Thanks Nicole. I had forgotten abut makeupalley.com. Great resource.

Thanks Elly. I have gone through a pretty lengthy high stress period so that may be a contributor.

Christianne, I have read too much protein can be bad. I needed the reminder as I was considering using the Joico again today. (I tried it yesterday after I posted).

Kiwi and Mo, I have been trying to up the healthy fats in my diet the last few weeks and seem to feel good so perhaps my hair will appreciate it too.

Thanks VC, I appreciate the recommendations very much. I think I will try the Kerastase or Redken next.

This isn't really a treatment product, but it helps my hair look better (fine, bone straight, prone to flyaways, damaged from hard water, yadda yadda yadda):

http://www.kerastase-usa.com/_.....rmique.htm

It's ridiculously expensive for a hair product (note: one tube lasts and lasts...I think I buy one every eight months or so), so I would recommend looking around for a trial size or 'travel size' if you can, so you can sort of try before you buy. After shower/bath, comb hair, put a dime-sized amount of this stuff in your hand, smear/spread a wee bit across both hands, and slick/smooth through your wet hair before blow-drying/styling. This product doesn't work very well unless you use it before heat-styling.

The Kerastase Cimente Thermique stuff is sort of a leave-in conditioner, but feels more like a styling product. The bonus is that it does *not* weigh my straight, fine hair down at all, while still smoothing/glossing or whatever. It doesn't make my hair greasy or flat, while still smoothing it nicely.

Also, a few years ago - I bought Redken "Extreme". It also worked well to help my hair after staying in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere, way up north (well-water):

http://www.redken.com/products.....-anti-snap

Same concept as the Cimente Thermique - slick some through your hair, post-shower, before styling. Leave-in, don't rinse.

Those are two things I've tried that do help. That said, I went and looked up Joico K-Pak reconstructor, and it has very good reviews on makeupalley, amazon and all kinds of places, so it might be worth a try!

Alternatively, next time you go to the hair salon for a trim or what have you, ask for a 'treatment' post-shampoo - usually a deep conditioning mask/treatment or perhaps could even be one of those protein treatments too. I've done this a few times, and while I'm not sure what it is that they're using, it sure makes a difference (for weeks and weeks too).

If you want really amazing smoothing shampoo or conditioner, try Tigi's S-Factor. For an incredible deep conditioner, try S-Factor "Serious" Conditioner. In the meantime, the "Smoothing" shampoo and conditioner are fabulous (for regular use I mean...the "Serious" conditioner is very intense conditioning and is to be used on just a once-in-awhile basis).

http://www.tigihaircare.com/co.....egoryID=15

http://www.tigihaircare.com/co.....egoryID=15

http://www.amazon.com/TIGI-Fac.....B000EMDKG0

I would try the S-Factor Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner first - you might be pleasantly surprised at how glossy, but non-greasy it makes your hair. The "Serious" conditioner is a 'nice to have' for once in awhile. Meanwhile, the two styling products I mentioned (the Kerastase Cimente Thermique and the Redken Extreme Anti-Snap) are also handy. I'd start with the S-Factor shampoo/conditioner first though, and see if that helps.

Good luck and let us know what you end up trying that works/doesn't work.

I have used the Nexxus Emergencee protein repair mask and really liked it. You have to be cautious with protein though and not overdo it (I liked the results so much that I used it too often plus didn't realize my shampoo and conditoner had protein - it made my hair feel "crunchy" with protein overload).

Makepalley is great for haircare recommendations.
I have fine hair as well. I have used some jojoba oil lightly in my hair at night then washed the next day for extra conditioning and it works pretty well.

Honestly, I don't know if your hair is much like mine (yours may be heat damage from styling or damage from coloring) but my fine hair generally is very hard to damage . . . but only when I'm healthy. I cut mine recently because the length was from a stressful/less than healthy part of my life and it didn't seem like there was anything that could keep it looking good. Other times I've had silky healthy waist length hair--- is it possible a gluten allergy might be affecting you? if you digestion is wonky your hair is going to be even easier to damage.

The only thing i've done is Jojoba Oil. I have fine hair too but it's also very dry (if i put nothing in it after i shower i can get away with 3 days until it even looks slightly greasy) so what works for me might not work for you.

You could go on makeupalley.com and look up reviews of different hair masks and products? That's what i do before i make a beauty related purchase.

What particularly are you finding not healthy-looking about it? Like ends with fly aways or something more?

Not yet. I looked at a few but just didn't know what to buy. Do you have any favorites. My hair is quite fine which I understand works well for protein enriched products.

Hi all, I am debating whether to get a really short haircut or keep it longer. One of the main reasons for me to go short is that I find it stays so much healthier looking. I read about using protein treatments and decided to give it a try. I asked for recommendations and got K-PAK deep penetrating reconstructor but haven't tried it yet.

Does anyone have favorite products or recommendations?
