ETA I think I'm ready for some sort of drastic hair change. I hate that thing where you come up with a whole regimen and then it stops working! But glad to have so many good recommendations for other things to try...

Echoing others that your hair looks fab grey - I could only hope to emulate your 'cool girl' shag cut! My fine & curly hair would be an absolute mess with baby bangs, lol

I've had a complicated relationship with my hair all my life - first the length (a fellow kid ask me if I was a boy or girl because my mother had forced me to cut it short, lol...), then culturally (curls were a dirty secret - had to keep it as 'naturally wavy' (blowdried) at all times), then when 'ageing' (got my first grey hair at 16 - thanks, genetics!) & now about my health (before it was 'fine but dense' but now it's just fine... thanks genetics x2, lol!) I did dye it blue thoug, since school couldn't reprimand me for it (under hijab)

Tried the CGM (Curly Girl Method) in 2017 but cut it to ear length... only really began to hit my CGM stride in 2019, coinciding with my personal style consultation (discovered my natural curls work well with a Romantic / Soft Classic look). I've been getting some version of a 'curly shag' ever since (hairdressers were restricted for a bit here during COVID, but not for long - still have to wear a mask during appointments now though...)

I finally went in for a refresh last week - the ends were getting scraggly just for the sake of keeping length, so I got 'curtain bangs' put in, with a blunt cut now to my armpits. Wish I'd known about 'curl shock' before I went, though... wouldn't have gone so close to my birthday, lol! My fringe is flipping all over the place now - both literally & figuratively, hah! I do feel the blunt cut is less trendy too...

Janet, your transition to silvery gray is fabulous! Your eyeglass frames add a gorgeous statement. Your skin and eyes are showcased to perfection.
I was gray prepandemic. During the pandemic and WFH I still spent quite a bit of time smoothing out my wavy/ curly hair. As I neared retirement I began to relax in my style and in my need to control my hair.
My layers are longer, with some face framing layers. Unless pulling my hair up in some kind of a style, I let my curls do what they were born to do. I have finally reached a place in my life where I can enjoy them.

Well I love your fun edgy hair, Janet!

The stress and health issues from the pandemic have caused my hair to fade some. I have not been to the salon regularly, so my cut is all over the place.

I was lucky enough to get a nice razor cut about a year and a half ago that few out well. I still wear it in a long layered shag with bangs, it’s just messier-looking than normal.

Nowadays I trim the length myself and avoid heat styling to help it look healthy for as long as possible. Most of the time it’s in a messy bun or top knot anyway.

Well, I'm super late to the party, but Janet, I just wanted to say...You do NOT look old! You look gorgeous with your new hair color. That jacket and scarf should be your new signature...so perfect for your coloring.

I don't think about my hair too much...I'm kind of embracing it's natural will. I was feeling like my look was getting stagnant and just chopped off about 4 inches. Like someone else said, it curls under in some places and flips up in others and at 60 I'm done fighting it.

I like your natural hair, it looks very fresh on you.
It has been 10 years since I last colored my hair but I still have my doubts and sometimes have actual dreams about coloring again. Last summer I even mustered courage to go into salon and ask for coloring and my hairdresser bluntly refused - she liked my natural hair too much. I even have a box of dye in my bathroom that I eye from time to time but then I remind myself how much maintenance that was, and how my roots were always visible because my hair grows very fast.

I think your hair project has been very successful! Looks great!

Until pandemic hit, I wore my pin-straight, fine but lots-of-it hair, long and with traditional partial blonde highlights. I would get cut and colour every 4 months.

Once Covid hit, I didn’t step foot in the salon for 18 months. Hair was very long and grow-out significant. My few greys give my hair some natural highlights so I wanted to work with that and get colour that would allow for a more natural grow-out and salon visits only every 6 months. Well after three such visits, my hair is a wreck! I traded in natural looking regrowth at the crown for a mess at my ends and tons of breakage. My last appointment (late October) really caused the most damage. To be fair, I was also recovering from a patch of alopecia which didn’t help matters.

So now I’m working on regaining some condition. I’ve watched a ton of YouTube videos and spent some cash on shampoo/conditioner and products. I’m using Olaplex No. 3, 6 and 7 and Pureology shampoo, conditioner and leave-in, a weekly Amika hair mask too. I’m giving my hair another 7 weeks to see if I can make it look better. If not, at my late Feb appt, I’ll go in for a big chop. We’ll see.

Before the pandemic I dyed my hair every 5-6 weeks. During the pandemic when we couldn’t go to the salon I realized the new growth (which had previously been gray) was almost the same color as my dyed blond hair! I decided that when I retired (last June) I was going to let it grow out and see if I liked it. It’s almost all grown out now, and it’s a white/blond color, and so far I’m OK with it. I’m not sure what’s next, I might add some highlights but I doubt I’ll ever go back to a full dye again.

I am biased but I love the gray on you and the shag haircut. My favorite cut ever was a shag when I was younger but I haven't been able to replicate it since then.

I agree that a current haircut is important to me, especially now that it is gray, but sometimes it is hard to know what is actually current, haha. I do know that it needs to look like a "style" and not just a cut, IYKWIM, and I always bring pictures when I go for a haircut.

The gray takes a while to get used to, I will admit. I started growing it out a year before the pandemic and even now sometimes wish I still had my brown hair back - but I don't want to do the grow-out again. And I am afraid it makes me look old BUT I also think that is our perception of gray haired women and it's a perception I think should change so I guess I'll stick with it.

I love the shag on you, seems to work so well with your texture. I really have no preference with colour or not, both look good. Both kind of rock and roll!
I feel for yah. Still miss my big brown curls. People would stop me and ask for the hairdresser’s name and it was me. Youth. Completely unappreciated at the time.
I have a friend who looked at me when I moaned about transitional periods being rough, and slung some wisdom on me. “It’s ALL a transitional period!”
Well, dang.

If lockdowns hadn’t occurred, I’d probably still be sporting a chin length curly bob. My hair is it’s natural colour, but it has taken a while to see myself as I am vs the copper penny red-head I was until my 50’s! Cognac no longer works, but honey beige or camel is great!

Since my stylist re-opened, I’ve had regular cuts, but have kept my hair long enough to make a stubby ponytail, and now wear it up some of the time. I mostly style it straight in winter - ‘cause hats really mess with the curl and hats are a must November through April. Once the humidity hits around May - there’s no sense in trying to wear it straight.

I feel like my hair is at odds with my personality and style sense. I like things tidy, controlled, streamlined - and yet my hair does this wild and crazy thing!

Well I am sure you will be shocked to hear I think your grey hair looks fabulous and prefer it on you to the somewhat harsher dark color. I absolutely get more compliments from younger women, and have heard more than once that they wish their mothers would let their hair go grey. Although the tide is turning and women my age are beginning to come around. During the pandemic when I couldn't get my hair cut I was sort of miserable - without a sharp cut my unruly hair really messes with my self image. Sometimes I feel like I want a big change, but can only see going shorter and sharper at this stage.

Suntiger: I received the Revlon drier as a gift 2 Christmases ago. I like it for how it quickly dries my hair, but practice though I do, I can't make the hair flip under, so I use a couple of curlers or a curling iron to finish it off.

Janet, you are singing my song! I've always been pretty serious about my hair, although it took me a loooong time, many unsatisfactory salon experiences, and years of cutting my own hair to realize it. You and I have very similar colour and texture. I'm in my mid 30s but hot on your heels in terms of greys (sprouted my first silver hair at age 23--genetics...). I colour sporadically with henna for its strengthening/conditioning properties, but at the moment, all the colour is fully faded/grown out and I definitely have more greys than I did at the start of the pandemic.I am a huge salt-and-pepper fan, and think it looks every bit as good on women as it does on George Clooney. I agree with everyone who says your natural hair colour gives you a fresh, youthful, and slightly edgy look. I also love the slightly longer bangs on you. I've moved in the same direction and find it feels more current and interesting than the short, choppy bangs I rocked for years. I suspect this is part of an overall aesthetic shift towards loose, relaxed and organic, and away from sharp, crisp and geometric. I think Angie's hair transition exemplifies this shift as well!

Janet, I absolutely love your hair color and cut! It suits you so beautifully and looks so fresh to me! And your new specs are just the icing on the cake. Your look is so modern and truly befits your life as an artist.

High five to all of the mulleteers :). I had one too--very challenging to "feather" the shorter front part, with my thick, coarse, naturally curly hair, but I did it!

My current hair is brown with plenty of gray. It's interesting because my younger brother (he's 53, I'm 55) is totally gray, with a big gray beard, while my SO (who is 57) naturally has almost no gray in his almost black hair (he's convinced that people think he dyes it, lol). The aging process is so idiosyncratic!

Lisa, it’s true that coloring adds some texture to fine hair — definitely a factor for a lot of people! Mine is a lot thinner than it used to be, which is sort of a mixed bag. On one hand, I’d like a little of that old volume back, but on the other, it’s way easier to manage my hair now than it was when I was younger, and it takes way less time to blow dry it!

Ah hair . I love yours Janet - and agree with the others that the current style and colour are so youthful and modern .

Staying current with my hair is SO important to me and I always fear I look stuck in the past . But , but …..I have crappy thin fine hair and thinning temples and sagging skin and blah blah and I don’t know what else to do with it . My hair is kind of my thing - and I think it looks more modern / bettwr in person than it does in photos I post here which make me look like I have a giant head . Anyways - I tried to do a colour grow out earlier in the pandemic . Once it grew out I decided it looked too blah and lifeless . Colouring also adds some texture and volume - so back to highlights I went . I often wish I could grow it out into something different but doubt my ability to push through the bad hair days .

LOL Suntiger, the natural wave in my hair is often such that it flips up on one side and under on the other. I just put some styling paste in the ends to try to piece it out a little bit so the curl is not too neat, and then just go with it!

Dee, your bob looks fantastic! I look ridiculous in a bob — I tried, once. Pics still make me cringe.

Suz, you’ve handled your varying length of pixie so well! It always looks so good.

I’m on my phone so I’ll try to respond to more later. Thanks for all the encouragement on the grey transition. I’ve become more comfortable with it for sure.

Well my hair changed but not by choice! I've never had my hair short by choice, but between the pool and age related thinning (according to the dermatologist), I had to cut it into a short bob. It's much higher maintenance, now I have to trim every 2 months instead of every 4-5.

I still color, sometimes at the salon with a glaze and sometimes at home, more to cover the chlorine fading than the greys. I use the darkest brown possible, but it only lasts about a month.

I just got this tool, and spend every morning wrestling with it so my hair rolls under instead of flipping up. Not that it stays put- but I try. The flipping makes me So Mad. I know some people like the style but it's too "cutesy" (and chaotic) for my overall look and personality.

Janet, I know I could be seen as biased, but I am with Minaminu and Jenn here -- I think you give a younger impression with the greys.

It might be because it feels less "done" or it might be because it complements your skin tone more. Yes, from a distance, someone would think you were a younger woman with the dark hair. But up close? I think they are more likely to see you as "cool" (and therefore, in their unededucated minds, "young") with the greys coming in. ;)

Dee, love your face framing bob! I have always wanted to wear my hair that way but the few times I tried were a complete flop -- my face is far to long and angular. So I enjoy it all the more on others!

The only real change the pandemic created in my hair routine was that I could not get it cut as often as I wished, so it grew longer. To cope, I bought a new flat iron, so I could iron out the waves and make an angular long bang when cuts were not available. I also tucked the sideburns behind my ears when it got long-ish. I'm still going much longer between cuts because my stylist is in Vancouver and I can't always get there when I wish. I tried one here and thought he gave good cuts (not as good as my Vancouver stylist's but definitely good) but I didn't like his politics and it started to bother me.

My natural hair is mousy/dark blond/partially grey with fine soft texture that looks boring and flat if not highlighted and cut in short pixie cut often. During pandemic I did myself what I could but I was back to regular visits to my hairdresser the moment it was possible again.
I'm not planning to change much my preferences - I feel depressed with my natural hair and totally washed out. In the past I tried purple and blue colors on my hair but probably won't do it again - just some low or highlights.
Your hair looks gorgeous and the current shape works for your lovely features - but you can do some small experiments like blue framing highlights or tint in similar colors ( only if you are inclined to do so - for fun ).

I got married before turning 20 in the mid 80s. I had a perm and a mullet. My DH's hair is naturally curly and he had a mullet, too. We basically had a same haircut! LOL

Jenn, can I just confess that I was along the earliest mullet wearers? It actually suited my hair type, much as the shag cut does. Layers! My hair was curlier and thicker then (high school). LOL

Taking a quick break from packing for a trip south, but I’ll be back to respond more later!

I love your current hair. The salt-and-pepper color is beautiful, and I honestly think you look younger with the soft grays than without.

Dee,you look so cute with that face framing bob!and Janet, you really rock the grey. One of the benefits of having darker colouring when you were younger is that going grey tends to be flattering as well.
l am afraid that lam like Irina, fine thin hair with the added benefit of fluffiness no matter what l do.It’s also going grey in funny patches rather than evenly or dramatically so my hair is never a feature of my look.l try and keep it tidy and prefer abit of length so l can tie it up but l am really jealous of those of you who can play around with actual styles.

You look fab in your long shag, the salt and pepper adds an extra hip vibe to it, if you ask me.

I used to wear my hair in a long pixie for years but with no access to salons for a time during the pandemic, I decided to let it grow out into a chin length bob which I used to wear a lot in my 30s & 40s,
I also used to put a temporary amber rinse in my hair that would wash out after 28 days or so, but I don’t bother anymore. My hair is a now light ash brown with grey hiding underneath by my temples. I do not like the look of hair swept off my face either exposing this grey. I prefer the look of all over grey which is coming eventually.

My hair does grow quick, so I can change it up often if I wanted to but
I’m finding my bob easy to work with and there’s less trips to the salon to maintain it.
I don’t really like posting face shots much, but I’ll make this exception haha.
1) 2018
2) 2022
