Until recently I always parted it on the right, where it likes to be naturally. Well, completely natural would be a hair lick in the front, just off-center and then the rest to the right of that. Okay I also had several years in college of parting in the middle, but let's skip that. Lately I have been enjoying the way a zig-zag part looks, especially when I am between haircuts and need to distribute the volume (I think I have similar hair to you, Janet.), but I feel a little uncomfortable all day, like my hair is out of place. I think I need to get used to it. I have been thinking about this lately, so thanks for the thread.

Now that my hair is short I do play with the part and for the same reasons as Elisabeth mentions I wish I had changed the part whilst it was long! I do remember attempting to change my part but it felt heavy and almost itchy.

I think you're "supposed to" change your part every now and then to avoid thinning hair (or this may just be an old wives' tale). But I never do it! Instead, I sometimes leave my hair unparted, like Suz, for a more tousled effect.

I have, but it doesn't want to at first. I think when it's longer it 'takes' better than when I have bangs. But I usually only flip it over like that for a day at a time to add volume more than anything. In high school I parted down the middle, and feathered, since it was the 80's. I moved it to the far left side at about 18 and recently, at about 40, moved it closer to above my left pupil and not so far over. I have contemplated switching to the right side for some of the reasons Nicole mentioned, eyebrows, eyeshape, heck even sun damage that is greater on my 'exposed' side.

I do, sometimes. My hairdresser told me that you should change up your part once in a while to prevent stressing the hair near the part too much (both in terms of physical stress and sun damage). I pretty much randomly choose a side to part it on, although since I tend to sleep on my hair wet, sometimes it chooses for me. My natural part is in the middle but I prefer to part it to the side, so it's often a little messy and crooked, but it doesn't bother me.

My hairdresser always does this cool zigzag part which is supposed to provide more lift and volume, but I don't really have the patience to do anything more than run a brush through my hair!

I don't. My reasoning for sticking to the side i have is because i was hiding a more difficult eyebrow (i seriously have awful eyebrows. I literally groom them into submission.). But I must of been hurting it's feelings because over time it's actually become my better eyebrow..and my eye is slightly larger/more rounded on the side the bang kind of covers. I have no idea what this means/if i should flip sides...just things i've noticed over time. Maybe i'll ask my hair stylist next time i go in...

My part falls naturally down the middle. If I air dry I let it be. When I blow dry I go to the left to change up the look. I find the left has mroe lift than when I try to shift it to the right side.

I used to switch it around for volume. Sometimes I still switch it up a bit. Rarely from one side to the other, but occasionally no part at all, just all tousled.

Even if I wanted to change how I part my hair it would never allowed me to do so. My hair is very stubborn and it si basically parts itself - on the left. I don't mind it really as I have more hair on the lft side of my head than on the right (maybe due to sleeping on the right side?) and patring on the left makes them more even.

My hair grows out from just above the left of my forehead. There's a center point and all the shafts of hair grow away from it. If I ever had a bald spot, that's where it would start from. There's a word for this but I can't remember it right now.

I part my hair in the center for a look with mild volume.. I part my hair on the right for a more voluminous look because the hair will stand away from my head when going over the center growth. If I part on the left, the hair lies flat so then I'll clip it up on the right for a 50's- ish look.

So, yes, I definitely experiment with different parts depending on the look I want.

Janet, it's funny you should ask, because I've been wondering about whether I should switch sides for my part -- because I've noticed that there are fewer fine lines around the eye that's often partially obscured by my hair! However, I find it uncomfortable to have the part on the 'wrong' side. I do change my part, depending on my hairstyle, but it varies from slightly left to very left. I never do it centre or right.

How do you know which eye is the most expressive one?

I'm overdue for a visit to the hair salon, so I was figuring out what to do with my hair after I showered today, and I decided to leave it curly and flip the part over from my left to the right. I only tend to do that as my hair grows out and the wave starts to do funky things -- it seems to give a little extra lift to my hair. I don't change my part often, but I started wondering if it's very common to change it at all!

Do you ever change it up, and if so, why? I know some people always part their hair in the middle, but the women that flatters are few and far between (my features are way too asymmetrical to pull that off well). Or do you always stick with parting on the same side?

What are the rules about the most flattering way to part your hair? Once I heard a theory that you should part above your most expressive eye. Does that make sense?
