I also often look better with a short cut, and I really think yours would look good on me. I enjoy how a good layered cut doesn't need as much maintenance as you'd think.

Here's mine...it wasn't exactly what I wanted, but the hairdresser always does a good job. (Please forgive dark computer photos. Home super late and was locked out, so no effort to put together a good photo.)

I love the short cut, but you look lovely with long hair too! The cut you have now is perfect! The bangs are a good length. Having the other pictures helps to compare! Thanks LaPed!

You look so good in all these styles, and it's fun to see the transition. My impression is that the shorter cuts echo your clothing styles. I see a harmony with the shorter cuts--an overall playfulness, a tomboy vibe. With the longer hair, I see a mix of pretty and playful between the hair and clothes. Both work nicely and are complementary.

Love the new cut is it really a DIY????
I learnt a lot from your thread thanx for posting this.
-For ex. the "cowlick on one side of my forehead behaves better if I weigh it down (hence a cut that moves a lot of hair forward!)"-I have that cowlick on my front hairline, too!!!! (or, better to say my all front hairline is a giant cowlick??? -so my bangs never lay flat they rather sping up!).

I have a straight, fine and flat hair which doesn't keep a style naturally (so had to brush dry on heat) and currently growing out my layers from a longer pixie (I kept cutting the nape back to achieve a micro bob somehow). I still have bangs(now longer and sort of curtain) but my sideburns are to my jaw and as my hair is also thin and lacking density and voume on top I already feel it is dragging me down:-(...
SOOOO, I really need to hold myself back from touching shears and cut in it.

A also find a blunt straight bob would be too severe on me-I usually loved my bob when had a perm and put my hair on rollers in the past...(but perms were really damaging my thin hair).

A layered short hair with soft almost transparent bangs suited my face for the volume given still I hated pixies with sharply trimmed neckline (and sideburns!) -as you also said. And yes, that seems to be the only way to do a pixie in my neck of the woods- always fussy and severe on me! It seems all I want is perhaps a frayed chopy longer hairline all over somehow...

That was the reason for what I succumbed to (and now trying to stick with) DIYcuts - which is never proffesional enough of course -but at least I can hope to stop when hitting that magic point....:-))

Lucky you, all of these look wonderful on you!

I sometimes crave a bit of a change, but I think I need to let mine grow out a bit before I try anything new. I don’t really care for short hair on me, especially now that I’m letting the grey show. And my hair grows so fast that maintaining a short cut sounds kind of daunting anyway!

Argh, I can't believe it's taken me a whole week to come back to this! Thanks for all the positive comments. I do actually enjoy my hair equally in its long and short iterations *but* I don't find long to be any lower-maintenance than short. Different forms of maintenance, and there are upsides and downsides to both. I will almost certainly go back to long at some point, and have lots of fun with it in between (Frenchie bob!!).

Jaime -- yes, this has been a lesson in just how short I can take the bangs. Stylists are always nervous to go too short, but doing it my self I can tell when I hit that magic point where all the emphasis is on my eyes. I can also tell now (several weeks of grow out) that my bangs are no longer at that optimal point :D

Suz -- I think summer is when a super cropped pixie really shines. Less fuss with sweat/humidity/etc. And dries so fast after a swim!

Jenni NZ -- I've definitely always identified with the Kibbe Gamine descriptions!

pirouette -- thank you! I really do think there's a long cut and a short cut for everyone, but changing it up always involves a certain element of risk. I have years of DIY trial and error behind me, plus some wonderful salon cuts and some truly awful ones. I treat every hair change as a learning experience!

Angie and cjh -- thanks! My eyes have always been the feature that people notice first (I got soooo tired of the compliments as a kid! ); haircuts that play them up are almost always a success.

Robin -- when I started cutting, I thought I might just trim the bangs and take a little bulk off the sides, but once I got going I knew I wanted to go even shorter. Intuitive process!

Dee -- I really enjoy the look of a good bixie, but they are so tricky!

JAileen -- I love your new longer style!

Bonnie -- I know exactly what you mean about that little flip at the back! So annoying.

slim cat -- yes, maintaining the sides so it doesn't get that mushroom shape is the biggest challenge with most pixies. I removed a *remarkable* amount of bulk around the ears, and suspect I will go back and clean those sections up before summer rolls around.

rachylou -- thanks! I think so too. It's one of the best pixies I've ever had.

Runcarla -- your hair always looks incredible in your WIWs! Love the micro-bob + curls. I have serious curly hair envy, though I know it poses its own set of challenges.

Sal -- the dry times with fine, straight hair are no joke. Definitely a motivating factor for going short again! I do enjoy it long as well, all the different styling/updo options, but it's refreshing to *not* have to think about it at all now. :)

Zaeobi -- you've pretty much read my mind! After lots of experimentation with heavier blunter bangs and choppier more open bangs, I do think I prefer the later. And yes, I'm thinking that with a little pre-season trimming, I can get a decent growout over the course of July-August and get back to that tousled stage. I like that too -- annoyingly, a lot of it is product/humidity dependent. Some shampoos/cleansing conditioners render my hair completely straight, others make it very flippy! On a rainy day, I almost always have more texture than on a dry sunny day. Grab bag!

Jonesy -- it took me a looong time to come around to the idea of layers (bad experiences with eager young salon students trying to give everyone who walked in a "Rachel" cut back in the 90s), and I spent many years stoically trying to make blunt cuts work. I still love a blunt bob, but they're so fussy! And feel a bit too severe for my current style.

Irina -- I've grown out my bangs fully a few times, and I definitely don't mind it. It's nice being able to pull it all back and does open up the face similar to shorty-short bangs. Getting the layers right can be a little tricky, as I have a cowlick on one side of my forehead that behaves better if I weigh it down (hence a cut that moves a lot of hair forward!). I also find it harder to feel "edgy" without bangs. Mid-length hair with long or no bangs is definitely the go-to for moms in their 30s/40s in my 'hood, and I don't want to give in completely to the archetype. :)

You look great in all the photos - short or long hair!
They all give a slightly different vibe though - e.g. I see lots of love for #6, which gives a sharper Gamine look & shows off your lovely ears. But I actually like the slightly more tousled #3 & #4!
It hits more 'forest fairy' in the Gamine spectrum, which I suspect aligns with your personality (summer backpacking!)
To my eye, #2 & #5 seem a little 'heavy' because of the lack of forehead showing through the bangs (I prefer a slightly wispy fringe for you).
What do you think about this - is it a fair assessment?

I had my own hair cut from waist length to ear length in one go just before 2018 - it was strangely liberating but also restricting at the same time (less shampoo & drying needed, but more time spent wrestling it into submission when I got the inevitable cowlicks each morning - even moreso with curly/ wavy hair! I learnt I prefer *some* length to 'weigh down' the kinks.

Could this work for you? I.e. get your hair cut short like #6 a month before you go backpacking, then have it grow out to the #3-#4 stage whilst out there, so fewer cowlicks occur?

Great hair! I like the shorter versions of #2 and #6, but I can see that it grows out well, so you can go longer than is usual between cuts and still look good.

Yes! Last fall I got 2-3 inches chopped off the bottom into a micro-Bob and switched my part! It felt more modern than the conventional shoulder length style and worked particularly well with my hats! With warmer weather and humidity, I’ll have to get some layers to deal with the natural inclination to curl (and triangle head) but when fall rolls around, I think I’ll return to the micro-Bob.

Love your new short hair although your long hair cut looks great, too. During covid I let my hair grow out and stopped getting highlights. I was hopeful that this would work for me as well as it has for so many other forum members but it didn't. I felt really frumpy. So now I'm getting highlights and hair cuts every three months and feel more like myself. My hair has a tendency to flip up at the back so I've finally managed to convince my stylist to cut the back shorter which has helped. Sometimes it takes awhile to get things right.

I haven't had a haircut now in about five months and am trying to figure out what I want to do with it. My stylist moved and I wasn't super crazy about her anyway so I won't be traveling for my cuts.

Amazing hair evolution! How fun to enjoy ALL the lengths. All renditions look good! Personally, I love the #1 and #6. And you have beautiful eyes

You can wear your hair in any style as you have great bone structure. I like it in all the pictures but prefer picture 6 but I also liked it long. I had a disaster with really short hair years ago and would never be adventurous with hairstyles again.

Well it is more fun to ring the changes probably? I have had mine in essentially a pixie since I was 35 years old and now I am 63! So I do feel a bit bored after 28 years.
Having said that, when my hair was long a few times, especially in my early 30s when not layered, while I got compliments on the hair itself as it was very thick, I didn’t get many compliments about me in general, IYKWIM? It did weigh me down in photos from that era. I think it suits my overall “look” better short. Maintenance is always a pain, I should be 6 weeks between cuts but it’s often about 8 weeks by which time I’m feeling annoyed with it!
I do wonder if you have a more gamine look to you (to hark back to Kibbe types) and that therefore that’s why the shortest of these cuts, pic 6, sets your face off so well?

OMG, I LOVE the new short cut!! Gorgeous on you! Really highlights your eyes, as others have said.

Truly, you look great in all the photos here, but this one feels more intentional. I am a huge fan of the choppy fringe.

I made a small change to my hair -- some undercut on the sides and more length and asymmetry in the fringe -- but it's a bit of a pain to style it (my problems sound similar to yours) and I may go for the big chop in a month or two. I often do cut it into a more traditional full-on pixie for summer.

These cuts are proof that you can wear any style well, #6 is stunning. I love how this cut has forward movement and highlights your eyes and high cheek bones, it will be fun to see how it grows out.

With my hair, it seems to always revert to doing the same thing, unless I take a lot of time with styling. I am hesitant to cut my hair short because I have survived the horror of having an ash blonde Lego Helmet haircut - done by a stylist when I told him as a university student that I was going for a job interview at an accountancy firm and wanted my hair to look a bit more conventional (having previously had long strawberry blonde/pink locks).

I’m with Jamie, I love the short pixie in #6 but I’m a short hair fan. I also have a short pixie. But I have to get a fresh cut every three weeks, I have a lot of hair and it gets too voluminous if I don’t go regularly. Glad you don’t feel the need to go more frequently. How lovely, a summer of backpacking!

Gorgeous! I love #6 on you (although all of these are good). I hear you on the problem with upkeep and also the sharp neckline - mine grows out very quickly. But wow, does this haircut show off your eyes and fabulous bone structure.

I’ve not been buying a lot of clothes this year, and with the wardrobe pretty much on cruise control I haven’t felt like I have much to post about. But I thought I’d do a hair evolution update for fun! I just cleaned up my phone and don’t have many good photos of my hair at its longest — lots of toques and top-buns this winter! But #1 gives an idea. A year or so ago, I had some nice crown layers for volume and a shaggier/wavier texture, but I let them grow out over the summer/fall for ease of getting it all into a bun/ponytail. By late fall, I was very tired of the long layers and felt they were weighing me down visually. I finally made some time to do a big chop after holiday travel wound down. #2 is freshly cut in Jan, a sort of bixie style. 3/4/5 are Feb/Mar/April as it grew out.

I’m not into frequent maintenance trims (I think I touched up my bangs once in three months), and much prefer a cut that evolves naturally. I’m quite happy with the amount of waviness and movement I managed to coax out of my naturally quite straight hair. But I grew gradually a bit frustrated trying to deal with the poofiness of the bixie/microbob, and also the unruliness of my hair at an in-between length (I needed to spritz the ends with water every morning to not have one side wing out and the other curl in — I’m fine with a certain degree of asymmetry but this wasn’t the good kind of tousled bedhead, lol).

In early April I decided to go all-out, remove the troublesome bulk, and take the bangs and top muuuuch shorter (#6). I’ve left the side burns and neckline a bit longer/softer with an eye to grow-out. I’m quite inspired by all the pixie-mullet and shullet styles out there right now. For years, it felt like a sharply trimmed neckline was the only proper way to do short hair but that’s always fussy and severe on me. I’m pretty excited to leave this cut alone for a good bit and see how it grows out! I will probably do the bangs and crown layers one more time later this spring and then won’t have a chance to touch it again til fall (backpacking season — I'll be on the trail most of the summer).

Anyone else making big changes this year, hair or otherwise?
