you're not a little girl anymore. Look for a hair style fit for the queen, and leave the princess hair for the little girls.

Your hair sounds very similar to mine Sarah. Mine is definitely healthier and fuller with all the layering my stylist did, also much easier to maintain. I do miss long hair sometimes but I definitely don't miss all the fussing I had to do with it.

I would definitely stop perming it though. It's probably making the problem worse by weakening your hair. I find the best thing to do is to work with the hair you have. Also ask your stylist about what products they use and how they finish your hair. Most stylists will be happy to teach you how to do your hair at home. I find that no matter how long or short my hair is, I can't let it dry naturally. It just turns into a fuzzball, as you said. I have to blowdry it to help keep it smooth.

Thanks for the advice ladies.

First of all, I should say that my hair is not naturally curly. I should have made that clear in the first place. I've been getting perms once a year since I was 14. (Yes it grows that slowly.) The reason I keep getting it permed is that my hair is fine, frizzy, and unmanageably tangley. When it's straight I have a hallo of fuzz no matter what I do to it, so 8 years ago I gave up and got a perm to hide the fuzz and I've done it that way every since.

I've actually gone thought a few hair styles. When I was a kid I kept it chin length with thick bangs. Sometimes I let it grow out quite long (still with bangs), but it was always unmanageable and took ages to dry. Then I got a short curly Shirley Temple-ish cut, which I hated and grew it out to the chin length cut again, but without bangs. Finally I gave up and got a new perm. I've done the perm anywhere from shoulder length to hair past my waist since then. I love the look of my "princess hair", but it takes over 30 minutes to dry. And the worst part is that I'm finding myself wearing it up almost all the time, like Shiny said. If I don't it gets caught in things (like screws on the back of school desks) and tears. That's not fun and it doesn't look good.

I don't have a real "stylist" at the moment. Lately I've been going to see a lady who is a friend of the family. Her mom was a beautician and taught her. She doesn't charge much, but I should probably look for a professional hair stylist. I used to go to a professional, but my mom thought she charged too much and we switched, now I can certainly make that choice for myself though. And like Maya said, hair is not a thing to go cheap on.

I had to laugh at being called the "tall and slim" Sarah too, since I'm only 5'2", but yes that's me Shiny. I'm the one with the long skirts. The ponytail consideration is a good one, but right now I've been pulling it back all the time, and I don't like that. I don't want to chop it though, not until I'm old enough that long hair looks silly. I'm glad you think my long hair suits me. I'd just like to have slightly shorter "long" hair right now, like to my shoulders instead of to my waist. And I think I want lairs this time. I've tried a color once before. Since I have the complexion of a red head I did an auburn dye. I'm willing to try something new though. What color would you suggest?
