This thread has given me a lot to think about. I am going to talk to my hairdresser before I make my final decision. I have ran the facts through my head a dozen times. I don’t think I am ready to go gray. At this point I don’t think I would feel like me with gray hair. I am going to talk to my hairdresser about different products and do some research on my own.

All of you are right there are different reasons that cause hair loss. I doubt if it is all coloring your hair.

Janet-thank-you for your thoughts. You definitely gave me something to think about.

Stagiaire Fash I like the color of your hair.

Thank you all for the encouragement.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned that a change in color from dyed to gray for example will result in a change of colors that look best on you. The booties that currently bookend your hair will no longer do so. It’s not that they will bad, it’s just that they will no longer be a slam dunk. You may have to soften the contrast.

Do what feels right to you. I self-dyed my hair for maybe a dozen years with boxed color which is supposed to be the worst for hair. I never noticed any thinning.

Best wishes on the decision that feels right for you at this point in time.

Of course you are not being vain, this is a totally valid question.
I have a lot of gray hair and I am 34 (like almost all my head is silver now) and I understand why this could be bothersome. I have no issues on going gray, I just thought I would be at least 45 when this happened and people are always talking about "how old I look" (honestly, people just don't realize how entitled they are of talking about someone else this way). Anyway, may I recommend henna dyes? I heard they are much better because they are natural and there is not aggressive chemicals on them.

I will be honest, I have not used them, what I have done the past couple of years is to dye my hair with a vegan colorful dye common here in Canada named "Manic Panic", but that is because I like to dye my hair purple, blue, etc... (and since my hair is silver, I don't have to bleach it! yay!).... these dyes are much less aggressive than the typical permanent dye, but again, I have heard about the henna ones so maybe that is a thought.

Good luck hon, and happy for you to have such a wonderful head of hair <3

I’m not going to tell you what to do, but I will tell you about my choices.

I don’t get Botox or fake nails/lashes, or wear padded bras or spanx/girdles (even when I don’t like the size/shape I am) or dye my hair. It is rare for me to shave anything but my armpits. I had perms in my teens, but not since then, and I don’t own any curling irons, blow dryers, hot rollers, or the like. My sisters do all those things, but I yam what I yam, and “natural” has always been important to me. This stubborn insistence that I don’t need to change things is probably very vain. The one exception is that I do wear some makeup; the allergic circles under my eyes are so dark that people have asked me how I was injured, or even assumed abuse. So I wear concealer and then light makeup, because the concealer makes everything look oddly flat.

As far as wanting to look younger, I am unconvinced that cosmetic measures change perceptions of age. It seems to me that a woman of a certain age with colored hair (or Botox or filler lashes, etc) is still identifiably that age, with colored hair (or Botox or filler lashes, etc), possibly inviting more scrutiny of what age she really is.

I was proud of my streak of grey in my 20s, because it was like my dad’s. I can’t say when the spread began, but I never made a decision to “go grey”; it just slowly happened. My son identifies my hair color as grey overall, which I think is inaccurate, because the bottom-most layers of it are still quite brown. But when my friend complimented my hair recently and I called it golden (thinking of this pic), he said “well, we can settle on silver”. I guess he sees it as grey too. Shrug. He doesn’t have any hair, so he can talk.

If my grey hair has any effect on how people perceive me, my guess is that it contrasts with my energy, so the end result is more emphasis on the vitality.

I know not everyone here agrees with me. One fabber has suggested dying my hair would make me look younger; a former fabber remarked that I should at least cut it into a recognizable style. I prefer to DMOT.

Good luck making a decision you’re happy with!

This is quite the pro-color crowd on the forum.
I had *massive* hair growth after I stopped dyeing, & it grew all over my head (many people get new growth along hairline, temples & crown). I tried first to lighten it to make grow-out less noticeable; it didn’t help (color oxidizes warm on me) & damaged my hair.
You could take a look at gray hair transition videos on youtube. You’ll hear a lot of women talk about new growth. Apparently hair dye can cause hair loss in some women. Don’t know of any way to tell who will experience & who won’t.
The grow-out period was not a good look though.

Thoughts about hair styles and color are not vain, in my book. They are part of what we think about when we think of our personal style, a reflection of our selves. Lots of interesting and informative comments here. I will just add: I wouldn't make a change based on a problem someone else is experiencing. As others note, so many factors can be at play. Looking after the health of your hair is certainly something to consider, and there are many ways that you and your stylist can address that concern.

I’ve coloured my hair since l was 17 and it’s still as fine/thin as it ever was!ln fact colouring it actually thickens it up for me by swelling the hair shaft slightly and the optical illusion of having some darker shades in amongst the blonde but then l have only ever added highlights so there is minimal contact with the skin and therefore minimal absorption.l think that hairloss can be a complicated area and causes may be multi factorial.

I haven't colored my hair since my 20s, and I have lots of gray streaks. And yet, I am voting in favor of coloring! Screw that person and his/her ideas.

Yes, it's true that many women have hair that thins out as they age, due to a variety of factors as everyone has mentioned here. But there are plenty of lucky ones who it doesn't happen to, so I don't think that preemptively stopping the color (when you really prefer to color) makes sense. My mother is on the brink of 80 and she abuses her hair to no end--no gentle color at all. She's still routinely dying and bleaching. And I can only hope to have a head of hair as thick as hers when I'm her age! I say don't worry about thinning until it is actually happening to you. Enjoy your color.

Debbie I do not think fear of losing hair should make you stop coloring your hair. I think there are new safer dyes out there, and as pointed out above, adding color is less damaging than stripping it of color with bleach. I am happy with my decision to stop coloring my hair, but I had positive reasons for doing so rather than just negative ones (like preventing hair loss). Anyway, my two cents!

Right before COVID, I decided to lighten my hair a bit, going from very dark brown (almost black…which was my “from birth” color) to a lighter brown. I was thinking I’d eventually add light highlights to better hide the growout if I decided to go grey. This was done in a salon.

However, to get to that lighter brown the hair had to be bleached first and that whole process has definitely damaged my hair. I regularly lose a ton when I shampoo and it’s been very very stressful. The stress from COVID has not helped either, I’m sure, as referenced above. (I have not had COVID.)

I am hoping the hair loss will eventually stop, but honestly no one can tell because my hair is super thick anyway.

Just a bit more data for you. The good thing about hair is that you can always change your mind…hardly anything is permanent, so to speak! Two of my kids in their 20s have some grey hairs showing up…my daughter in particular is not interested in dying her hair (she had cancer as a child, which has definitely influenced her choices). I’m hopeful that her generation will help reframe the whole aging conversation, especially around hair/looks, etc.

My personal experience two cents? I reluctantly stopped dyeing my hair because lengthy visits to the salon during Covid were not a good idea. I knew I’d stop someday, but I didn’t think I was ready two years ago, LOL. Today? Well, I have to say I still have mixed feelings — I know I look older (which I know doesn’t bother a lot of people but it does bother me a bit). But mostly I’m glad to not have the upkeep. My hair texture is a little different now — a little more wiry and less smooth and shiny — but I do think I’m not losing hair at the rate I was when I was getting it colored.

My personal feeling is that with my greys visible, a deliberate style is more important than ever. It feels scruffier to me when I’ve got grey + unkempt happening. So I may start getting cuts/trims slightly more often — my last cut was in November and I’m definitely feeling shaggy (even though I’ve gently thinned my bangs and top layers a couple of times).

My husband has admitted that he wasn’t so sure about it when my hair was first growing out, but now he likes it. If you decide to give up the dye, be prepared for Opinions, LOL.

But another factor that helped nudge me is that my BFF is a surgeon specializing in breast cancer, and she has been studying the research on the correlation between certain chemical dyes and straighteners and breast cancer. Just something to be aware of. Having lost another BFF to breast cancer, I have to say that made an impression.

I’m just telling you all this so you hear one person’s experience — the good and the not as good. You have lovely thick hair, and I’m sure it will look great either way! The actual growing out transition is the hardest part, and I decided that once I had a few inches of grey showing, I never wanted to have to go through that transition again. I figured it would only get more obvious as time went on and the amount of grey increased. It is a very personal decision and I don’t think you’ll regret it if you decide to let go of the dye, but expect an adjustment!

Debbie, I think to gray or not to gray is a very personal choice - in general, hair can be fraught, and you really need to do what feels comfortable to you; after all you're the one wearing it! I know that's probably not very helpful ... :(

As to the hair thinning, that's interesting - I've never heard that before. I wonder if your friends were bleaching their hair, and it was causing breakage? That would think it out and/or make it grow really slowly. Perhaps you could talk to your stylist about gentler options - like semi-permanent vs permanent dyes that might use gentler chemicals?

Good luck, and the good thing with hair is that it's never a permanent decision - you can always choose one way and then change your mind :)

I think you have to be ready to go gray. It took me many years of contemplating it before I got the the stage where it was more hassle to color than it was worth. That being said, a grow-out might be a bit easier right now because it has become less unusual. And your hairdresser can definitely help with options to make it a little bit easier.

Just a side note on the hair loss, the pandemic has been known as a mass hair loss event partly due to stress and partly because the fever caused by Covid can lead to hair loss several months after contracting the virus.

I have lost a lot of hair post Covid which is finally slowing down.

I just wanted to add this as there could be factors other than the hair dye at play.

Debbie, I have my hair coloured but to keep it gentler on my scalp, to avoid any chemical damage, I get my hair coloured using foils. This article explains why dying hair can accompany hair loss, but the good news it is not permanent, so I think you are fine to continue to dye your hair if you enjoy having it coloured.

Will Hair Dye Cause my Hair to Fall Out? - Walk-in Dermatology (walkindermatology.com)

Generally hair loss in women is caused through hormonal fluctuations (pregnancy and menopause), medical problems, medications, genetics and medical treatments such as chemo. I liked this article dealing with hair loss and its causes:

You have beautiful hair and the coloring looks great on you ( soft colors, natural look ). I think you should make your decision with your stylist but don't need to go grey if you are not into it.
I still like my hair with highlights/lowlights that bring more volume and more contrast to my look.
Agree with going with the best quality product that available now - gentle and safe. Regular trimmings and great shampoo/conditioner should be enough to keep your fabulous hair shiny, healthy and beautiful.

I don't think you are being vain! We all want to put our best "selves" forward (in whatever form that might take), so if you want to color - color!

You have beautifully thick hair which I envy. I've always had thin, fine hair and enjoyed coloring it - color added body and shine. While I haven't colored it for a few years, it hasn't gotten thinner.

I don't claim to have any special "hair" knowledge, but I would think that adding color would not be as harmful as heavy chemical processes like perms, chemical straightening, stripping color or bleaching (i.e. going super blond if you are not naturally blond).

I do think it is worth paying up for the best quality color and colorist you want to pay for. And maybe check with your own doctor or dermatologist for their thoughts.

I have a hair appointment this weekend for a cut and color. My hair is getting heavy so I need to take a couple of inches off of it. My question is color.

A little back story to tell you how I started down this rabbit hole. I had lunch with some friends this weekend and the conversation turned to hair. Two of my friends are really losing their hair and the other ones hair is thinning badly. All of their Drs say it is from over dyeing their hair. My hair became the topic because I am not losing it.

So my question is do I continue coloring as usual or do I get my hairdresser to help me go gray so that I can quit dyeing my hair. I know I am being vain but I would really like your opinions.
