My tip for beachy waves is to use a medium size curling iron ( maybe 1 1/2 ") but the important part for me is to leave ends of the hair out of the curling iron. Gives it the messy, beach look instead of the poodle look!

Not a mess at all! Instead of a flatiron, use a big barrel curling iron. Try using one of the sea salt sprays, too - you can pick up a bottle at your local drugstore or Target.

Hey Una! I like the look on you! And I'm loving your silver.

Now that my hair is longer, I've been doing the beachy wave/flat iron thing quite a bit, and it does get easier with practice. I have a lot of hair so to save time, and avoid the big hair look, I scrunch dry my whole head and then only "curl" portions of the top bit. I do it very randomly and try to curl in different directions.

I really like the second attempt. I think you need a true curling iron - not a flat iron. And you could try braiding or wrapping damp hair and letting it air dry to see if you can get waves (or have you tried this already?).

Thanks for the tips all. This is clearly another "organized chaos" trick.... I need to learn how to curl both ways and without creating a big bump. Anna, thanks for the product link. I have the salt spray but it doesn't help with holding in place, just messing up.

Oh, wait this is a hair issue I know. Maybe the only one! I like the first pic. Beachy waves look good on you. The second pic shows that your hair is flat on top... then it sort of goes out and then bends pretty sharply out from the head and comes down. For beachy waves, you want your hair to lay pretty flat against your head all the way through the bend down to mid ear. So you want to start the curl lower. This is a problem one gets with blow drying bobs too. In this case, tho, you need to take your brush right to the top of your head and pick up hair at the root - start the "bend" higher.

Your silver hair is amazing!! I like what you have going on, but I feel your pain with the flat iron. It always ends up really strange when I try and then I leave it for several months.

I really love your end result, Una! You've got a really cool, imperfect wavy look, in the car photo.
The first photo looks like the beach-wave look, too, actually, though the second photo does look a little bit "big-hair." So I think you're close, there. I had to laugh along with you--"hot mess" is my experience exactly, when I try to re-create something a stylist did.

SO not a hot mess! I like what you've got going on. The thing about beachy waves - is that it's supposed to look messy and choppy. That's what the beach air and sea salt water does to your hair. Also, I promise you that the more you practice with the flat iron, the easier it will be and the more control you will have over the direction of the waves. I much prefer a flat iron over a curling iron. The curling iron gives me helmet head - I can't imagine what it would do to yours!

ETA: this style would probably be easier and maybe look a little bit better if your hair was shorter!
