I'm on team "go low maintenance" for now. At least here in the US the cases are rising dramatically, so I expect they'll start shutting things down again.
You have great curls, definitely can't picture the straighter styles working as well!

Well although no one is talking about shutting things down here, I am not ready to commit to a short cut just yet.

Very late to this but you have had good advice. I agree that your hair is where you have added edge to your looks and if you feel too classic you might feel off.

What looks good can differ from what feels good as well. You do have stunning hair so it pretty much always looks fantastic.

I think part of this feeling is frustration with the pandemic and uncertainty about the future. It is very challenging.

Hi again Shevia —

Well you are VERY far from “boring and predictable” so you certainly can’t run around with your current cut if it makes you feel that way!

“Short and bold” seems like a winner from my angle. Looking forward to the debut of whatever ends up calling your name!

Thank you all so much!
Vildy I have tried many curl products over the years and absolutely nothing works for my hair like Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier by Tigi. I just finger comb it through my hair and it eventually dries like this.
Laurie Letting it grow out is basically what I think I will do, because of the reasons you state!
JAileen - Thank you!
Thank you taylor! I did wear it that way for a long time, but it requires regular cuts or the short side doesn't look right. Until I feel sure that is possible, I am trying to find a less cut needy look.
Suz - Thank you! I am trying to wait it out so that the short side gets long enough to go down rather than out, if you know what I mean .
slim cat - Thank you! That was really my cut for years with the short side going from super short to just short. But I sort of want a shut down ready look for now .
sylvie55 - I need to get some stronger gel and start playing.
avicennia - Thank you!
Vix - "That length technically LOOKS fine, but makes me feel both conservative and perky and I really dislike it." Yes! Substitute boring and predictable and that's me now. Am considering going short and bold.
madeline - Thank you for the gorgeous inspo pictures!
Runcarla - Thank you!! I am so glad you wrote with your curly hair insight and brilliant inspo pictures. I love #1 but am not sure my hair is up to it, #5 is where I think I am headed, #6 is great but my curls tend to start at a longer length. Or maybe I am just not cutting/styling right? Love the super short one, but not ready to go there in the current situation. Thank you again!
Phoebe - That is so nice, thank you!
Angie Thank you for that sweet compliment! And you got me! I want a hair project! I love your inspiration pictures, but am not sure my hair is curly enough for some of those looks. Am examining!

I’ve had the pic below as a constant on my Pinterest hair board (I keep it edited to 50 images) and I did have something like this in 2016. The back and sides were cut very short and the top/front was grown quite long. I kept it symmetrical, but did favour a side part. It worked well when I was training hard for triathlon, and I really liked it, but it wasn’t as dramatic as the photo due to my overall low contrast colouring, and the fact thatnImdidn’t keep up with regular trims to keep the short sides and back - well - short!

It can be super challenging to look ‘cutting edge’ with curly hair. Your asymmetrical cut was probably as edgy as a mop top can get, and the style really suited you. I understand wanting to change things up, but it may be hard to find the drama of ‘edginess’ during a grow out. On the other hand, natural curly hair seems to be having a moment - and some ‘shag’ variations seem modern this year. (I’m not feeling the inverted bob or wedge ATM. Something about precise or geometric lines doesn’t feel ‘right’, nor is it easy to maintain if appointments with stylists are fewer and farther apart.)

You could consider bringing the longer side up to match the shorter side for a more symmetrical mid-length layered style. Shorten the front (maybe 3 inches?) so it is less disconnected, but DON’T do bangs. Something like Yasmin Sewell (#1) but with a longer front that can be swept to either side, parted in the middle, or swept up and pinned back. Kind of a blend of #1 and #2, but not as ‘stiff’ as #3. Smoothed out, it would look like Julia Roberts in #4 - but we all know her hair is quite curly - I just couldn’t find a photo that showed her natural hair texture with this cut.

If you want a more rounded style, and shorter back, you can keep growing the sides and back, but keep the front/fringe shorter*, like #5 and #6. This is a little more conventional style, though.

I’m adding #7 just in case you don’t want to give up any of the front length, and want a l-o-n-g (term) hair project. Get the sides cut to the same symmetrical length, and move your part closer to the middle/center keeping most of the length. The long ‘fringe’ will be disconnected until the sides and back gain more length but the top length can be distributed a little more over both sides, IYKWIM.

*’shorter’ is always relative with curly hair since it shrinks so much, and bangs shrink even more than the sides and back, it seems!

Hope this helps, Shevia!

Hi Shevia —

Since you asked — I don’t think this is really a hair question as much as it’s a personality question.

You have managed to have an annoyingly well-behaved grow-out during lockdown haha (although I know how wavy/curly hair can *feeeeel* super-top-heavy when shaping’s needed).

So the current length plus your usual asymmetrical style looks good ~ intentional ~ stylish.

BUT (da da dummmmm): is it YOU?

As in —> I’d been growing my hair out pre-lockdown after finding a curl cut stylist who didn’t keep cutting my hair off to just above shoulder-length. That length technically LOOKS fine, but makes me feel both conservative and perky and I really dislike it.

So I was happy enough with it pre-LD, and we were like, “ok let’s see what it looks like in 2 months / ~ 3 inches.”

4 months / 6 inches later...I loved my nearly bra band length and kept most of it during my cut a few days ago. I probably would have passed on growing it out of [insert random concerns here.] For me it brings the drama that the mid-length did not (hence my wearing it piled up most of the time).

Anyway: it’s clear you’re not feeling THIS length. In addition to all the great styling tips above, maybe you can just pin the length under now and then to see how you feel when you look in the mirror with it shorter.

If you haven’t been hankering to grow it long in some way/shape/form I don’t know that I’d keep going that direction.

In fact I might go shorter in case you end up with another 2-3 months of grow-out...sort of working backwards as to what’s the longest you can more or less enjoy.

I love it as is. I’m not very avant garde, though, so there’s that.

I think concern about future shut-down is valid, and I had this discussion last week with my stylist when she suggested lighter highlights for the summer. I passed because I want to be able to ride out another several months without hair angst if need be.

Your hair is so adorable. I am personally not drawn to asymmetrical cuts for myself - though you YLFabbers totally rock this look, and I'm in awe - so I'd personally love to see it fuller all around your face at this length. The curls are amazing, and always add the dramatic effect. You can always cut it again, so stick out this growing period and see what happens. Why not?!

Got nothin' to offer - still looks great to me, as it does to other folks.
What product do you use that enables those strands to stand up and/or out like that?

Thank you all for your thoughts. I guess after having a specific, somewhat dramatic style for so long, this neither here nor there (exactly Liesbeth!) look is not pulling its style weight.
Joy - Thank you! My stylist is great but I need to give her some sort of direction. Most of all I need to decide if it is worth risking a short cut.
Zaeobi - Thank you! Actually I have been wearing head bands a lot lately to keep my hair out of my face. I guess I am looking for more of a cut or a goal cut when the shorter side gets longer. Not really sure myself!
rachylou - Ines you say? Well that certainly sound good.
Jessikams - Good ideas, I am waiting for it to get long enough to tuck behind my ear, but gel could work now.
Mirjana - Thank you!
Jenni NZ - Messy is ok with me, but yes, I want it to look more deliberate. Exactly.
Thank you Star!
Mainelady - Well, that's the thing. It seems risky to get a high maintenance cut - everything is open now, but who knows what is coming around the corner. I prefer my hair to be dramatic and deliberate looking - with no fuss .
Liesbeth - Love the pictures, although not sure i can carry off bangs.
Janet - Thank you! I do miss the angles and the statement of the shorter side.
Torontogirl - Everything is open here, but I don't feel the situation is stable enough to count on my previous every 6 week cut. I want to let the shorter side get to my chin I guess. But sometimes I don't. Alas, my hair will never be shiny - it is very dry and getting it not to be a frizz ball is the height of my aspirations in that department!

I don't know Shevia, it looks pretty great to me actually. But I get it - it gets annoying after a while when you can't do what you want with your hair. What's the stylist situation in Israel right now - is that a realistic option?

I'm not great with hair but I can say that my current goal (given I haven't even tried to get a stylist appointment yet as I'm sure they are mobbed) is to get my hair into the shiniest, healthiest shape I can. So I don't bother much with styling, but have been spending a lot more time and effort conditioning, moisturizing, etc. That could be a little hair project to keep in mind?

I am with Joy and Star. I really like it even at this length. But I’m not much help as my own hair is getting really shapeless and I am not sure what to do either. I am growing out the super short side overt left ear, which is maddening — It flips up over my ear, which is why I am mostly parting my hair on the other side and hiding it. You are growing out much more gracefully!

Hmm, not great with hair myself but I think you'd also look great with slightly longer hair in the sides and back and a chop to you fringe, like in the pics below. Still a bit asymmetrical because that's funkier ;). That is, if you want a change. I agree with everyone that I love your current cut, even if I agree at its current length it's a bit neither here nor there.

I always think you hair is gorgeous with the color and asymmetrical style, it I do understand wanting to change things up sometimes. I like the suggestions of trying out clips, a scarf or a headband. Consulting your stylist is a good idea, too! I’m curious, will your changes be subtle or bold?

I don’t think it looks boring, I guess it looks a bit messy. Like not a deliberate style. For mine I think that’s why I keep going back to a short pixie, I hope/think it looks like I meant to do it!
Sorry no ideas because I am very boring re hair.
