I've had four haircuts in my life. My hair was all one long length until my late 20s - friends would trim it for me. I got it layered (but still long) twice in my late 20s. Then this past summer, at 34, I shaved one side! I love it and plan to keep it this way for a long time. I do wonder if taking that plunge will make me more willing to play around with it, perhaps even going short some day.

My long red hair felt like such a part of my identity that I was scared to change it.

Low maintenance is definitely a factor, Nancy. I don't have to fight my hair nearly as much as I used to when I was younger in order to get it straight(ish), but sometimes it really does feel like I'm putting some strain on my hair with all the blow-drying, since for now, I'm committed to coloring it. When I let my hair go wavy, I can pretty much get away with blow-drying the bangs and a little bit at the crown, and let the rest dry naturally, saving some wear and tear on the fragile ends. My hair is definitely not as thick as it used to be, so I'm feeling a little more need to baby it.

I have very little flexibility with my wiry, frizzy hair. Short may look nice to you all, but to me I feel like it's the necessary default. I'd love to have more options.

Janet, in one of your recent WIWs I noticed your hair was wavy. I really liked it. I attributed it to the low-maintenance routine of East Texas. Glad to see you're playing around with it for the moment.

I'm another who gets bored. I also need messy before I really like a cut but my hair is straight, straight, straight so I need to keep it short to get the look I want. It's ironic because I have perfect hair for a bob but it just isn't me :)

I make changes to my hair style reasonably often. I have to get it cut every two months, and every couple of times I get it cut I try to get something different. Sometimes it's small things, like how asymmetric it is or how high up it goes in the back, and sometimes it's huge like shaving half of my head! The nice (and terrible) thing about having really short hair is that it grows out really fast, so any changes are super low risk, even the dramatic ones.

I feel better with making changes fairly often. I get bored so easily - and I just like trying new things - whether it's my hairstyle, the color of paint on my walls, husbands (LOL - just kidding!). Anyway . . . I can't wait to see your hair when you let it go a little crazy. I remember that I was one of the ones who liked your hair straight when you were considering letting it go wavy the last time - it seemed more rock 'n roll to me - but, I can easily see you pulling off the waves too!

I am easily bored but my hair works so well for me that I have to resort to little tweaks to stay engaged - color, change in angle, shorter in back... It is a constant back and forth in my head: signature style vs need for change....

when i was younger, i would change it up quite frequently. i was willing to try anything once. once i hit my forties, i have been making less dramatic changes, but still tweak it every year or so. the last tweak was a change in color, from dark blonde to subtle red to dark red in 4 months, but leaving it longish.
i feel like hair is an easy thing to change, and its cheaper than a whole new wardrobe, but can have just as big an impact.
that being said, i do think you need to have a hairdresser that you feel really comfortable with....otherwise these changes maybe more of a risk.

I am coming in from the other side to arrive at the same place. I keep going shorter. Which I realize is relative with how long my hair is. I'm wanting to go almost as short as this Jennifer Lawrence 'do next time. Maybe 2 inches past the collarbone.
My 'tweaks' are also minor. Change of bangs, no bangs. 3 inches shorter, 3 inches longer. Some highlights, no highlights for a while. But I notice them, and like the small changes.

I went from an every 5 week upkeep pixie cut with longish fringed bangs to a long messy bob recently, which I am loving. Janet, I was one of those that loved your natural waves a while back and prefered it to your straightened hair style, so I think you should go with the change up and think it will look great.

I'm a big fan of making little tweaks, often. I especially did that when I had shorter hair to prevent boredom. I don't know if the changes are visible to anyone but me, but it makes me happy!

This often happens when I'm getting towards the point where I'm in desperate need of a hair cut and color -- lately I've been letting my hair go a bit more RATE. Leaving it wavy and a little wild.

I think I'm going to go with that more for a while and see how it feels. I'm kind of enjoying having it a little longer and a little wilder. Seeing today's featured blogger, Sheree, made me realize that this look can work for my more rock'n'roll style side, especially with the ombre effect my stylist put in the last time I went.

I'm not shy about changing my hair up on a continual basis. I rarely do anything drastic, but I do get bored if I leave it exactly the same for too long. How do you all feel about hair style evolution? Do you feel better if you keep some changes coming or if you stick with your tried-and-true?
