Fun thread! It's interesting to read about everyone's plans. I am very lackadaisical about my hair, but do prefer it around shoulder-length. I cut it pretty short in late August, and now I'm just growing it out a bit and happy that's its longer/shaggier.

So many great plans here for 2024. I am clueless for myself.

My fine and stick straight hair is thinning like crazy-so last year went from a platinum 12.ultra light blonde to a darker 8 shade-which is closer to my initial color-but my roots are now ashy.
I loved the volume on top of a pixie but hated the nape when too short. So, thought of just growing it out for feeling like having more hair on my head somehow- so I have a quasi layered short cut with bangs at the moment.
Trying to grow out my sides but they are very streaky and see through (in fact al my hair is!:-(() but I thought I could benefit from even more hair if growing out my fringe, too but have no idea if I will have the patience and if that will do me any favours (as I have had bangs for all my life!).
It is so annoying to style for work when in between.

Like Irina "I have a sort of angular face. I never look good in slick styles although I like them a lot on others. I need to keep mine a bit messy with some volume to soften my face". But how to do this if I don't have the volume for layering??

Loved the style you have now Jules, thanx for answering on my question on the other thread!:-) Wondering how yours or a kind of a mullet would look on straight hair?

I'm also pondering getting a perm- which would then make my hair hold a curl better. I have had regular perms in long hair when in my teens&twenties-looked great back then as increase my volume and got better results on holding that curl (with velcro rolls, or a curling brush) for a Charlie(aka Farah Fawcet) look back than! But am now afraid of all the chemicals on my scalp --and wouldn't perms fry my poor hair??? Also hair dye and perms together is not such a good idea, I was said....
So, clueless for now! Am just living from a wash day to another-one day at a time..:-))

I tried to grow out my shorter side for a bit and didn't like it. My current plan is to play more with the styling than the length. I saw a hair video of someone who's hair I love and when she said her high volume hair is actually thin I realized I must be wasting a natural resource, because my hair is thick (not as thick as it used to be but still thick). Some days it works better than other, but it is a fun to play.

I don't have anything big planned for my hair in 2024. My dramatic hair shift/transition was August 2023. My hair at the time was 2-4 inches past shoulders. I chopped off 6 inches and went with a chin length inverted bob, with shingled back and face framing layers at the front -- very 1930s glam. Photo transition over the last 10 years.

If I do anything, it might be a slightly different color OR to go grey. But otherwise, the cut itself won't likely change.

When I lived in Southern Ontario, I had a great hair stylist who I could trust. I continued to go to her, but after the pandemic and with my health issues, I had to look for someone closer to home. I have tried many stylists around here but haven't found anyone.
Some women I know go to Toronto to get their hair done. I don't plan to do that.
I am sticking to a cut that is all one length with bangs. I am still debating how long to keep my hair. Some days, I think about letting my hair grow until I am 70.

As you know my hair is a natural silver for 2 years or so now. When I decided to grow out my dyed hair I was sure I would keep my hair maximum shoulder length. I have only ever once had a very short cut when I was 11 years of age and I hated it and have always had a bit longer than shoulder length since. However my natural silver hair behaves very differently to my dyed hair. It is much smoother and in better condition. So it has been getting longer and longer as I only trim every 3 months now. I really like it longer. So going forward I am not going to let it get too long, but will keep it trimmed and on the longer side. So no real changes in mind. I do sometimes think of dying it a lavender or something interesting and then when I look at the dyes in the store they do not look as bright and nice as my own. Sounds vain but I do feel lucky that I am so happy with my natural colour. I dyed my hair age 14 trying to go blonde and then red and never stopped. Then grew grey hairs very soon after.

My hair goal is partly a change, partly a continuation. I've been growing my hair out for seven years. My initial goal was waist length, which I reached about four years ago. At the same time I started significantly shedding hair, losing at least half my hair volume in about 8 months. With the rest I reached past tailbone length, a major long hair milestone. But it was also super thin, and I finally had a "major" cut of about 8" and got it closer to the waist. I've kept it there since.

As the new growth starting showing up, I had a weird layered effect. Sometimes the shorter hair curled tighter than the longer hair. Now my regrowth is solidly mid-back and approaching the waist. This year my goal is to keep the effective length around waist level and see how I like it as the regrowth continues to fill in and thicken the ends.

In the future I still hope to grow it longer, assuming I can keep the thickness. I like it better shorter in the winter, since it doesn't "hang" as well over bulky winter skirts. Longer in the summer is good, though. Most of the time it's up for the heat but sometimes I let it down and feel all fairy-tale and romantic in a pretty dress.

Pictures 1-2: Hair this morning. The loss of volume shows more in the profile. The color lightens toward the ends, so transparency is a better visual measure of thickness.

Picture 3: Old picture from spring 2022, showing regrowth about 6-8" long. I had to lean to the side to show. (This is not all of my hair, I always brush each half separately to minimize new tangles.)

RunCarla, Your hair is so lovely that you can't go wrong with it! I like it shorter, I like it longer :)
I'm trying to get to 3 months mark between the cuts. I prefer it shorter and for that it requires a cut once in two months but because it's winter I want to see if I will be able to wait longer. I'm almost at 2 months mark now and it start to annoy me. I added a few layers around the face last year and want to keep it. I have a sort of angular face. I never look good in slick styles although I like them a lot on others. I need to keep mine a bit messy with some volume to soften my face. Sticking with it for now.

I have the urge to cut all the blonde off and see how grey I am underneath. I tried this about a decade ago and didn't like the mix of brown and grey. I have more grey now, but possibly not enough overall to like the effect. Easy enough to bleach it again.

I am considering a major haircut in 2024. But first to find a stylist who does not use sudsing shampoo or let me come in with hair just washed in cream rinse. My hair has been growing very long so I need about 6 inches off. I want a short bob, which does not work well with hats. My hair also does a flip when rather long, but it is beyond that now. I roll it up in a bun, which is easy.

Interesting thoughts on my constant battle with getting my wavy hair to look decent. I was supposed to go for a trim today but with my broken foot I am trying to simplify things (and create less driving for my DH) so cancelled it. So I guess I am growing it out a bit! Longer can drag down my face so we'll see how long I go before I take scissors to it myself.

I recently saw a post about refreshing curly hair with a wet microfiber towel and gave it a try. What a difference! Much better curl clumps and less stringy waves. More frizz though. :(

2023 was the year of the big update for me. I went from long all-one-length covid hair to short, layered shaggy looks with bangs (over the course of several cuts; I keep going shorter). I really like the new stylist I found for this process and it's been fun to try different styles. In 2024 I want to learn how to style it better and be more consistent about that (it can be tempting to just brush it out and finger style but it looks more intentional if I wet it at least!). My big 2024 goal is actually to learn how to do makeup beyond my default tinted moisturizer and mascara. I just ordered a desktop organizer which will help me have my makeup and brushes available rather than digging them out of overly full travel bags.
https://www.amazon.com/Umbra-P.....&th=1

Well, I wore my hair quite short for close to 30 years. When the pandemic came along I let it grow and grow and grow into a long layered look. But I soon tired of the time it took to style and opted for a short bob. It feels good, the upkeep is easy and I’m going to keep it this way for the foreseeable future.

Planning a Big Chop!

I spent most of my 20s and early 30s with short hair (pixie, bob, shaved, microbob/bixie), then started growing it out in 2019, and kept at it through the pandemic (easy enough!). Definitely craving a change now. Hair is currently down to my shoulder blades, with shorter layers around the face but no fringe. I'm thinking of going back to ear-length for now with as much texture as I can coax out of my straight hair, with a shorter, but not too disconnected, fringe. Psyched!

Like Rachy, I'm having fun with longer hair, although I am toying with the idea of shorter face framing layers so it doesn't sit quite as heavy as current. I tend to do what my stylist tells me so we'll see what she says tomorrow when I go! I've also reclaimed my brunette hair from the encroaching gray, and I love it, even though blonder was a fun experiment I would happily revisit.

I have never been strategic with my hair ... I think surviving the "Rachel shag" cut from a student stylist in my university years inoculated me against worrying much about it haha!

Just learning how to deal with the curlier texture of my hair as the greys take over. So far a silicone free hair mask once a week has been the best addition, but I have some more samples to go.

I'm returning to a longer bob--just above shoulder length. After experimenting with different styles and stylists, I realize that I want the cut that is easiest for me to take care of, and with my fine, straight hair, that's a bob that almost reaches the shoulders. Long enough to tie back or up in the summer months. I'm going 2 months between cuts this round, and I think one more after that and it will be all one length and I'll be able to do different styles with it. Done with layering and feathering that I let myself get talked into.

I'm wearing a pixie with a longer asymmetrical fringe right now and enjoying it. But inevitably in summer, i want to lop off the extra hair in the front around my face, so I will probably do that at some point. And then grow it back over the winter. :) It's not much of a change, but it's enough for me.

Yes indeed, I have a hair appointment booked on Friday. I'm going for a long pixie this time round. I wore a short pixie for many years until the hair salons closed due to covid, thats when I reverted back to a bob but now I'm itching to change things up again. Sure hope I like it, but my hair grows rather quickly anyways

In the responses to Angie’s blog post on goals for 2024 https://youlookfab.com/2024/01.....-for-2024/ several members mentioned hair and hairstyle as something they were looking to evolve in 2024. I hope you will share your ideas and plans on this thread. I just love anything hair related!

In 2023 I let my hair get longer - to shoulder length. This resulted in some flipping up at the bottom. I didn’t mind channeling my inner Catherine Deneuve! However, this longer length is really problematic with all the hats I wear in winter, and annoying to deal with for swimming and drying after with my sometimes bothersome right shoulder.

When I went to get my hair cut the first week of November, I asked for a Big Chop. I referenced the ‘Micro Bob’ trend, popularized by Hailey Bieber, Carey Mulligan, and others. My stylist got it, and said it would be a good look for me over the winter when I style my hair straight. I had 3-4 inches taken off. I loved it right off the bat, and have received positive comments. I went 2 months, and then just after New Years got it trimmed an inch to keep the cropped look. I’m going to keep this shorter style for a while - I think.

Are you considering a hair update in 2024?
